NOTHING beats the original version of this song by Miss Cherrelle!
Sounds like a Prince record bc this is produced by the incomparable Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis 🔥 that 80s Minneapolis sound
Prince fired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Alexander O'Neal too, they all ended working together down the road, Cherrelle and Pebbles are cousins, they both worked with ConFunkShun before going their own way ✌🏾
@@apprentessjgooden2263😂Prince was “no joke” about his rehearsals…Jimmy & Terry didn’t show up and Prince said “ya’ll out”😂😂
Cherelle released this song in 1984 (I think) and the Artist Robert Palmer released a cover version around 1986. Cherrelle's version hit big on the dance charts where as Roberts went into the top 5 on Pop/billboard 100.
I also like RP’s cover of “You Are In My System”.
Palmer, despite not having a break dancing gorilla, has the better music video because of the.. VISUALS😏
It's sounds like his music too.
She’s one of Princes many musical chirren😂😂
I think about this song every time I hear a story about a “Nice guy” aka a guy that can’t take nope for an answer.
“Horny ass Gorilla… he can dance tho” Jack u crack me up!!!!😂 I love this song by Cherelle!!!! I listen to it at least once a month. 🥰
Yea, that's Jam and Lewis making their presence felt on this one. That beat and melody is one of a kind
They made Cheryl Lynn Encore their first #1 the year before this
This was produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, long time members of The Time headed by Morris Day. They were all a part of that Prince group out of Minnesota. That's why it sounds like Prince. Try Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal doing "Never Knew Love Like This" for more great vocals and more down tempo, Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam stuff.
Classic! Robert Palmer covered it a couple years after Cherrelle released it
Queen Latifah has a sample of it, "turn you on."
Mariah Carey not only covered it, she worked with the same original producers, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Mariah also sang over the original Cherrelle instrumental.
Oooh yes, that's that Minneapolis sound. Get it Cherelle. Love this.❤❤
Gotta checkout Cherrelle “Everything I Miss At Home” and Alexander O ‘Neal and Cherrelle “ Never Knew Love Like This “
Yes!!!!
Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis produced many of her songs a favorite ❤
You should hear the extended version. The breakdowns are heavenly.
Produced by the GREAT Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis who graduated from the Prince camp (they were members of Prince's legendary concept funk group The Time, fronted by Morris Day. One of J & L's first productions after getting fired from the Time. That's why it's so similar to Prince's sound. Also.....Cherrelle got some jams.
Was just listening to this yesterday! Love it! 🔥🔥
Classic classic classic!! Outstanding request! Cherrelle I awesome and always had catchy songs.
It's the Minneapolis sound. The song was produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
It's definitely the "Minneapolis sound", written and produced by Jam and Lewis. Robert Palmer covered it a year or two later. Just another example of a white artist covering a song from a black artist within the same year or two and having much more radio play and success, like they did with Motown artists.
💯
Really each puts their mark and slant on it.... Palmer's cover fared better on the pop chart while the Cherrelle version was a hit on the R&B chart. Cherrell's was R&B Electro-Funk Dance Dance-Pop Eighties Funk.... what a label. Hair bands were hitting it big for the 80s. Mariah Carey also did a version of the song also...
Palmer's cover version gave the song's lyrics a whole new meaning as a typical ladies man and his new trademark of those sexy gyrating female models was a key to his skyrocket of success this era and this songs larger success and MTV play in '85 onward. Palmer has been sort of accused of stealing from R&B artist... Yet even the Cherrelle version and song itself is called top rip-off of Prince (rather his sound).
Many artist sampled even within a couple years of hits for others.... nothing new here and of course Rap Hip Hop artist sampled many 80s hits 90s 2000s. Many artist had hits with the same songs... Elvis had a hit with a song that Frank Sinatra also did as a hit and on and on. Many of us know that Dolly Parton wrote and had a hit in the early '70s with her song - I will always Love You. We know that Whitney Houston took it to even further stardom and icon status in the 80s.
This was off debut album for Cherrelle and for Palmer who as already seasoned and not young ... this was off his '85 album that he found his mojo in videos with his gyrating sexy female models in the back-round that skyrocketed to success by MTV. MTV was pop oriented not so much artist placed as R&B or Metal or Dance. Of course many crossover artist made it with hits where a video could only elevate the song to stardom along with studios promotion levels.
The music industry was all about selling and making $$$. Someone decided what songs gained the most attention. Promotion level also and less so for a debut album and just timing with a new sound and the stars line up that gave us one-hit-wonders even.... The artist who is Cherrelle was not a rags to riches story as she grew up in an upscale neighborhood of Beverly Hills, CA. Cherrelle’s Mother was a doctor and Father was a well known entertainment lawyer.
Thank you Demetria for the request!!!
Demetria,🔥 request.
As always 🔥🔥 request Demetria.❤❤
I hope the Cherrelle requests keep coming bc she has several bangers eg “You Look Good To Me”. ✌🏽
I have all her music on my playlist. You Look Good To Me is my favorite hands down!
Yes Jack! This song is still a banger that I keep in rotation on my playlist 💯🔥🔥🔥
This was and still is my jam. I still listen to it often.
This song is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 great request so far loving it much love ❤❤❤
Another Song🎶 ALREADY on my🎶 phone!!🎶♥️🙌🏽✔😎
Oh I love this song
This is one of the the Minneapolis sounds. You can tell our sounds.
Cherelle is pebbles cousin
Mariah Carey has a very dope remake of this she did for the Glitter soundtrack!
Robert Palmer covered this song. It wasn't bad. Cherrelle killed it, but I liked Robert too.
My understanding is that Palmer heard Cherelle's version and assumed she was a young girl. And he didn't like the idea of a teenager singing these lyrics. So he decided to record it and give a male perspective. I think it worked. I like both versions.
@@Chefcorky He didn't like the fact that she was 17 when the song was released, kinda like how everybody was skeptical of working with Evelyn "Champagne" King when she made Shame with that grown up voice at 17
Robert Palmer covered this Song as well
Please contrast this with Robert Palmer‘s cover- I think you will like it, as well as some of his other songs. And please react to Cherrelle and Alexander O‘Neal‘s “Never Knew Love Like This” (If you haven’t already). Love your channel! You kept our spirits up during the pandemic :-).
Palmer's version is very good, too. "Everything I Miss At Home" is one of Jam & Lewis' best tracks.
Mariah covered this in her movie Glitter. It's so good!!
Ah! One of my fav jams ever.❤ Love this. Also, soo relatable back during my dating days. Robert Palmer and Mariah did versions of this song too.
OMG I have not heard this song in ages!
My theme song with men who act like King Kong (@4:16)! 😁This album (own it!) has some great songs on it. Jimmy Jam said that the inspiration for this song was listening to Cherelle's stories about dating: "She was a player! She claims that she didn't mean to turn these dudes on...but she did!"
Side-note: There's a line in "Purple Rain" where Apollonia jokingly calls Prince's character, The Kid, "King Kong." Maybe that's where this video concept came from...because Apollonia said that when Prince took her out for dinner to interview her for the role of his girlfriend, she thought he was gay at first but by the end of the night, she realized he is "super straight." 😂
Jam & Lewis used to be in The Time, a band that Prince created to be his funk alter ego (and nemesis in the Purple Rain movie). He fired J&L from the band when they missed a flight while touring with Prince, because they broke the "no outside jobs" rule; they were coming back from a production session for S.O.S. Band. With more free time, they were able to write and produce for more acts. So thank Prince's big ego for all of the J&L-produced songs that you enjoy!
@4:53 - A lot of 80's music videos were "conceptual" (artsy and cheesy!) like this. Aha's "Take On Me" is a great example. Early-mid 90's videos like Aaron Hall's "I Miss You" and R. Kelly's "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time" with deep plots.
I was more familiar with the Robert Palmer version... but I knew of this one too. Cherrelle had some hits too... as others pointed out this was written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of the Time and Alexander O'Neal with whom she has several songs was also a former member of the Time.
You need to react to the songs 'Innocent' and 'Saturday Love' by Alexander O'Neal featuring Cherrelle. My favorite songs of '85. Another production of Jam and Lewis. They were on fire in the early 80s and don't forget they were responsible for Janet's career explosion. The 70s was hot and the 80s was lit💃💃💃
He already did
You need to listen to the 7min album version. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at their best. "You Look Good To Me", "Fragile", "Artificial Heart", "Where Do I Run To", "Affair", "Everything I Miss At Home" her biggest hit, my personal favorite "Oh No, It's You Again". I love Cherrelle.
Also Mariah Carey did a remake for TBE Glitter sound track.
Mariah covered this for her Glitter album/sdtk
🔥 request Demetria!
Good song. Will you please react to You Are In My System by The System?
Mariah did a cover of this on the Glitter soundtrack!
Mariah Carey's version goes hard too🔥
Both produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
I like Mariah’s cover but also wish she had released a full version of Val Young’s “If You Should Ever Be Lonely”; it slapped.
Mariah remade this for the glitter soundtrack
I like that you listen to old school songs
Jack is
So 🥰
Cherelle had plenty of hits with the incomparable Jam & Lewis production team, especially when she collaborated with Alexander O’Neal
Shout out to all those conceptual '90s videos.
Maybe we have a different definition of a conceptual video, but you have Michael Jackson videos from the 80s (Thriller), Madonna videos from the 80s (Like a Prayer), and others.
ANOTHER JIMMY JAM AND TERRY LEWIS MASTERPIECE
@jackreacts hey can you react to this song covered by MS.MARIAH CAREY in her HAY DAY !!! For the GLITTER MOVIE SOUNDTRACK !!! LOVE U … Love from Las Vegas !!! ❤️🙌🏼
You HAVE to listen to Mariah’s cover of this song ❤
Now you must do Robert Palmer's version
Mariah Carey covers the song for the glitter soundtrack. You should check it out.
Classic song! Mariah Carey did a cover that was pretty 🔥🔥 too
❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊😊
Check out I didn't mean to turn you on by Robert Palmer.
Gorilla was sprung on Cherrelle 😅😅
😂 haven’t heard that term since the 90’s Tisha Campbell-Joe Torry movie of the same name. 😉
Hi handsome. Luv this song. U got good taste. Come chill with me with some cold beers😎🌹💙. 🍺🍻
Great song. The music video is based off King Kong.
Flashback...
I like and respect the original but I have to say maybe because I heard it first I prefer Robert Palmer's version. I find it ironically funny the idea of a man saying that to a Woman though it does happen.
Mariah Carey did a version of that that was never released. It should have been. Peace
it was released. it was on "glitter."
Check out the Robert Palmer cover. I think is better
Unpopular opinion...😬...I prefer Robert Palmer's sexier remake of this song.
I respect the honesty.✌🏽
Nah boooo
@@princerob425 😄
The Robert Palmer version is MUCH better!
