Great reminders brother! There are so many steps to getting in the air that become automatic, yet can easily be missed without mental reminders. Loved the flight... looking forward to a mild day for a nice cruise!
wise words! thanks for the upload. i love to watch these little reminders that this hobby comes with the need for respect. many pilots here dont have that. they fail. they set up. they fail again over and over. putting in more risk to get up at all cost! they often laughing about me and my "too careful behavior". my 6 meter high carbon fiber windsock to see whats actually going on up where the wing is while they have a 30cm wooden stick near trees with a shopping bag attached. so many times something didnt felt right and i abort launch or not even try to launch at all. they got cocky. ignored my warnings and paid the price with shredded wings or broken props. sooo many times! gives me great comfort that i try to keep the mindset: if it doesnt feel right, it probably isnt! i made a mistake. i go back and sit down a minute to reflect on that. your video shows perfectly what happens in situations like those. very nice upload! it doesnt take much to show off skills. but it takes ballz to share mistakes as well so we can learn from them. i did a similar upload too where my pullstart exploded midair. its been months and i still recover from that mentally. keep the blue side up mate
Crazy thing is the same thing happened to me on a foot launch about a month and a half after Kyle's incident (and he was my instructor). Fortunately my injury wasn't as bad as his. I only lost the very tip of my left pinky (the cartilage part). Fully healed now and flying a trike set-up.
If it can happen to Kyle it can happen to anybody.. Only double hooped/fully enclosed props for me. Total safety is never guaranteed, but you can stack the odds in your favor!
Glad to hear no injury or damage. At what point do you usually add power at launch, an example I only add power when the wing is directly above me, my theory is that when the wing is directly above the likely hood of the prop grabbing a line is less. I know a lot of pilots who add power with the wing at a 35 - 45 degree angle. Just wondering if my theory is correct. Great video and thanks for sharing!
I like to add power when the wing is JUST past the point it brings me to a stop. If its nill wind day, I aint got enough ass to wait for it to get fully overhead. However, its a double edged sword. I've learned the hard way that if yuo add power a shade too early, you merely low drag the wing longer and end up having to pull lines from the prop if you fail.
This is a great question and you'll get a few answers. My process is - with a nice headwind -power of course isn't needed. No wind or slight tail wind, I'll use the motor to "bump" the wing up a little faster but making sure I'm feeling good even pull on the risers and harness throughout - and of course ready to kill it. The power helps provide faster tension to the lines to minimize anything grabbing. When your wing comes up "soft" there is more slack in the lines and slight adjustments (twisting or stepping left or right to get under wing) can cause a line grab. The only times I've had a line grab is no wind, trying to run the wing up (no power) as your launch techique isn't as smooth (posture and lean back is harder when your using so much effort to pull wing up). My .02, but everyone has to work within their own comfort zone. I was taught this technique in training and happy to have learned (and trust) it as it has really made no wind launches easy.
Nice flight. I had a similar line issue last year. Hsd to get One line replaced. Irs located not that far from you somewhere near Charlotte. Reasonable cost and quick service.
I had a mean learning curve and it also taught me how to replace lines. Its not too bad with newer gliders, as the lines are still at spec length. Sometimes it easier to simply send an unbroken of the same line to be replaced, and let them match that. Lines =$20. Props on the other hand... well, most of us know that story all too well.
Cameras can be uber distracting, same as cell phones. I wouldnt worry about your mistake too much. It had just simply gone to shit and everything was going soft. The big mistake is also kind of a blessing. You had determination is all. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesnt. Thanks for another vid. I am SO ready for warmer weather. Bend over a hair more on landing turn and MAYBE that cam wont collect your lines :)
thank you for sharing. I have a little bit of distracting to use 360 cam during flight, feel to much workload, i.e to turn ON the cam, extend the stick and put it under my thigh. What do you think the best way (and how's your steps?) to set 360cam on recording mode during flight? Do I need to turn to recording mode before launch?
I think it best to get some altitude, then turn on the 360 camera and extend the stick and put it under your thigh. It does take a moment, but it is not too bad (without gloves).

My rule of thumb is to wait for the lines to come off the cage before I add power.

That's the place. They also repaired a tear in my wing as well as an inspection. Ended up just like new.
