Funny story the main actor had not trained martial arts before this movie. Afterwards however he threw himself into martial arts of various styles and became a true martial artist.

Great film. I watched this with my dad in theatres back in 1985. We're Filipino, and it was hilarious seeing my dad react to all the things/places he recognized.
It's always funny watching these old films shot in the Philippines. They try to make everything seem so exotic, and we're like "We drive by that place everyday."
Joe, Michael Dudikoff, has a brief appearance in Tron. He's standing behind Flynn when Flynn stops and asks about Tron while Tron is fighting 4 guys with discs.
It was amazing as a kid to go into the video store to see the title, American Ninja and all these sequels next to each other on the shelf. I don't think I ever got past the second one though.
This was one of my favorite ninja movies as a kid believe it or not it's what made me wanna learn Ninjutsu. Also your daughter is adorable god bless her.
A childhood movie, I don't even know how many times I've watched it on VHS. The plot doesn't shine, several million in one suitcase is an example of that. But the cast is good.
This reaction was absolutely amazing. I recommend that you follow this up Gymkata but if you've already seen it, than do the rest of the American Ninja Movies. Each one is worse than the previous but more hilarious.
Oh man... A childhood favorite. When I was a kid in the early 90's, we didn't have cable TV so this movie would be on our local station. This was my karate hero lol. I'd get ninja toys (the costume, the weapons) from the local flea market and run around the house trying to emulate this movie. Mad respect for Michael dudikoff
I read that when Michael Dudikoff got the part, he had no martial art training at all. He was so dedicated to this role that he earned a 1st degree black belt. Happy New Year Mr. & Mrs. Movies
Judie Aronson (Patricia) was in Weird Science and as a 15-16 year old I had the biggest crush on her. This movie was just silly fun, I think the second was one was actually better if I remember correctly. Good times!
The hand motions Joe did in the cell is part of ninpo. A.k.a. ninja magic. Giving them extra abilities. Hearing what 8s silent, seeing what is invisible, endure what is excruciating.
Back when there was a serious ninja infestation. There were american ninjas, white ninjas, little ninjas, three ninjas and what have you. As a kid in the early 90's (that's when they came to my country), I've rented so many VHS with american B movies about ninjas and martial art it's crazy.
Ironically, maybe the realist thing in this movie is the part about Joe's master. In real life there was a Japanese soldier that hid in jungles in the Phillipines for between 20 and 30 years and did not know that WW2 was over. He didn't surrender until a former commander traveled to him and issued formal orders to surrender. I learned about that watching some documentary several years ago. He surrendered sometime in the mid-1970s. I don't believe he practiced ninjutsu though, but probably did have some type(s) of martial arts training, as he was a soldier. Crazy! 🤯
When this came out on VHS all the early adolescent boys in the mid 80’s were making training equipment from dad’s leftover junk and mimicking the moves, because we believed we could be ninja. There’s no crying in movie style ninjutsu replicated in the backyard! Watch part 2 and leave it.
The guy who plays Charlie is Phil Brock. His dad was my 8th grade speech and drama teacher in Lawton, Oklahoma. He used to show us stuff with his son in it like M*A*S*H and the Matt Dillon movie Tex. Coincidentally, I had another teacher in Marlborough, Massachusetts, who was the mother of Marcia Cross (Melrose Place). I shit you not, those two were in a movie together years later called Always Say Goodbye. Two teachers, from two different states where I lived, had children in Hollywood, and they ended up in a movie together. Small world.
The sho kosugi ninja films are worth checking out....enter the ninja, revenge of the ninja, ninja III the domination, 9 deaths of the ninja, pray for death, rage of honor
All credit to you two for taking the hit on our behalf. Thanks. 5 in the franchise!? The proof if ever it were needed of the stupidity of cults. Maybe one tomato if that tomato has lived forgotten for six months at the back of the larder and is now mainly green fur 😂

Happy New Year 🕛🎊🎉🎇🎉 One of the best Action B Movies from the now defunct CANNON FILMS. They filmed all their on a low budget of $10-$15 million dollars, and sadly, not all their films were box office or critical successes, which caused them to go bankrupt in 1987 and closed their doors in 1994, yet a lot of their films are certified cult classics.
This is my childhood right here. This and Sakura Killers. There was a great shop on old Carnaby Street in the 80s that sold us as 12/ 13yrs olds tonfa, sai, nunchuk and throwing stars.
Great reaction to this fun cheesy 80s action flick from Cannon films (that were known for doing fun chessy action flicks)... In case anyone didn't know the 1st Sargent Rinaldo (John LaMotta) in this movie, also played Trevor Ochmonek (the next door neighbor) on the hit 80s 'ALF' TV series...

Technical note: full gas tanks are less likely to drive explosions like that. Mostly empty gas tanks have gas vapor in the tank which is much more explosive than liquid gas. I wouldn't bother but the "that's why you don't drive with a full gas tank" crack has been used too many times.
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid in the 80s. If you want another fun slice of 80s martial arts cheese, I'd also recommend 1985's No Retreat, No Surrender which, among other things, features Jean-Claude Van Damme as an evil Russian.

American Ninja 1 and 2 are the best in the series. Canon did really good Ninja movies as well as introduce the world to Jean-Claude Van Damme in Bloodsport and Sho Kosugi in Enter the Ninja but Revenge of the Ninja is way better than Enter the Ninja.
Michael Dudikoff (Joe Armstrong) was in the first two movies and 4. The third was the last one with Steve James who starred with David Bradley. Bradley is also in the fourth and fifth movies. Along with those leading actors, the VIPS daughter is in Friday the 13th Part 4 and the guy (the MP guy) at 34:44 looks like Martin Kove from Cobra Kai and The Karate Kid. This is one of my fav B/low budget action flicks, I have the first four movies on DVD, still have to find the fifth one!!
When the ninja does the hand gestures, it's an actual ninja thing. It's just taken out of context. Each hand grip represents a different aspect of ninja "magic" that the practitioner thinks on while meditating. It's a focus device.
@@John_Locke_108There's an documentary called "Electric Bogaloo" that concentrated on the Cannon Films' action/exploitation era (1983-1987). The interviews are like AA meetings.
