It's amazing that there is still such a vibrant blue color to that crab claw .its been encased in stone for millions of years. Cant wait 2 c the rest of it .

Many fond memories of spending hours cracking stones, finding fossilized shells, etc. Watching you reminds me of those days, and since we can't go anywhere now, it's just great to watch you wander around doing your passion.

I suppose the dominant predators / scavengers in that area were crabs as opposed to some other kind of animal. There are usually way more whale bones so might have just been in a strange area 😁
You and me both! I have a definite crayfish I must still prep, doing a prep tomorrow of some cretaceous bone I found for the next video. Maybe a crayfish palate cleanser after that 😄

Before watching the rest of the video. It's a cow shark, also known as a broad nose sevengill. They usually have spots though, so I'll confirm it's not a sixgill. They have been around for super long and are widely represented in the fossil record
Great finds! very excited to see how the claw will turn out, or the crab the colour on that one looks quite special. As for the shark, the teeth kinda remind me of the teeth from a six or seven-gill shark but I could be totally wrong as I can't see it clearly enough. I do own a few shark yaws if your interested I'll trade you one for a small crab. =P
@@MamlamboFossils I had another look, it's not the bone that connects directly to the scapula, but it is part of the forelimb (we get a lot of dead seals on the beech)

Thanks Robert! I wish that glue would harden quicker :D I was tempted to hide the shark somewhere and come back in a few months for those jaws. I thought it could have been a bronze whaler shark, but I'm not great at IDing sharks that aren't Great Whites :D Hope you get out soon!
good things come to those who wait as the glue has to harden but will be worth the wait :0) I had a look at tiger shark and its is out as the teeth are wrong, I had a look at the bronze whaler, copper, shark and the teeth don't have cusps at 3.06 you can see at least 2-3 cusps each side of the tooth and I think it could be a tope shark as I had a look at their teeth and they are quite similar :0) I know it sounds mean but you could have cut the head off, after a few months very little will be left but you could taxidermy the head or if it's too far gone just keep the jaws :0) me neither mate but google is good for finding things especially sharks :0) I hope so too and will get some pix but it could be weeks or months but at least it's something to look forward to :0) have a great day and on to the next adventure mate :0)
this might be a dumb question, but how do these animals end up encased? do you think they were alive and then caught in an avalanche of mud or something? or were they dead and gradually covered in sediment that hardened? for the condition that they are in, it would seem like a sudden event allowing them to be preserved in good shape. what do you think?
These crabs live in mud / sediment from what I know. Perhaps some event caused many of them to be buried? New Zealand has many earthquakes so it is conceivable that a large earthquake caused a mudslide that buried a few million crabs. Otherwise, if I crab died, it would probably have been scavenged by other crabs and animals.

Would love to find some crabs, are you aware of any spots in Auckland you can find them, also I have a question about why you don’t remove all the rock when you are chipping at a crab, I can only think that it would get too Fidly after a while and may break off the legs and claws, I’ve left a subscribe and will binge watch some of your videos soon, would you or have you made a video of how to identify fossil rocks for “noobies” in New Zealand, thank you very much and awesome channel 👍

@@MamlamboFossils I'm a uber driver and one guy Told. Me about 40 miles where I live in the silicon valley theres many many megalodon tooth found. He also states that he was working on a site in LA downtown where whale bones was found he said about 7million years ago la was underwater

Yeah it is, it just takes much longer and leaves the fragile very fragile. My preference is to keep some rock to provide strength and also I like the way it looks.

It kinda looks like a cow shark Notorynchus cependianus possibly? They do live in the waters around New Zealand, and they are the only shark with multi cusped teeth like that, that would look like that shark. I could be wrong though, at the angle on the video I can't make out the bottom teeth too well, and I'm no marine biologist just a student paleontologists.

Nice finds! Being from Iowa, I know nothing about sharks but am fascinated with them. It looks like some kind of thresher shark because of its tail.

9:45 that looks like the bone that connects to the scapula of a seal. (There might be a more technical term for it)
I think you're right, I googled it and came up with seal forelimb bone. Not sure the exact name of it 😄

Hi JoAnn, they are concretions, like a natural cement forming around the fossils. I'm not sure of the exact process by which they are forming.

The shark is quite confusing the teeth look like cow shark six gill shark or Greenland shark but the shape of body is more like that off a mako shark

Mamlambo no it seems the teeth of the bronze whaler don’t have barbs on them in the video you can clearly see that the teeth of this shark have barbs
