"The Unit" | Team Shooting Drill

  • This is a scenario based shooting drill made for entertaining purposes only. It shows a fire team of five moving trough hostile territory. They spot the enemy forces, go into position and perform a coordinated attack. They use high ground and element of surprise to their advantage, overwhelming the enemy with suppressive fire and quick maneuvering.There were definitely some mistakes made but this was never meant to be a "how to" on tactics but more as a cinematic representation of team shooting drill.
    Firearms used: H&K G3, CZ 858 (Vz58), M70 ab2, CZ 75, Sig Sauer P226, H&K USP
    Producers: Ziga Polajnar - Samo R. Stergel - Jan Kok
    Camera & Editing: Jan Kok

    Hello, guys!
    We'd like to say again, we KNOW there were a few mistakes in the video. We really try to do everything as best as possible. We are, most of the time, faced with limited time, resources and access to the range. We have to capture everything on one or two cameras with one or two cameramen. So mistakes happen.
    Thank you for the positive comments and and the constructive criticism, we will try to always do better!

      That was outstanding, some of the best Ive seen on youtube, I just have one question: why is there a ziptie on the front grip of that AK at 2:50, guy has a PWS comp so he obviously knows what he is doing but the ziptie just kills it. That and that polished bolt carrier needs to be cold blued or something, bling bling on a combat rifle is a big nono.

    Ok, a few pointers guys.
    Don't take this the wrong way, many of the concepts and basic ideas are good, but you need to focus on the basics, ignore what is being done in movies and what seems to be cool. KISS - keep it simpe, stupid.
    1) When moving in a single file, your distancing is good, the focus and speed of movement is also spot on, however you need to agree at the beginning of the patrol who covers what angle, i.e. point man covers the front, then the left side then right side etc. the man in the rear only occasionally looks behind him, when the patrol stops however, then the last man HAS to cover the rear at all times -> in the video whoever is the last man just stops and looks to the right or left, this is problematic, since on angle of attack is open.
    2) The way it looks on the video is that you stop in a clearing of sorts before the forest starts, this makes little sense, if you do that, then the team must immediately move into the treeline or to the very edge, so you are not exposed and in an open area. Plus you avoid being silhouetted.
    3) Hand signals: idea is good, "passing on" i.e. repeating the signal is a good idea, just one tip, why not collect the team in an all-round defense and then issue orders where everyone can see or hear (whispering) you, quasi a "hedgehog" formation.
    --> Very important: one handed signals are always done with the weak hand, i.e. the hand on the pistol grip never leaves it. This serves two purposes: one, you get in the habit of being ready to shoot at all times, two you can be aiming in a certain direction and signalling at the same time. Comes in handy in dynamic situations e.g. cqb when signalling "ready" or throwing a flash bang as the first man at the door.
    4) The designated marksman/woman or "sniper": concept of her being the cork in the bottle of your L-shaped ambush is good, however her movement and doctrine need some improvement,
    firstly, it seems strange that she does not have a second supporting soldier and your patrol only has five people, nonetheless, in NATO and western armies, the smallest unit is a "binom" of two soldiers, at a bare minimum. If the enemy were to use an immediate action drill during your ambush and would attempt to break out of the ambush by laying down suppressive fire and assaulting your sniper, she would very quickly be in big trouble. Maybe a light machine gun or grenadier could back her up and help her spot targets.
    A short comment on her position. The idea of resting the rifle (a G3?) on a branch is excellent and provides stablility and the fact that she is not prone makes for a quck getaway, but wouldn't it be better for her to go prone and use the bipod, I mean it's not like you need to evacuate the scene so quickly after the ambush that the second it would take her to stand up would be a problem.
    5) When you spring the trap and start firing, everything looks good, but your movement is a problem,from a military perspective. First of all, you act as individuals, not as elements of a team. Make groups of two, then groups of four etc. as your unit gets bigger. The basic principle and most important rule for Infantrymen is fire and maneuver. You never move unless someone else is covering you or laying down suppressive fire. One group provides cover, the other moves. There is a moment in this video where the whole team is advancing , but no one is covering you (the DM is too far away to do this).
    Lastly, at one point near the end, one of your guys stops at the edge of the forest and goes prone to engage the targets, this is okay, but he is lacking cover, one must always identify the next cover to move to when moving so as not to end uo in the open.
    and one more thing: you are communicating, which is excellent, but when yelling that you are moving (i am assuming that's what you are saying during the ambush) after yelling, you must wait for your teammates to confirm that they heard you and that they will cover you while you are moving. Only then do you advance.
    Just a few pointers. Otherwise, I loved the video, the music, your awesome cadpat, the ghillie suit and the pretty girl in it!
    Keep it up, go shoot some bad Guys! Or bad targets!
    Souces: I am an Infantryman (demolitions/mines Specialist and 40mm Grenadier --> equivalent of m203).

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but I also kinda found a problem with one of the final scenes where two of the squad members were moving forward and the other two were firing their weapons right behind them with no cover around and a minimum distance of what looked to be not even 10 meters. Isn't that a training hazard? Granted in actual combat I doubt that'll be your first concern but still.

    Don't listen to all these CHAIRBORNE Rangers, and even the SALTY ass vets here critiquing your vid. METT-T dictates your distance between each other during movement, and different units use different hand signals. As long as everyone in the team knows wtf they mean then you're good. Good baseline for an ambush, I wouldn't have opened fire with the sniper though, you want as much lead as quick as possible down range initially. Your sniper provides sniper over watch and support. I would have assaulted straight through the objective, making sure my sniper lifted fire, hit my LOA, and then used the center peel to break contact, then re-org and break contact entirely after a safe distance away. Remember METT-T always dictates movement, so if trees are set far apart then that's how far you are apart on the ambush because that's your cover, and your TL can call a wedge, ranger file, tight 360 whenever he chooses. Don't worry about the weapon malfunction because better here on your battle drills then in combat. That's the whole purpose of doing live fires. Decent small unit tactics. Godspeed

      I agree with Vincent. I wouldn't want the enemy to know where my sniper fire came from. I would let the assault team engage first and have my sniper as over-watch/support. With the sound of our rifles engaging, they wouldn't even know about the sniper. We used to drill opening fire with a sniper V.I.P. Kill, then assault through while machine gunners on top of hills provided cover fire as we moved up, that was our Standard Operational Procedure for years but that changed.

      I agree with what you said! Thank you! Literally couldn't have said it better but a question; Would you want the sniper to stray off like that? Or would you send a buddy (preforably one with a regular carbine) along with them? In scenarios like this I always like to pair people even if it means one less guy on the main front. Also what kind of Military/LE experience do you have? Just curious if you don't mind commenting, no big deal.

    • @nonvisi79
      @nonvisi79 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nateo200 Mission will dictate and the operational level of your team and your assets. If you have a small team, the objective is relatively small, and your team is at a level where you can leave your sniper on his own without a spotter then it's plausible. If it is a sniper team going out on a particular mission then yes you should always have a sniper and a spotter. But since he's operating as part of a team in on a relatively small objective then it would be plausible. I was a Scout/Sniper with the 10th Mountain Division, U.S. Army. I was the Senior Scout Observer and Point Man for a light infantry reconnaissance team. Contrary to field manuals and SOPs there were times where either I or another team member were out of sight of the rest of the team providing advance eyes on during movement, but nothing crazy far, and we also had radio comms that assisted. Also having a designated rally point after breaking contact will help you rally up after a hasty ambush. But those tactics will usually only work with small units. Larger units will have trouble operating in that manner simply because of command and control issues.

    It looked great, fairly well set up; the green was a little bright, but camo rarely is perfect for your environment. In forests or even most camouflage situations you generally want something darker, to blend in with the darker area, when you're hiding in the shadows, and just not to attract attention to yourselves (bright colors/shiny things tend to attract attention in general).
    It wasn't horrible though, and I was impressed that you had so much full body camouflage and generally put effort into your equipment! The covering fire was over-all pretty good, and you have a decent squad set up (SAW guy, marksmen, riflemen n stuff). Of course, normally your enemy wouldn't stay out in the middle of nowhere without cover in the woods and might have even seen you coming, and wouldn't sit still in a firefight but, that's paper targets for you.
    Over-all I liked it! It was very interesting, and I liked that all of you moved with intensity and speed, and worked together as a team. You might be a little more careful with magazine changes and move a little more in unison, but otherwise it looked fine, especially on the fundamentals.
    Over-all it looked cool! You moved quickly to maintain your momentum and acted quickly. You might practice in airsoft or other things just to get some training where you respond to other people. As a fireteam (5 guys or so, instead of a full squad) your options are obviously going to be limited, but I really liked your set up. Most of the things that stood out to me (as bad) were relatively minor in all honesty. Was your SAW Gunner, with the drum, using an Ak-74 or an Ak-47? I liked that PTR G3. xP
    To just throw something in there, you might do well with some grenades or grenade launchers, but of course those are illegal/expensive. They're force multipliers that on a concentrated enemy can take out a lot of people really quickly. In any WROL situation you might consider making some improved explosives, or getting a flare launcher and trying some specialty rounds or something; later on try some drills with smoke grenades/flash bangs, search up how they're generally used and whatnot. I don't find this to be a fault at all (some units in RL barely use explosives or smoke grenades and such) but it is an idea of some kind. Flash bangs or something maybe, tear gas to disorient as your first attack in an ambush. xP

    All the dogging on here about people training or the mistakes made or that civvies shouldn't be training by both military and civilians alike is troubling. First of all for those who do not have the experience, watch any actual combat vids or speak with combat veterans and you will see and hear that mistakes are always made, you train to minimize the mistakes. As far as the comments about citizens training are concerned, are they expected to wait for the military(or police) for protection for their families? for their friends or their neighborhoods if danger is at the door? Every American should be trained to defend themselves and should have a good working knowledge of firearms and tactics. There are dozens of "what if" scenarios that would validate having this training and our Constitution recommends it....a well regulated militia. Yes the commitment, the sacrifices, the training and brotherhood of being in the military is something that cannot be replaced or undervalued in any way but it is elitist to admonish them for training to protect themselves.

Interested in how it would fare on a fire support teams ability to return and bring aggressive fire to a small unit vs a larger force. Saw it deployed on TH-cam in full automatic. Thinking it would be a bitch to watch it in action. Thanks nice vid.

    Incomplete camo (rifles and black accessories), traveling within frag distance, and severe ignorance of movement discipline, namely with disruption to the environment, otherwise its better than 99% of the other "tactical" moment vids I see on here.

    • @aztec521
      @aztec521 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      After viewing this video for the initial time, I noticed an operator touching/signaling to another operator that he was last man, WITH HIS TRIGGER HAND. Not that his finger should have been on the trigger mind you, but that his trigger hand should have remained on the pistol grip.

    • @CPLBSS88
      @CPLBSS88 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      aztec521 Dosent really matter... sure, you could shoot your rifle with one hand then but lets be honest here, you are not really going to be that effective at it, so in the end, you have to get both hands on the weapon to be effective. The support hand placement is usually more important than the shooting hand on a rifle. I always signaled with my shooting hand because if I had to hit the ground really quick, it was there to support me as I go down. Typically our shooting hand is going to be stronger than our support hand because it is our dominate side. this is just one of those tactical expert myths that looks good on paper, but in the real world, it does not really matter. That's not to say I am suggesting the same thing when using a pistol. In a perfect world, we should be cross-dominate but this world is not perfect.

    Something I do when shooting in the woods. The sniper should put something soft down between the rifle and the tree to minimize the felt/observed recoil. As the vibration goes into the tree and back into the rifle it will be jarred from its position and he will have to find his point of aim again. A soft contact item like a folded boonie cap will fix this.
    One more thing is you must be close if you ambush them and then advance. Which means you dont have far to go to retrieve stuff. In RIP 75th we threw down our Rucks and used them as a makeshift bipod to have sustained fire from a solid platform and it adds extra ballistic protection. After the advance everyone who will get in the fight is probably dead and you can go back 30 meters and get your ruck. Then Charlie Mike. Just a thought for later. Not arm chair quarterbacking. One teacher to another.
