Well, they don't look bad, I agree with that. However, most maps have bright scenarios in which, for example, a Bubbling unusual would be close to impossible to see. However, as I said it doesn't look bad so it's still a decent option.

If you have a Fed Fightin' Fedora with Dead Presidents; that's freaking awesome in my opinion, because it matches the theme of the Dillinger's Duffle, and the Scout Criminal set in general.

I think the main problem with effects such as Bubbling, Overclocked/Memory Leak, Eerie OF etc. is that they don't glow. If Bubbles were silvery glowing, OC and ML glowy in their respective colours and Eerie OF had some purple undertone, they would be much higher, especially Eerie OF, I think it would be even above the regular OF.
I really dislike that bigger traders almost always dismiss the cheaper effects and say that they're bad, usually JUST because they're cheap. I for example really don't like the Burning Flames or Sunbeams, not because I can't afford these, but for how plain and boring they are. Seriously, just take a flame particle, smack it on a hat and it's worth 5000$ more. The look of the effect is also affected strongly by the hats and/or other effect combinations, or themes. For example, my friend wants to make a stinky, fat scientist papa engi and his unusual hat of choice is a Massed Flies Brainiac's Hairpiece, which matches great with the theme. The Nuts&Bolts is also literally always themed when put up on engineer or a robo hat. The first time I saw it on an MvM server I was amazed how great it looked on our engi and when I told him, he looked pretty happy. Subatomic or Atomic look awesome on space theme hats like The Head Full of Hot Air or Bubble Pipe and Aces High should be considered god tier on the Hat of Cards. And you know why I like them? Because they have personality. Just tell me, what do effects of Purple or Green Energy say about a person wearing it, except for being either good at trading, lucky unboxer or the reason his mom's credit card is suddenly empty. Yeah sure, they look flashy as heck, so what? Your head is visible to enemy snipers 10x as much and you can forget about ever playing sneaky. I have to say though, not all of the high tier effects look like garbage to me though (obviously). Circling Hearts is always adorable on pyros or hoovies, I love it with the Tough Guy's Toque. Nebula is just amazing, nothing more to say about it. Morning Glory and Death at Dusk are well made, well thought out and at the same time you don't look like a flexing butthole when you combo them, unlike Scortching and all these others. TL;Dr : Expensive effects =/= good. Good expensive effects = good Cheap effects =/= bad. Bad cheap effects = bad. Why do I have to say this.
TF2 fashion sense is objective. Personally, most, if not all cheap effects are not appealing or interesting to look at. I guess it's because I'm more of a high tier trader, but they only ever work if you're trying to make a set.
Could you maybe do a list of "How to make bad unusuals look good" like maybe having Nuts n Bolts as an effect, but having cosmetics that suit the unusual so it doesn't look as bad?

I like the flies affect. Idk, when a game involves flies i usually pick those things for some reason. Like binding of isaac is an example, i really really like the fly items and i kinda feel bad killing the harmless ones (You need to) and honestly i would want to have the massed flies effect
For the "you can't see it that good from a far" - I think you should prefer for your enemy to see its glory on the killshot instead of giving your enemy your location lol
***** Electrostatic is a very minimalistic effect and it supposed to not be very noticable. I have electrostatic on my sniper, and it looks good when people are near me. I don't want enemies seeing me from a far distance as a sniper.
I feel like all unusuals have their own type of quality and every unusual has a set it can work into. For example you could make a homeless set with massed flies
I love Nuts + Bolts. From what I remember it came out with the Mann vs Machine update, which is my favorite update. It's also really cheap for an Unusual. You can get a Nuts + Bolts Backwards Ballcap for like $30 on the Community Market.

I like Nuts and Bolts a lot cause it fits 2 of my sets that I made for Scout and Heavy while also being cheap and decent looking.It doesn't fit almost any set but in the ones it fits it looks very nice imo.
personally, my mentality on unusuals is A. is it easily noticeable, that way other players see it B. does the effect look good if the effect lands in both those categories, it's a top tier unusual effect, for example circling peace sign isn't a very expensive effect to get, but it looks nice, and is flashy enough for other people to notice, i have a circling peace sign human cannonball, and it is my most used cosmetic, because it fits flashy and looks good
As much as I agree with massed flies being at number 1, I could see it working well with the trash man or any other similar cosmetics. Either way, I think that this was a pretty fair list!
(NOT A RANT) The #1 position is on my dream unusual which is a Massed Flies Swagman's Swatter, because the corks on the real life hat the Swagman's Swatter is based off of are actually designed to keep away flies, so it's rather realistic and cool to me.
Know what's funny about all these Unusual effects? They're all the ones that don't make hardcore players single you out and specifically go after you. Whereas if you're wearing a flashy Unusual, everyone focus fires you because "He has an Unusual, he must be good!" I love wearing my Unusual Massed Flies "Hat with no Name" because people don't realize it's an unusual until they die, then they always leave a comment along the likes of "That unusual is horrible." To which I just smirk; because I couldn't care less. It acts as less of a trigger, and makes it HARDER for them to single you out among the crowd, which makes you less likely to get singled out by petty tryhards. Whereas if you're wearing something obvious like Burning or Neutron Star; people are going to know which one is you all the time.
It's interesting, I actually like most of the unusuals on this list, mainly because of my taste in unusuals, being someone who likes more subtle effect. (specifically ancient codex, which is actually one of my favorite effects) But whatever, you do you.
My first unusual wasn't the best effect since it was cheaper and I really wanted one, ended up getting a soldiers slope scopers with orbiting planet effect
I feel like SOME of these effects could work quite well thematically in certain loadouts. For example, I _could_ see Nuts & Bolts working well with an Engineer loadout with a lot of robotic parts. -i dont have $20+ to spend on unusual hats to try this out for myself, so please correct me if i'm wrong-

For the "you can't see it that good from a far" - I think you should prefer for your enemy to see its glory on the killshot instead of giving your enemy your location lol
how are electrostatic and power surge worse than bubbling?
***** Electrostatic is a very minimalistic effect and it supposed to not be very noticable. I have electrostatic on my sniper, and it looks good when people are near me. I don't want enemies seeing me from a far distance as a sniper.
***** Knifestorm also look pretty neat on sniper, and it's not very noticable from a long distance. I used to have one.

I feel like all unusuals have their own type of quality and every unusual has a set it can work into. For example you could make a homeless set with massed flies

Steaming is pretty neat but I do have to agree on the fact that most of these effects are good.
I love Nuts + Bolts. From what I remember it came out with the Mann vs Machine update, which is my favorite update. It's also really cheap for an Unusual. You can get a Nuts + Bolts Backwards Ballcap for like $30 on the Community Market.

I like Nuts and Bolts a lot cause it fits 2 of my sets that I made for Scout and Heavy while also being cheap and decent looking.It doesn't fit almost any set but in the ones it fits it looks very nice imo.
personally, my mentality on unusuals is
A. is it easily noticeable, that way other players see it
B. does the effect look good
if the effect lands in both those categories, it's a top tier unusual effect, for example
circling peace sign isn't a very expensive effect to get, but it looks nice, and is flashy enough for other people to notice, i have a circling peace sign human cannonball, and it is my most used cosmetic, because it fits flashy and looks good
I think that number 1 and 2 should be swapped since the flies effect can look probably kinda nice with the soldier's beggar set.
As much as I agree with massed flies being at number 1, I could see it working well with the trash man or any other similar cosmetics. Either way, I think that this was a pretty fair list!

The #1 position is on my dream unusual which is a Massed Flies Swagman's Swatter, because the corks on the real life hat the Swagman's Swatter is based off of are actually designed to keep away flies, so it's rather realistic and cool to me.

Know what's funny about all these Unusual effects?
They're all the ones that don't make hardcore players single you out and specifically go after you. Whereas if you're wearing a flashy Unusual, everyone focus fires you because "He has an Unusual, he must be good!"
I love wearing my Unusual Massed Flies "Hat with no Name" because people don't realize it's an unusual until they die, then they always leave a comment along the likes of "That unusual is horrible." To which I just smirk; because I couldn't care less. It acts as less of a trigger, and makes it HARDER for them to single you out among the crowd, which makes you less likely to get singled out by petty tryhards.
Whereas if you're wearing something obvious like Burning or Neutron Star; people are going to know which one is you all the time.

It's interesting, I actually like most of the unusuals on this list, mainly because of my taste in unusuals, being someone who likes more subtle effect. (specifically ancient codex, which is actually one of my favorite effects) But whatever, you do you.
Some of these effects are great with specific hats, like aces high with the hat of cards or nuts and bolts on some robo hats.

My first unusual wasn't the best effect since it was cheaper and I really wanted one, ended up getting a soldiers slope scopers with orbiting planet effect
I think Nuts N Bolts can looks very good with some hats, especially if you prefer a more minimalist effect.
I feel like SOME of these effects could work quite well thematically in certain loadouts. For example, I _could_ see Nuts & Bolts working well with an Engineer loadout with a lot of robotic parts.
