The Art Of Crate Digging | Collecting Vinyl Records 101

  • Crate digging is an art unto itself. To me, flipping through dusty record bins is a treasure hunt for something personally meaningful. The record store is the dig site, the records are the artifacts that tell the story. Expressed in basic terms it is musical archeology, cultural anthropology. The ritual of the dig is both necessary and primordial. The dig for your holy grail record just doesn't work if you buy if online; the only way to earn that badge is by getting your fingers dirty. A bit of knowledge and practice can help; patience and an eye for certain details will also go a long way towards helping you dig out your next favorite album. Here are a few personal tips.

    I just started getting into the vinyl wave, bought myself a fluance RT-81 player, and I started my collection, I went to an estate sale and found 3 records in mint condition including the cover art and stuff inside....they were going for $1.00 each, and went home and did research and the records were going for between $35 and $50. What a score!!! This is going to get addicting I can tell!!

    I remember a number of years ago you mentioned my favourite label Analog Africa in one of your videos. If anyone is looking for great starters on African/Tropical music, the music is brilliant, artwork stunning and sleeve notes are comprehensive. Every. Single. Time. Other good labels are Teranga Beat and World Circuit. Cheers for the great content!

    I have been trying to go digging in new places more often. Soemtimes you can find some real gems in pawn shops, antique stores, and other stores like that. I recently found an original US pressing of Dire Straits - Communique in a pawn shop for $3 CAD (it's actually a promo copy) and it was a bit dirty but no scratches. One time through the Okki Nokki and it came out looking new. Not only does it look great, but the sound is truly incredible.

    I hate it when record stores or flea market sellers don't categorize their records. Everything mixed in together? Crazy! Very frustrating. Please separate your stash by genre.

    I am a beginner and I did both, online and crate digging. On the flea market here in Salzburg and in Vienna I found great stuff, but also on Discogs and ebay. My experience with record shops was not that great so far. Mostly to expensive and not a great selection, maybe that's just here in Austria, I prefer online and flea market.

    The record store that I go to will wrap the ones that are worth anything....but they will open it up in front of you to inspect it if you so desire...so i am fine with that!

    I had as much problems with new records as I had with used. The used ones I can check before buying and they are often better in sound. One example, in a restaurant I pay the same money for my Pizza every time I order one, so I demand the same quality. The day the restaurant owner says to me "hey today our Pizza turned out not so good, I give you a discount" I will change this.

    The low price on discogs is usually stuff sold in poor condition.
    Actually the low med high prices on discogs don't give an indication on condition.

    • @VinylJunkies666
      @VinylJunkies666  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing gives indication on condition, other than actually seeing it for yourself.

      Vinyl Junkies
      What I mean is, the low price could be due to a copy being sold without the jacket "record only" or just a copy in fair condition that somebody maybe bought to frame etc.
      The high price is most likely a mint copy maybe sealed, sold at a time when maybe there wasn't many others available for sale.
      Hence the big difference in price from low to high.

    • @VinylJunkies666
      @VinylJunkies666  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're definitely right about that, nor can it be discounted. But a lot of the time, it's clearly just plain greed, capitalism at work.
