Lyrics:
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools," said I, ""You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you""
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound
Of silence"

I am 82 years old and a fan of the S&G version, but I am totally overwhelmed by Disturbed's cover. It is fascinating, mesmerizing, and I simply can't get enough of experiencing the emotion.
This is what great music is all about. World class.
Dennis ❤️
@@wish21100 ?
thats because youve seen so many things in your life and it brings back memories
And great music is also about, and always has been, musicians taking inspiration from one another and building on each other's creativity.
I am middle aged and love the original but I couldn't agree more - this version makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time
I played this song to my grandad when it first came out a couple of weeks before he died and he cried. Ive never saw him cry before, my nana said it was the first time since after the WW2. Died at the age of 102, love you grandad.
Edit: I was contemplating if i should even write this as the aim of this comment wasn't likes (clearly), however i feel the need to say thankyou everyone who had liked this comment- like seriously nearly 300, wow. But more importantly thankyou everyone who left kind comments wishing me well and keeping my spirits up. Youre all amazing and i hope you have a great day/night dependi g on where you are in the world.
Skittle ❤️
Loss is really hard BUT, remember his life, death is not a loss, it just reminds us of who we were blessed to have in our lives. Focus on all the times together. We are all going there one day. It could even be tomorrow. Cherish today and those Around you. 👍
I went through the same thing u did skittle i had to relatives pass away and I every time I think of them I get tears in my eyes 😪😪
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Dang man! That’s seriously touching. First off good for you for even having the thought process to share this awesome song with him. It must’ve touched him pretty deeply and I’m curious if you also let him watch the video. Thank God for veterans like him and don’t ever let them be forgotten. You’re lucky to have grown up with such a great man
My family just used this for my Father's funeral. He loved this version so much, even at 84. So powerful.
Sorry for your loss
Siento mucho su pérdida 😢😢
May he rest in peace.
I’m sure he would have been overwhelmed
Had this played at my daughter's funeral two years this May she loved this version of it she was just 52 years of age went to bed didn't wake up from her sleep .😢💔
A splendid, timeless song! How many here to listen to it in 2024?

And me. The best.
This song is better...serious...

My dad used to play the original when i was little. He's 82 now and when i go back home he's playing Disturbed cover on full blast! He loves it.
I think it may be full blast because his hearing is lacking
Nothing wrong with his faculties! Just loves it. My mum says "The sound of silence is deafening" what a quote ha ha.
Gold you sound like the old man. if it's too loud you are too old.
Love it Bryan !
Your dad is awesome and this song is awesome!
my mom loved this version. She had to hear it everyday. she was battling Parkinsons and Dementia. She had gotten very weak and bed ridden, but we still played this for her at least once a day until the day she passed . It was playing during her final breath. I miss you mom!!
❤

♥️
Bless you to the moon and back. My dear mother is 99.
I'm so very sorry!rip to your mom🙏 she would want you to be happy and keep on going okay 🫂💛🩷❤️
My Dad passed away a few weeks ago. He raised me on oldschool rock, a big fan of the 60s and 70s. This cover always resonated with him, and he played it all the time. He loved it so much more than the original that we played it at his service. I don't have words for how I feel right now, but to Disturbed I would just like to say thank you for this cover. It ended up being so important to my family...
May your father Rest in Peace! best wishes for you and your whole family!
I'm a little old lady and this is my favorite version of Sound of Silence.
I love this version too

Disturbed, When this came out I was homeless, on drugs, and then jail. I now have a house, job, and husband. I’m 64 and have never heard of Disturbed but loved this song from the 60’s…
This man really understood the message and WOW!
His rendition gets to the place deep within my soul….
It’s a connection that transcends time…
Sometimes I believe it’s a universal truth that is shared by all who have been there….even tho the experience may differ….the place it takes each person is the same…..
I love this ❤

From Wikipedia: "Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.""---That sounds a lot like where we are right now.
.
Maybe. But just because one person isn't connected to their feelings doesn't = we ALL have his impediment. Garfunkel was an odd guy at times, like all of us. I'm a realist. I think that sociopaths have taken over by promising the lie of immortality (religion) which they neither understand nor care about. There are still principled people out there who aren't sociopaths--- they're codependents- lol.
I laugh, but I'm serious. Codependents are those trying to understand why the sociopath is pushing a blade through their heart. "They must have a good reason to do this", and, "what happens to me doesn't matter as long as I please this random sociopath". Or, something....The issue is that sociopaths don't react better if you're kind to them. In fact, it might be worse. Liars believe everyone is lying. Thieves believe everyone is going to steal from them.
If you're kind to them, they will immediately go on high-alert! "No one is nice unless they want something or are lying"!
Better to just take control. At their core, they're weak, angry, emotionless, and have terrible self esteem which leads to liking to torture others in whatever way they can. Not the sort you want in charge of other people, wouldn't you say??

I am turning 61 may 24. I've been to so many concerts mostly rock. For this rock band to do such a ballad was amazing.

You know you do a cover well when the original singer compliments it.
Damn right about that.

This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard. SO much more intensity and feeling than the 'gentle' original..
paul greenwood being honest I prefer the original.
It's just a matter of taste. The message itself, instead of original or a cover, is beautifull. And there it's end at the songwriter. Songs like this...is just a tribute in my eyes.

I don't disagree with you, but the original was also awesome. There are a LOT of covers floating around and I find this one I would put on my playlist, whilst most others I would not bother with.
eh i like em both, without the original they could have never make this cover but, i agree this version is amazing, and unique to the original.

Totally agree 👍
I want to hear him sing Hallelujah ❤
he doesn't just know the lyrics , he understands them.
+IamZeus1100 He captures the strength of the message doesn't he. You can practically see the entire world standing listlessly with no inner motivation as slaves to the age and modernism silently allowing themselves to be led on after hearing this rendition. Of course, not everyone hears the same interpretation to this song. But that's what makes it a work of art though doesn't it?
+IamZeus1100 I work in customer service at a corner store and after watching people throwing their weeks pay at a system built to steal their livelihood, I have to say this music really speaks to me. Don't ever support the lottery guys. It's the most depressingly broken thing in society and the amount of people it snares is sickening. There is a good reason why the poor people spend the most on it.
I closed my eyes while listening to the song. wow, that's so powerful, isn't it?
+Jeremy Curpen yes yes it is

It's 2023 and it's still a masterpiece! It never goes out of style. Years later and it's still one of the best songs ever written.
It was originally released in 1964 by Simon and Garfunkel, they were absolute masters of their time.

Stolen comment from deeper in this comment section. Bitchass
It would take you nearly 8000 years to watch this on repeat as many times as its been watched.
This man’s voice was made for this song. I like Simon and Garfunkel but Disturbed has a depth and vibration that totally manifests this song into holiness that just keeps reverberating over and over. I could listen to this in a continuous cycle all day every day.
Garfunkel once said the song is about "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly intentionally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." This is such a profound rendition of this song. Listened to it over and over again and feeling the pain right now in my daily life. God speed to those who feel alone and unable to talk to others.
In a world that's increasing divided, and specifically isolated by the pandemic, the message about people unable to connect to each other and understand each others minds is especially true.
You've said it all!
So true. God, may You show us the need to love each other closely, and appreciate community!
In this day and age of technology, I see the masses gathering and saying, but not listening.
Posting replies is now the norm of "communication", disturbingly so, as the song implies...
"We" (all of mankind online) are loosing touch with what is actual communication, aka give and take, listening and reciprocation of the verbal, the total digestion of and integration of the information from the individual.
If we do not return to a form of personalized and intimate interactions, then we might as well not bother with such things as "individual rights".
Why bother speaking out if no one is willing to listen, why bother with speaking up if no one is going to reply.
I am referring to the "online communication" specifically, as the simplistic approach of it is actually quite damning and very much NOT truly communicating... like watching a movie and declaring a feeling of connection to the characters. True as it may be, still only a placebo to the real thing. An illusion of, but not to replace... just as a written sentence carries not the intricacies of nuance in spoken, all online is but a farce to what is really happening.
Virus or not, this isolation predates, and is far more prevalent than just a few years worth.
Artists have seen it coming for a long time, the signs ignored all the same...
...if anyone has read this far, I give you my hope, I give you my praise, and I have faith that you will take from this how truly precious another's time truly is.
Don't cry, I will handle that part.
Smile and let them know how you feel about their times with you!
What a voice! Thank you for the info on the song.
This is Real Music. It shows EMOTION
It tells a STORY
It doesn't DISRESPECT OTHER PEOPLE

Fuck man, i hope you're doing well. My mom was born 1968 and passed away on christmas, I never got to play her this song. Stay strong brother.
I think both Simon & Garfunkel and Disturbed reflected two different aspects of this song beautifully. Simon & Garfunkel reflected the emptiness of the soul, and Disturbed reflected the tragedy and sadness. However, since there was more grandeur and passion in Disturbed's version, they win with the song for me.
TheSarahkitten42 ?
PushandillPushback
It's in the instrumentals and voice where I'm finding more passion and grandeur, as if the group was crying as they were playing the song.
But, like I say, To each their own.
Autotune replicates that effect to the untrained ear.
TheSarahkitten42 the trolls movie did a great job
definitely was an amazing original, but in these chords it seems like this was the way it was meant to be.

Love how the classic old songs keep returning.
The old songs never left. They are there, forever, for you to listen to. What a stupid statement.
technically they ain't this generation barely know they exist
I believe he's referring to how they return to popularity despite all the new stuff that's constantly being released. Not a stupid comment.
***** some real old songs are starting to come back into circulation but as i said this generation think they know music when they don't like what they think is "ROCK" isn't actually ROCK theres a YT channel called the combat veteran he does a video skit exactly like it where his friend gets into his car and puts on "ROCK" look it up.
I agree this generation lacks an appreciation of good music, but genres evolve over time; there are many sub-genres of rock that you may not like but that doesn't mean they're not rock. They might not be a classic rock and roll band, but they still fall under the category of rock because they belong to a sub-genre of it. Unless of course you're talking about genres that are completely separate from rock, in which case I'd agree.
2024 April anyone?
Less than 10 million views to go to break 1 billion, lets speed it up guys!!

It is so rare that a cover magnifies the original and even in this extremely rare case, surpasses it!
Thank you Disturbed, thank so much for this prowess.
When I was a teenager back in the 70's I recall my dad saying that in 20 years the young people would laugh at my music just like I laughed at his. Now 50 years later I see kids listening to Led Zepplin and wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts and singing "Sound of Silence" I gotta say, Dad (RIP) you know I love you but they don't laugh at our music, they just remake it.
Amen!!!
I'm a 2000s kid, and yes accurate but I prefer your version. I wish I was born in the 70s.
I think you're just like your father - generalising "young people" as if it's a single person.
Absolutely.
My grandson wishes he was born late 60s...early 70s.
I listen to this every single night after my treatment for prostate cancer and it makes me feel better to be able to see the world through other peoples life that they have had or could have had.
Wishing you the best. My husband was also treated for prostate cancer.❤❤
Almost ended my life to this song in high school... and here I am in 2024 still listening to this amazing cover.

I remember crying my eyes out being in the middle of a depressive episode that almost took me out.. 8 years ago when the Disturbed cover came out. It's bittersweet but I love it. I've come so far because I gave myself another chance.

Covid dont exist. They fabricated a massive plandemic in 2019 of October called event 201. 4 months later on the us news they claim someone died, learn about pshycological military warfare. Your all being played... the mask wearing is a Iniation into the new system.
So sorry to hear bro. Hope things get better, god bless man🙏🏻
In this year of 2020 I'm here listening to this song instead of panicking
I'm with you 👍
Excellent choice. May I suggest Spiegel im Spiegel?
No,te wykonanie już obiegł świat, wszyscy to grają, nawet na podwórku ❤❤❤❤
I can't get enough of this song, so pure and beautiful, powerful, aggressive in just the exact right way.
Never would've expected a metal band to cover Sound of Silence this well.
Color me pleasantly surprised.
you should check out symphonic metal dude
this is basically what they do (with more metal guitar riffs tho)
...
Even the seemingly darkest, most brutally-minded of metal bands can have a soft, yet dark side. Disturbed is one of those bands.
Hes not alone many heavy metal singers have beautiful and soft voices like Marco Hietala from Nightwish "kiss while lips are red"
+kevin hiller Agreed. Marco is one of my favorite male metal singers.
Hello darkness my old friend...❤
are dreams
xddddddddddddddddd
darkness: piss off, i ain't your friend!
Ken Wong
😂
Kassandra Mightown "i've come to talk with you again"
Last song I heard with my father. Crippled and silent, i was alone with him for the last time that night. RIP
It’s 3:31 pm April 25th 2024 and I’m listening to this song in my hotel room in Sweden.
👋
❤
Didn't know Kratos can sing.
topcomment :D
LOL TRUE
Best :D

I owe you nothing!
this is the absolute best cover ever made of this song. Listen to the raw power and feeling in his voice, fucking incredible to hear.
Gilmer Monk ikr mean i luv this as much as the original one and i luv this one and the original one
the hooters
Gilmer Monk I know I didn't know his voice was THAT INCREDIBLE. I mean it's already good but I didn't know it was THAT GOOD
Gilmer Monk Its really shit. The voice doesn't fit and there is way too much sound going on.
this is trash
This song hits home. To my ex best friend and my ex wife mother of my one child!!! Men go through so much pain !!!!!! But society tells us we can't be soft so we hold it all in. This song hits my heart so hard. Hard to heal when we can't show emotin...it ruined my life for sure!!! 30 yrs later still feel the pain and I see it in his eyes. So powerful. Thank you Sully!!!😢
"To the neon god they made" - Best fckin part!
That bit gives me goosebumps like there's no tomorrow! I love it! :D
Ђенерал
Ragnar lothbrok is amazing 😉😉
I agree !!
Ђенерал i never understood what he meant by that. neon god. whats that mean
Two months ago I happened upon Disturbed doing The Sound of Silence.I'm 60 years old and had never before heard of Disturbed, but after hearing David's most awesome rendition, I fell in love with that soul-grabbing voice and am now a devoted fan of everything he does. Thanks David for bringing up some ghosts from my far past and making them even better. You have captured my imagination again.
David K. I am a 55 year old 'Metal Grandma' who has been a Disturbed fan for many years! Then this song came out & I am also 'in love' with David's powerful & SOULFUL voice! Today I see a new video from the same album/CD called Open Your Eyes & the comments are so very misguided! It's also a great tune to wake up with! Strap on the headphones & enjoy friend. Shalom.
I don't know why, but your comment gave me the feels ❤️
I'm 15 years old, I have loved any form of Rock for most of my life. I despise the sound of Rap and Hip-Hop, But this song is probably my new #1 song. The original following very closely.
My dad is 58 and while hard rock isn't out there for him he doesn't really listen to the new stuff. more old school. ozzy, Aerosmith ect. he bought the cd JUST for this song lol. he had us all in his radio room just so he show us the video and listen to the song on his speakers lol said my phone did it no justice lol
He has an amazing voice for sure. Everyone has their own interpretation of the lyrics, I'm on board with David Draiman as far as this darker vocalization. The Simon and Garfunkel beat should be with some lyrics about how two young lovers reunite. The harmony and bounce of it would at least match the lyrics better. All personal opinion though. To each their own.
Eine der ganz wenigen Ausnahmen wo die Coverversion das Original topt. Aber hier passen Stimme und Song perfekt zueinander. Diese immense Kraft der Stimme. Einfach phänomenal.
Played this in high school in choir. Loved it then and even more now.
Lost my best friend 6mos ago. Have no idea how to move forward. He kept me in line and in balance and now it’s all gone.
Are we sure David Drahmin isn't Kratos from god of war just living amongs in secracy
Best comment ever!
Love that comment man
Antwon Mianus wow... that's fucking hilarious lmao I thought of the same shit playing the God Of War Games
I am so inlove with your comment!
the world may never know lol
Sirs.. just a note from an old lady who accidentally found this version of a much loved song while looking for the older version.... and fell in love all over again. Such a magnificent performance of this lyric. Well done! Very well done! Not generally a fan of your style of music, just a little too "much" for an older music pallet, although I have to say that I do very much love many of your lyrics and the raw passion and righteous anger they invoke in me over the injustices and pain we suffer on this prison planet... but your version of this song... damn... when I heard it, I was so moved. In a completely different way from the way the older version always made me feel. By the last verse of the song I find myself breathless, my heart pounding... I want to join the "ranks" and break the silence..... Thank you, it has become a favorite on my playlist!
I also have to give a big holy crap to whoever put the graphics to the music. Perfection. And the lead singer's performance was also complete perfection. Perfect punctuation to the lyric and rhythm of the music. God this just fucks me up every time I watch it. It's so perfect for the time we live in right now. Thank you...
You don't type / seem old.
Lambert The Prick
thank you, I think... looking at 59 soon, but young at heart.
dreamchaisr1. what an elegant comment. respect to you maam. as a big fan of both palets as you put it, i say we need more people like you both in the music aspect and the world in general.
I am older than you and this is by far the best version ive ever heard, oh, and i love this genre, will sleep forever singing this, thank you ;)

This cover of this song hits my soul in a way that almost no other song can. I still get tears in my eyes when I listen to it. I cant explain why I seem to have such a strong connection with this piece in particular. But I do.
Me too ❤
I wanted to add a comment on what this means to me but I don’t have the words to truly convey the power of this music.
I love his voice when he goes high who agree? ❤️
I'm annoyed with it because you know he can go higher!!!
i love his voice period. dark haunted to gutteral growl. full range awesome!
I love his voice fro low to high! So
original
i agree😍
hi voice!!!!😍
Two songs, same lyrics, one sang with the sad resignation of acceptance and the other with the anger of resistance. Brilliant
well tbh... its past time we as the masses rise up and resist all this globalist BS.
Beautifully phrased
@@Matt-qv8zj Well said.
I was attempting to say something like that. But you said better than I could've. Well put...
Profound statement...
There's only one kind of person who could write this kind of song. And only a certain kind of person can perform it. The angst is real. Masterful!
Hello Miriam, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
