- I ordered this nifty gasket-mounted 75% layout mechanical keyboard from Glorious recently - some assembly required. So let's put it together and try out this build!

Heh, folks suggesting I configure the knob to play Arkanoid or Tempest... That's an excellent idea.
Though I'm also quite amused by making it activate pgup/down. Aw yeah *KNOB POTENTIAL.*
Also, I got mixed up on pricing. I paid $100 upfront to reserve the board and then another $70 once it was ready to ship. Apologies for the mixup, I'd forgotten about that first payment!
Super Breakout and Pong clones would benefit as well, in addition to analog sound controls in some scenarios.

Another idea, is using the knob as the arrow keys. Knob=line up/down, shift+knob=left/right.
It's called "potentiometer" for a reason.. ;)
The lube on the GMMK Pro apparently sucks. The same can be said about the stabilizers themselves. Try using a different kind of lube (clean existing lube off with alcohol&q-tip). If that doesn't work, try installing different stabilizers.

There are black foam pads underneath the stabilizers and they absorb the massive amount of lube that was put there from the factory. That causes them to stick. If you remove those black foam pads, it should prevent any sticking.

I choosed to build my own keyboard, choosing switches, lubing them, soldering, etc. And I love it. It's way to expensive for what it is, but you can't go back to a regular one after that.

Back in my day we'd build our boards from scratch! You'd need to press your own PCB, mill your own case, and pressure cast your own keycaps! Why, we didn't even have the luxery of 3D printing, AND we had to walk to school uphill with no shoes in the rain!
It's so weird to see this being published since I just received my own GMMK Pro today. Pretty fantastic keyboard despite what some reviewers might say, really love mine.
This is the best looking keyboard I’ve ever seen. Brought a tear to my eye.
Everyone thinks I'm crazy because I have a normal GMMK with all Box Navy Thick Clicks.... I'm glad to see someone else uses them in some capacity! 😂

Oooh! I use both kailh boy navy's and jades and they are the best switches i have ever tried! I love them so much!

Nice choice Clint! As a custom keyboard nerd, the GMMK Pro is a really damn good place to be for the price. It's mostly been designed for enthusiasts like myself who buy into group buys for keyboards that many cost hundreds of dollars, which is why it feels so super-premium in its build. I've got a modded GMMK Pro with an aftermarket FR4 (PCB material) screwless plate, self-lubed c3equalz screw-in stabilizers, and self-lubed Gazzew Boba U4T(actile) switches, among many other keyboards lol. Feelsgoodman, love seeing my hobbies unexpectedly!
EDIT: I also make coiled USB-C cables for my (and occasionally to be sold) keyboards. If you'd like, I'd be happy to make and send you one built to your spec free of charge.
Where do you sell your coiled USB-C cables? I have a bluetooth+hasu controller board with a usb-c mod coming for a white fc660c and want something that matches the overall appearance. I have a somewhat matching grey aviator cable but while it looks cool, it's way bulkier and stiffer than I need

ive been using a 75% layout for years and years, its the best layout. its only a row taller and a column wider than a 60%, so you have the same functionality as a 10keyless (f row, arrows, home, end, page up and down), but its more compact. and you can always add a number pad, like the ducky pocket, and it can go on the left or something.
I have a TKL and a 60%. My next one will be a 75%, I think. I’m going to keep an eye out for this GMMK Pro.

I like my SteelSeries Apex 7 keyboard. It also has RGB, but I have it configured to be just plain white like any other backlit keyboard. One nice touch is that you can configure the toggle keys to show with a different color when they're toggled on, so there are no separate "Caps Lock", "Num Lock", and "Scroll Lock" LEDs. The characters on the keycaps are translucent, so the backlight shines through them, which I like.

I'd go crazy without a numpad! I recently got an Australian made keyboard a 'Venom MK101' with cherry mx blues. Also has a solid metal body.
Damn, I remember when mechanical keyboards were *THE NORM* in the 80's/90's, then cheapo membrane keyboards arrived and now there are kids who are not aware it's retro tech that just worked and *never* should've went away.
the only thing membranes have over mechanicals is price and usually theyre quieter
@@linkthehero1234 - When mechanical keyboards were the norm, their prices were low, as is reflected in every market with large coverage. Now they're treat like they are some mythical creature from an unknown tech world and manufacturers exploit it. As for quietness, you can buy a keyboard with a full metal chassis keyboard like the one in this video (as plastic body keyboards amplify the noise), buy different switches or apply a number of methods to dampen the sound (o-rings, silicon strips or foam). Wear the keyboard in and the sound lowers naturally.
Thumbs up for the Dolch theme keycaps, I love my Signature Plastics double-shot DSA Dolch set with matching red PANIC escape button. I wish there was a bezel-less version of this keyboard, I really prefer those for the ease of keeping them clean.
He's definitely going to buy one of those System76 keyboards next $280ish 950grams

Regarding your complaints with the stabilisers and their lubrication, other reviewers said the same. Apparently Glorious' own brand of lube isn't great, and their stabs aren't the best. Seemed to be the one key issue reviewers said (specifically BadSeed Tech). Maybe you'd like to try replacing the stabs entirely?

@@BA-oy9uo My interpretation was Clint disliked how they the stabs stuck and that the lube was too viscous/gooey. This is in line with what I'd heard in, specifically, BadSeed Tech's video on the GMMK.
The branding is shite too, my only other complaint.
I love my GMMK keyboard. After messing with Corsair and the like, it's a refreshing change.

Silly Clint, don't you realize we all subscribe to you because we love your rambling? There are not many people out there that share the same amount of love and nostalgia for retro tech and retro PC tech as I'm sure people in the LGR community do, we love listening to you ramble and reminisce. :-)
so weird, I was just looking at keyboards like this (not quite, HHKB, but still) a few hours ago which was like the first time in months. still don't know if I should do it since I have a leopold FC660C already but I almost never use the arrow keys and an even smaller keyboard would be cool.

Got a YMDK Melody96 in the heavy aluminum slab like Craft Computing has. I love it so much!
I wanted one of those so bad when they came out, but I couldn't justify the price. I liked that it was a mass produced gasket keyboard, which was a good thing as it paved the way for that to finally come down to the more mainstream market. Now there are a handful of more affordable gasket mount boards out there.
Pinks Jades and Navies are some of the nicest keyfeel switches available new these days.
The click and tactility can't be beat in the Cherry compatible space.

I recently got the same and love it apart form the same issue with the space bar.
The HyperX keyboards I have are metal and have a nice weight to them as well as a nice sound especially when you swap out the key caps. The Alloy Elite has a steel top plate and the Alloy Origins Core has an all aluminium body. I don't think I can go back to keyboards that are mostly lightweight plastic.
Hey, I was looking into one of these. I have a Model O mouse and I love it.
Yeah I was gonna suggest you use those 4 Extra Keys for PG-UP and PG-DWN along with DELETE and Print Screen. Although the idea to put Page Up and Down on the wheel knob is even better, gives you two more keys for maybe Home / End, which is nice for long text documents or such.

I got one of the first batch of the gmmk and had similar issues with the stabilizers. I would suggest getting some aftermarket stabilizers. I swapped mine with the durock v2 and it feels better.

I heard the intro as 'blerbsgreeeens' and I like it.
I have the regular GMMK that shipped with Gateron Brown and double shot ABS keycaps. It feels nice to type and game on but I prefer the progressive spring rates of switches like HyperX Aqua switches and will probably buy myself some Glorious Panda switches. I just bought myself some Corsair PRO keycaps which are double shot PBT with a standard bottom layout.
Knob? Volume knob! Can't have enough of these.

I like the look of the keyboard and the switches you used. I would have preferred the bottom to be black, as it would match more with the keys. Another great video!

To date, I'm partial to Cherry Red, and as of late, the speed silvers on my Corsair K70. Some white and gold key caps would really make that thematically fit my present build.
Linears are a totally different beast.
Luckily they were always Cherry's bread and butter.

But if you wanna know about limitations... build an ALPS/Matias board for the leaf spring tactiles and watch your keycap and chassis options evaporate lol

I would map the knob to CTRL+PGUP/PGDN so that when I have multiple pages side by side in Word, I can scroll between them from left to right.
The knob should be hooked up to some record scratching sound, so you do that while something loads.
I built in this too, I am addicted to type racer now lol
Oh, yeah! I forgot about how the small form factor looses the Home and Delete keys! I'm going to have to do the same thing you did on my new custom keyboard. Yeah, I use those keys a LOT! :P

I want to buy a new keyboard so badly but i love my CM Storm Quickfire Rapid too much. It's been good to me for 8 years and i love the way it feels with it's Cherry MX Black switches. Can someone recommend a replacement that would be on-par or better?

I prefer the drop custom keyboards cause no bezzles making it so much easier to clean. Though I do highly recommend the glorious mouses, never going back to normal mice after experiencing that weightlessness.
How much did it would cost to build up one from scratch (including everything you already had at hand)?
I have a Keychron k2 my Bluetooth quit working after only a few months. Wired still works fine, but annoying non the less

From what I understand the sluggish keys are from overlubbing the stabilizers. GMMK is notorious on the mechanical keyboard subreddit for this reason.

I used my steel series keyboard for 5 years now and I love it I want a mechanic one but they are so damn expensive heck they often cost more tham what I paid for my ps4 pro which was 130 bucks a good mechanic keyboard goes for around 170-200 bucks.

Same, I use too many AutoHotKey macros with mine to switch to a TKL or 60%. I suppose one could just get a separate Numpad, but that just seems like too much work.
I won't be using the heavy ones for the space bar, I like a light space bar... I'll use the heavy keys on all the modifiers, including the space bar, I love a heavy space bar 🤣

Watching this makes me wonder if Clint ever experienced the old Sun Type 5 keyboards. Built like tanks (seriously, steel innards), and really nice key feel...
If you want to try another board that still has a rotary knob but doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, check out the ‘TM680’. It’s a fantastic board!
A lot of your gripes with the board are fixed by modding. Changing out the plate material, changing the stabilizers and lubing them. I know that it's not something you want to do, but the board is meant as an entry point to the custom keyboard world.
Not sure if you're already aware, or have tried them, but MT3 profile keycaps (or SA) would be right up your alley. The high profile and scoop is fantastic for typing (not so much gaming).
I'm pretty sure that the particle board keyboard tray on my cheap Office Depot computer desk would bow if I put that keyboard on it. It would be so worth it though. That thing looks sweet. I think the only thing I would do different is I would use black keycaps for the WASD keys.
