in the summer of 1992 this storyline helped my to come out. This storyline was so profound for me. I faced many hardships for saying who I really was. I will always be greatful for the storyline. I would like to thank oltl for having the courage to show this because it forever changed my life.
I was never in the closet, I came out when I was 12 and had my first boyfriend. But I remember being so hungry for gay images, gay storylines in movies and television, and being disappointed so often that they were negative images. While this was a great storyline I resented that they got rid of Billy once this storyline was over. Yet I was also grateful for this story.
I came out on 1992, at the age of 28. I wish I had seen this then, it probably would've helped. I had known I was gay since I was 11, but I finally was able to accept it and tell people who I really was.
Really gutsy for ABC to do this important story line. There was no Will an Grace or Modern Family at that time. It was a young teen coping with his sexuality. And bravo for Ryan to really make this his first role as an actor.
I read somewhere that his parents were the ones who got hid fanmail and helped him to respond. When they saw how many people who said he saved their life, they became supportive. OLTL was the show that always went their.
I'm crying. Where was this in the early 2000s? I never saw a role model lesbian to look up to and only knew of negative stereotypes. Whenever there was a tomboy character that I identified with, they would always put her in a dress as some sort of awakening moment of "oh my god, i'm beautiful." As an extremely masculine lesbian, that made me feel so alienated, so wrong. Like I wasn't being a woman correctly. I hated myself for so many years and only this year have I started to truly accept myself. I wish I had done it sooner-- that feeling he talkes about holding your breath for so long... oof he hit the nail right on the head. I'm not old enough to have seen this show before but I am very impressed and SO happy to know that this probably helped countless gay people feel more normal and gave them courage to love themselves. Absolutely empowering and amazing
Absolutely. It remains the most outstanding storyline ever done on soaps in my opinion. Several years later "ALL MY CHILDREN" had a storyline about a gay high school teacher that was also very good. Up to the point where OLTL did this storyline gay storylines were the last absolute taboo of soap operas.
It's so rare to see any scene from almost 30 years ago hold up, let alone a scene about an LGBTQ character. The writing here was top notch, and so was the acting.
It was an amazing storyline. Just a side note, none of these young actors got recognition from the DAYTIME EMMYS that year for outstanding younger actor/actress. I remember thinking what a snub that was. I was a big DAYTIME EMMYS fan due to Susan Lucci's ongoing losing streak.
I remember watching this when it aired (I was in my late teens) and being only mildly surprised by this storyline. But my mom saw it as some sort of break through. I didn't really understand the forced closeting of gays and gay issues in society at the time and to think that it's still an issue today. unbelievable.
You must have been from a different area/world than me because this was groundbreaking and shocking to me. My closeted gay high school self went to a room during summer vacation and watched riveted an actual positive portrayal of a relatively normal gay teen going through hardships and having the same thoughts I was having
Marty apparently likes to spy on people. When you have to tell a secret and Marty was around, make sure she really leaves. Also, it can lead to misunderstandings.
I don’t know what I’m watching (fell into one of those TH-cam black holes) but I happened to be reading your comment RIGHT as she was opening the door to eavesdrop.
Homophobia in the 90s was INSANE and in the 80s SUPERINSANE and in the 70s gays were beaten, tortured, sent to prison or killed in the US and pretty much all over the world... Need I say more?
I was the same way coming out at 27. Came out to my AA sponsor and couldn't stop talking about myself. Remembering how all I wanted to do was let him know who I am on the other side of the closet and that feeling of being able to breathe afterward. Unfortunately my closet had allot garbage in it that later came down on me. So be careful.
I was so mistreated as a gay teen in the 70s/ 80s, that the ensuing emotional damage suppressed my innate potential to the point of lifelong emotional disability.
I haven't watched this clip yet but Marty was suspicious that Billy was gay and she kind of used it as an upper hand...I remember her saying to him: "So who was the lucky guy?" when she was grilling him for information.
I watch OLTL all the time and also being gay and out since 15 seeing this in 1992 whem was 21 was great and by then being in a relationship was wonderful. What was Marty doing there and hat had happened to her why she was distraught? The rape happened long after that so if anyone remembers what whas happening with her at the time?
@entertainme3000 And if you quit watching the show, why are you commenting on this site? Stop trying to spread hate and prejudice-it's quite un-Christian. Shame on you if you claim to be Christian and spew this filth.
@2:38 [Billy talking about himself being gay] quote: " I'd be like "Billy you got to be gay man" but then i didn't have anybody to compare myself to and in the movies or on TV people who were gay were always girly boys or child molesters or psycho killers and I'd say I'm not like that so maybe I'm really not maybe I'm really not. " - - - - - [notice that in One Life to Live Billy is a cool teen, popular and full of charisma, and he comes out. That was in the 90s right after the long hair for males went out of fashion, and right before the LGBTQ+ movements. That was and still is a rare glimpse across national media, of a popular youth rejecting the common sexual mores, but also not identifying with the identities media is educating him that defines gay, ". . . girly boys or child molesters or psycho killers . . ." now that the biggest financier of LGBTQ+ rights movements are big money enterprises and corporations, folks in the similar boat, and being required to call themselves "queer" for example, if invited to speak about civil rights on news networks, or the plethora of examples where 50 year old civil rights guests are required to dress in drag with heavy cosmetics and costume jewellery to speak their mind, and reminded they have to mention they "identify as queer". The world's cultural authorities gave up on outlawing homosexuality (remember Alan Touring, prosecuted WW2 hero?), but only because it was a miserable failure that galvanized justice seekers everywhere. Today they're controlling LGBTQ+ talking points across all media, with big money, putting in their people as presidents of HRC etc, and making sure all the major movement leaders are in their back pocket. And then there intention is to garner pitty from the liberal segment of the public, while energizing conservatives stand fast and strong against the movements. Today and we can imagine many Billys hidden away in their homes and isolated within schools, looking at all the LGBTQ+ media, and saying the exact something similar, asking if he was LGBTQ+: "I'd be like "Billy you got to be LGBTQ+ man" but then i didn't have anybody to compare myself to and in the movies or on TV people who were gay were always old queens in heavy makeup or child molesters or young dying drug addicts, and I'd say I'm not like that so maybe I'm really not maybe I'm really not. @entertainme3000 gimme a break its 2012 get over it. and why r u watching soaps if u don't like infidelity and the sex and outrageous storylines?!?! Go watch antique roadshow or somethin
@Lisa4174 what about don't ask don't tell? Why does every gay guy think the world needs to know who he is? Maybe others just don't care and the only person bothered by it is themselves.
and why do YOU have to let the world know who YOU are? We ALL need to be accepted and live our authentic lives. We all have to 'live and let live' about others' lives whether you find it agreeable or not. YOU are EXACTLY the reason why there is a need for PRIDE month every June.
I don't believe they should be put to death. And they should be treated equal. I'm just saying there's a time and place for that. They can't be openly sexual in public. Like straights, gays have follow a law too. We can't bend any rules for ppl just because their gay just to prove we're not "prejudice" as you put it. And why did you say "Sniff?" you don't have to use a vulgar term like that. Like I said, ppl don't care about what gay guys do, the gays make an issue out of it.
@thrashdouche21 I have a sex life thank you very much. And I'm not against gays but I think OLTL wanted to rile some ppl up when they played that story back in 2010. Which is exactly what they did. They need not've showed them in bed together though. Some 10 year olds watch this stuff with their parents. How does a parent explain that? And I also think infidelity is disgusting too. And straight couples having sex on here constantly is annoying enough. So please go spit your venom at someone else

I absolutely had the same experience with this storyline as well. I will never forget it and it changed my life as well.

I vaguely remember this... I'm doing 5th grade homework at the dining room table and my mom is absolutely glued to the TV watching this.

This aired the year I was born and it is still the best and most accurate depiction of coming out for the average American that I have ever seen.
Same
He really is/was so talented to deliver a script like this...I'm impressed.
I agree. He is amazing.
great scene, thanks for posting, one of the reasons why this year was one of the best years this soap ever had!

Billy was so sweet. I remember these episodes.
this needs to be restored digitally
I doubt the original still exists
How did Ryan not get a daytime Emmy nomination for this storyline?
Probably cause they dont want to admit they made a mistake in the old days and this storyline was done beautifully
yea i was his age going through the same thing when this aired. i'll never forget it. now i'm older and i relate to Kish.

Billy's father was a creep
But does anyone know why Marty was crying or what she felt like she had to tell Andrew? I haven't watch the serie
I haven't watched this clip yet but Marty was suspicious that Billy was gay and she kind of used it as an upper hand...I remember her saying to him: "So who was the lucky guy?" when she was grilling him for information.

oh relax. You get too upset!
I wish I could come out and be free.;but I can't be gay I'm a Christian. My mother would disapprove of having with a man.
Tyrese Holloway Well... this is America. You have every right to be who you want to be, happy. Do what makes you happy.
The nerve of some women… why do some distort the truth to gain attention?
@vike554572229 that's very inappropriate.
@entertainme3000 oh yeah many grandmothers getting off on ppl having affairs and fornicating!
haha my family and friends are gonna die haha I wonder how that's gonna happen. Their still here.

@entertainme3000 im sorry i really dont watch OLTL! but yeah i think its vulgar too much sex on daytime tv
@talkingducksrgreat I hated the Oliver and Kyle story. OLTL just wanted to show two men having sex, which was disgusting and distasteful.
@lightandbeautiful YUCK!
@thrashdouche21 I have a sex life thank you very much. And I'm not against gays but I think OLTL wanted to rile some ppl up when they played that story back in 2010. Which is exactly what they did.
