Colin Steele McRae
Colin Steele McRae, MBE (5 August 1968 - 15 September 2007) was a Scottish rally driver born in Lanark. The son of five-time British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae and brother of rally driver Alister McRae, Colin McRae was the 1991 and 1992 British Rally Champion and, in 1995 became the first British person and the youngest to win the World Rally Championship Drivers' title, a record he still holds.
McRae's outstanding performance with the Subaru World Rally Team enabled the team to win the World Rally Championship Constructors' title three times in succession in 1995, 1996 and 1997. After a four-year spell with the Ford Motor Co. team, which saw McRae win nine events, he moved to Citroën World Rally Team in 2003 where, despite not winning an event, he helped them win the first of their three consecutive manufacturers' titles. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to motorsport in 1996.[2]
McRae died in 2007 when he crashed his helicopter near his home. The accident also killed his son and two family friends. In November 2008 he was posthumously inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. Subaru Impreza 555

On his promotion for 1993, McRae initially drove the Prodrive-built Group A Subaru Legacy alongside Finns Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Markku Alén. McRae then won his first WRC rally in the car at that year's Rally New Zealand. It was also the first rally win for the newly formed Subaru World Rally Team, shortly before the Legacy was due to be pensioned off in favour of the new Subaru Impreza 555. Such were the rising fortunes of his young Subaru factory team as they competed against the frontrunning Toyota-powered Team TTE, who were excluded from the championship after the 1995 Rally Catalunya due to the use of an illegal air restrictor. It took only until 1995 for McRae to win the drivers title, which he secured with a victory in a straight contest with his double champion teammate, Carlos Sainz, on the season-ending Rally of Great Britain. Although still a winner with the outfit in individual rallies in succeeding years, including, increasingly, more specialised events such as the Acropolis Rally, Safari Rally and the Tour de Corse, McRae could not better second place in the standings in either 1996 or 1997, on both occasions behind Finland and Mitsubishi Ralliart's Tommi Mäkinen. He helped Subaru complete their run of three consecutive manufacturers' titles during this time. In what would turn out to be his final season with the team, in 1998 he won three more rallies and placed third in the standings, as well as winning the Race of Champions in Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands. カンピオナートムンドラリー

being a 90s kid this is an example of how awesome my childhood was! Colin McRae Vs Tommi makkinen, 22B Vs Evo 6! God, these were the times, the golden age of WRC! Sure Group B was great, but the late 90s were insanely great!

Owen Evans Here in Canada , Subaru is one of the more popular rally manufacturers. Every time I see one, I have a rush of memories... I still pray for a return someday. Happy to see Toyota back in WRC though.

there were legendary cars like Citroen, puegot, lancia, Mitsubishi, Audi, ford, vw,skoda, Hyundai, mini, Porsche,Saab,Nissan,Suzuki, etc.. but none came closer to subaru with that kinda charm or karizma, still so many of them love this machine. it left seeing wrc ,after subaru exited.
Vivek John lancia was the legend of legends, my 3 favourite drivers ever won their championships for Subaru but lancia had what no other manufacturer has ever had before or since and even to do it with such an old design and without manufacturer support (last integrale championship victory) is an incredible achievement which further cements their claim on being the champions of the champions as an undeniably obvious fact.
Subaru are up there but I'd say behind audi (they made the most important car (all be it a flawed design in many ways) in the history of loose surface motorsport).
I have only one name in mind when people say legend Lancia.

@@theant9821 Lancia are the last 2 wheel drive to win the WRC with the 037 and they were up against 4 wheel drive, but for me, nothing ever came close to the Audi Quattro or the Subaru Impreza for looks, sound and the way they handled under the right driver

thing is, it isn't just him. If you look at the car, you'll that it carries either number 3 or 4. 3 is indeed McRae, but the 4 is Piero Liatti, an Italian tarmac specialist who won the 1997 rallye monte carlo

Who's in their early thirties that remembers the feeling they got when they seen a subaru imprezza on the road when they were around 10 years old. Seeing it in a magazine or a toy. It's part of my childhood. Such an iconic car that became that way due to colin mcrae.
I'm in my 50s and had an Impreza and used to go out in it at around 1am in country lanes so at that time of night you could see lights coming as the roads would be quiet and I could really give it some beans, great times!

Aww man, this brings back a lot o memories. I loved watching Colin attack each course. The boys today are good, but I believe back then they were the best. I used to have the XBox game that was named after him. I wish I still had it! Thanks for the memories. I will be watching again.

I grew up watching Colin race during this era! And in the states that was rare, because WRC wasn't televised like it is now. I found rally racing on some random foreign channel. In the late 90's everyone was all about Honda. When people asked me what car I liked I said Subaru! I got so many confused looks because Subaru in USA wasn't really popular like it is now. Now everyone loves Subaru.
Amazing, but they lost. why is he and this SO much more famous than Makinen who won in another great car... the evo 5? and why is McRae's 95 model impreza which DID win, not popular? lol

Demetrio De Angelis Because this is not the real speed, it was sped up for sure, look at the people’s motion. Many youtube rally videos I see are actually sped up (which I don’t like and consider as cheating).
BTW I did not in any means intend to say the driving and the cars are not amazing👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻, it is more than amazing, I wish could drive like 50% of the way these guys do☺️.

That Prodrive dump valve chirp love it. Used to have a forge dump valve sound like that.
It's the dump valve. The chirpy ones were pioneered by prodrive and forge motorsports. An old top gear reviewed a prodrive concept car with one. It dumps the charge in a staggered way causing the noise. Fitting one to a modern turbo install could kill the turbo quick.
+mrrsmurf Wrong, it's called compressor surge nothing to do with a dump valve
+john hyslop something to do with the anti turbo lag I'm pretty sure, it's why you get the limited short bursts instead of the sudden immediate release of air pressure within the induction system. Keeps the turbine spinning at high rpm even at low engine speeds, so you get that immediate burst of power when you plant your foot down
