Just got into fishing on the Vedder River recently Rod. Really appreciate your videos! Been watching many of them! Hopefully, one day, I can see you down on the river and say thanks in person! :)
Rod, I've watched most of your videos and find them most helpful. I'm getting a little too old to wade aggressively for steelhead fly fishing. Over the past two years I have been transitioning into float fishing. You speak very clearly and explain what you are doing well. As an old retired school teacher I appreciate that. Keep doing what you are doing.
Love the video rod, I tried my best today to use this technique on the vedder. We caught and released one non hatchery coho and a nice rainbow trout while losing the others we had on the line. Could I ask what rod and reel you are using in this video? I would love to get a level wind set up for the river.
+Derek Pole The reel is a Shimano Chronarch low profile baitcasting/levelwind reel. These reels have a smaller spool capacity which I think is more than enough for targeting fish in the Vedder, even for chinook salmon. This way I don't end up with excessive amount of line on the bottom half of the spool which never gets used. The rod used in this video is a custom built rod, 10'6" rated 8 to 12lb, but you can find rods in similar specs quite easily. Shimano Convergence has a couple of models which are around the $100 mark or less, or Gloomis IMX if you are looking for a higher end model.
+Harvey Labro You can use the first and third technique with a spinning reel, but it'll be difficult to feed the line out smoothly with a spinning reel for that second technique.
+Fishing with Rod you can open the bail and keep your thumb on the spool just like the baitcasting reel- and then set the hook with your thumb on the spool and close the bail afterwards.
I fish streams, ponds, and lakes. When using lures which aren't designed to go down to a specific depth (such as spoons, spinnerbaits, etc), I always use a float so I can set them to consistently run at the depth I want them to. I've been doing that for a long time now.
Thibeinn i just rigged a setup for my local pond with a baby simon at the end of a floro leader below a swivel with a small slip bobber with stops top and bottom. I think it should do well except the trout at this pond tend to be lazy. i have hooked up allot with a standard slip rig with small jigs but i want to expand my methods a bit. Im going to have to play with split weight a bit to see what makes the spoon run correctly.
Hi Rod. It's the fishing beginner here again. About Pink Salmon, when can they be retained? I noticed that people keep on releasing them whenever they caught them on Vedder River.
down here in north texas i use spoons primarily for sand bass....they seem to really like them. but i have snagged all kinds of fish on them. very versatile lure!
Hi rod, thank again for great video. I have used all the brand that you prefer in your video such as shimano reel and rod, maxima line, etc. I would like to ask why are u prefer maxima ultra line than others brand name like P-line or berkley and simm wader instead of others?
Thanks so much for the video! I just started fishing and yesterday I tried fishing with weights and a spoon but kept getting snagged over and over. Going to try with a floater like you showed on your video!
Not really, Gibbs Koho spoons are pretty heavy casting spoons and not meant to be fished under a float. It is also mainly a salmon lure, too big for trout. You're better off using a Gibbs Croc spoon in the 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4oz size for trout.
what about just keeping it in one place, down stream, the spoon fluttering under the float due to the current, the line pulled taught? Just sit and wait type fishing but with spoon.
Beautiful Video, learn so much and tank you. Have one question? for the first three second of your video " It showing some people learning the Fly fishing" , can you please let me know the name of the place. Many thanks in advance.
Have one question? for the first three second of your video " It showing some people learning the Fly fishing" , can you please let me know the name of the place. Many thanks in advance
The instructor in the first few seconds of the introduction is April Vokey. You'll be able to find lots of information on her by Googling. ;) She does not do fly casting lessons very often now, if any. That particular event took place in Chilliwack.
Hey Rod what do you think about that reel you got in this video, I am really thinking of buying it but was wondering what you thought of it. Good things and bad, thanks Rod and awesome videos.
+Steven Vail The Shimano Chronarch? I love it! I generally prefer low profile baitcasting reels for this type of fishing than a larger round baitcaster. This particular one is the higher end model by Shimano so it's very smooth as expected, and with proper maintenance after each season, they can last forever. This one I've had for four seasons now and still working great. The only thing I probably don't like is the colour lol... Dark metallic, silver are my preferred colours.
whats a good brand of clear floats? the ones I bought were pretty shitty and leaked after a few casts. still nothing like retrieving and maneuvering spoons/spinners/worms with light tackle though. slide it right under log jams in front of coho's face for best results.
Rod I've been trying drift fishing spoons without the float and have felt the nasty snags, or my pencil led getting sticky, about what size float do you run usually? Thanks for another awesome video, and fish on!!!
Hi Rod, I've been float fishing from the river bank for a while now. The biggest drawback is getting snagged from the river bottom on boulders, weeds, etc. What techniques would you recommend to get the hook unsnagged? Or could you perhaps make a video on unsnagging. Thanks!
+Will Man There really isn't one perfect way to free your rig from a snag. The hook can be embedded in a branch, which would be almost impossible to detach. The weight could be wedged between pebbles, then it'd be easy to free. The best way is to avoid getting snagged up in the first place by not fishing too deep.
Hi, Rod! Thanks for the tips! Great Video! watched this one and the one you were using Islander IS reel... i am not very sure which one to buy now... Much appreciated!
Hey man I'm a new fisherman, and I wanted to go fishing in the vedder river and I was wondering if your catching and fish? And what the rate it's? Thanks
+Wasp Kye The Chilliwack/Vedder River produces fish almost year round and you can fish it throughout the year except June. There is an overview on our website about it actually, you should check it out. The next two months should be good for salmon.
Hi Rod, for this technique, how crucial is it to have a long rod (10ft +)with a level wind reel? I want to give this a go with my 7 ft spin cast. Quite the difference, but wondering you've tried it before! thanks!
+Matthias Kempe The longer 10ft+ rod definitely gives you an advantage as you can keep more line from the rod tip to the float off the water. This creates less drag and allows you to have better hook-sets. Having the level wind reel is also important as you need the free spooling function to feed the line out smoothly as the float drifts down. You certainly can open the bail of your spinning reel and keep feeding line that way but you're going to have too much loose line and find yourself missing most of the bites.
coincidently, I went out fishing today on the Vedder for the first time. did spinning with lures and I can attest that it definitely works and you get bites, but beware of Snag City. I lost 5 lures so it may not be the most effective way to fish so this method will be what i'm trying next. was this out at the Vedder too, Rod?
+AkinToMeatloaf I use Frogg Toggs waders. Check them out, pretty awesome. They are cheaper than other breathable waders, a little thicker so a bit more durable, and they are also a bit wider so more space for the legs to move, more comfortable.
+Fishing with Rod Yeah, I use their Hellbender Wading Jacket, the same brown one I've seen you use in your videos. It was really inexpensive and had everything I wanted in a wading jacket. I'll have to check out their waders too!
Hi Rod! Thanks for another awesome video!! Are you measuring the float depth from the float to the weight or from the float to the spoon? I always have a hard time with this hahaha Any help you can offer would be awesome. Thank you very much and keep up the good work!
+JeremyPiz From float to the hook. Keep in mind that the hook/lure/bait will float up a bit, depending on how strong the current is and how much you hold back the line when it is drifting downstream, so that float depth has to be adjusted a few times to get it right if you are fishing a new spot.
+Fishing with Rod Thank you very much for the reply Rod! I'll keep all this in mind. I always have a hard time with float depth, so hopefully next time I'm on the water, I'll get it right sooner. Hope you're having a good pink year. And I can't wait for the next video!!!
At the point your fishing the salmon are not laying eggs. Salmon will lay their eggs in very shallow water.. The salmon are not feeding. They strike out from instinct.
Thanks Rod. I use Dick Nite spoons with this technique next to log jams and other obstructions. Coho cannot resist the urge to stike a fluttering spoon. Cheers,

Thank you for those kind words Ed! I really appreciate it. Many more videos to come and I hope you'll keep enjoying them.

I wonder if this would work for river pike....
Wow i just started doing this exact method for catching chinook in very shallow rivers great to see its a real technique
Carlos R Great!

DAMM GOOD IDEA:
this technique with soft plastic craws on jigheads under a float works really well also.
Awesome technique, I am definitely gonna try this in Montana.
+Steven Vail Great! Good luck. :)
THanks Rod, your awesome.
If you are using monofilament main line should you use a fluorocarbon leader or just use the same monofilament for the leader?
In the past couple of years I have been using fluorocarbon (Seaguar STS to be specific) for leaders. It seems to work much better.
Hi Rod. It's the fishing beginner here again. About Pink Salmon, when can they be retained? I noticed that people keep on releasing them whenever they caught them on Vedder River.
The pink salmon season is over this year. There wasn't an opening for retention in most fisheries due to low returns.
down here in north texas i use spoons primarily for sand bass....they seem to really like them. but i have snagged all kinds of fish on them. very versatile lure!

Hey rod where do you get your floats for lakes and where do you get them for rivers. TIGHT LINES!!!
+Joe Carpenter I get my floats from the local fishing tackle stores.
Very well made video and exactly what i was lookingfor! thank you!
You're welcome!
Hey it's me again and I was wondering if I should go fishing now or wait a bit
+Wasp Kye You should always go fishing.
you should wait a little longer
Hi can you please make a video on the vedder this year catching/coho chum and Chinook. Thx
+Sean Booth Stay tuned! There might be one...
Thx
nice video and good idea I will try that one dude
Rod, I'm new to float fishing and I'm going to use this for steelhead this year. Great video man!
Hi Rod - Would a Gibbs Koho spoon work using this method and if so what size for trout would be best?

Nice! I was looking for this video , have you fish with this set up at lakes from the bank ?
what about just keeping it in one place, down stream, the spoon fluttering under the float due to the current, the line pulled taught? Just sit and wait type fishing but with spoon.
Well, if you could keep the float sitting at one place then back trolling would work too.
@@FishingwithRod what is back trolling?

Can you make a video about how to cast with a centrepin reel..techniques etc...?
whats a good brand of clear floats? the ones I bought were pretty shitty and leaked after a few casts. still nothing like retrieving and maneuvering spoons/spinners/worms with light tackle though. slide it right under log jams in front of coho's face for best results.
+LuBearr Personally I prefer Drennan Pikers.
Rod I've been trying drift fishing spoons without the float and have felt the nasty snags, or my pencil led getting sticky, about what size float do you run usually? Thanks for another awesome video, and fish on!!!
+Blake Wintch I usually run 20 or 25g floats when doing this, should have mentioned that in the video. Thanks for watching!

Awsome, thank for the video!
+quoc anh Nguyen You're welcome!
what if you use casting spoon instead of using trolling+weight?
+Milad Khosravi Nothing wrong with that.
Thanks man. you are awesome.

Can you apply this same technique but with a centre pin reel/float rod?
Ray Hamel yes, you can use this technique on any reel
