Ngl, I wasn't paying attention when Stark put the tesseract into the suit, so I was proper confused when Skull had it again.

Peggy was a highly trained agent/spy and at full strength, whereas Steve was 90 pounds and had a laundry list of health issues. He could barely do a push-up before he got the serum, so it makes sense that Peggy would be a stronger super-soldier.
And Hydra took the Tesseract from the suit when they captured Steve. Howard Stark was able to make it the power source because the SSR got the Tesseract so early in the war.
Also, congrats! I'm happy for you, man.
what's also interesting is it looks like the power coupling the suit is hooked up to in the hydra castle looks like a prototype arc reactor of some kind, which explains why it powered the suit and for only a short time. Guess with the switched Tesseract the power sources for both sides switched as well due to the needs.

Erskine’s serum re-writes the users dna to human perfection and pushes them to the peak of human potential. Everyone has the same end point regardless of where you start physically. This is just what a Erskine super solider looks like when it’s not live action as she’s doing the same type of feats Cap does in the comics.
The issue with Steve being the Winter Soldier instead of Bucky is that when Steve saved Bucky in the movie he had already been experimented on which is how he survived the floor where as Steve never had that in this. Also I think there will be a trend in the episodes where some of the prominent characters will be chosen for a crossover series given the fact that Uatu mentioned Peggy was a new hero for the multiverse….
There's also the fact that Zola was already captured
steve wouldn’t ever fall so he wouldn’t never need zola’s experimentation
And Steve had the suit on to survive, so it all works out.
Also in this episode I don’t think Bucky had been experimented on yet so if Bucky fell he would’ve just died.

I think she actually might be stronger than Steve tbh. Since she was already both exceptionally trained in hand to hand combat, AND was in perfect health before the serum (unlike Steve.) Steve was just the best man that a man can be at heart. The fact that he even holds a candle to any other super soldier is both a miracle, and also probably due to the fact that the original serum seemed to beef people up way more than any other iteration afterwards did.
technically, with her smaller frame she got a proportionally higher dose of both the serum and the vita rays too.

I thought I missed something with the Tesseract suddenly being back with Hydra too, but it was because it was inside Steve's Iron Man suit, which they recovered. It wasn't made entirely clear that it was inside the suit to begin with.
it was pretty heavily hinted at, it went from Stark saying he knew exactly what to do with it, to showing him working on something huge that was obscured and asking Steve if he was ready to join the war effort. Then he shows up in the suit in the rescue scene and the color/energy from the suit being the same color as the tesseract
Yes. It powered the hydra stomper. Remember Howard telling tony in the film that he was limited by the technology of his time? Well the allies having control of the teseract kinda helped him out a bit…
Yeah the Tesseract had to be in the suit because there was no way Stark could have made an Ironman suit, let alone one that powerful in the 40s.

Small correction, A.C. Bradley is a woman (She's the showrunner for Trollhunters and 3Below), The Watcher here is Uatu (Ooo-Aut-too), his race was in GOTG2, but this is first MCU appearance, and there are 9 episodes.
It might just be animation just making her actions more dynamic, but Peggy was already trained and in better shape, plus a good person, so wham, Peggy is a One Woman Army.
The artstyle your describing is "Cell Shaded", it adds a flair to a CG render that probably would need it.
The team confirmed we're getting more Captain Carter episodes in the future seasons, and maybe appearances in live action, but hey, "Who's to say?"

I know you've mentioned before that Avatar the Last Airbender is on your list but if Jen is interested in getting into an animated show, THAT is the show to get into. Its pretty much universally loved and hailed as one of the, if not, the greatest animated shows of all time. I think both of yall will REALLY love it.

If you guys like Peggy, I recommend watching Agent Carter. While Marvel Studios are ignoring the previous shows, they are all technically still canon. AC is only 18 episodes long in total.
Agent Carter was an excellent series say somehow got to bring her back and do another one live action
They are not all still canon, Agent Carter is but the Netflix shows and AoS are definitely not.

@@tomn6800 Canon means it is definitively set in stone, that *is* what happened. They have made it clear nothing that happened in those shows is set in stone, and they can change anything and everything whenever they want.
By the very definition of what canon is, those shows are unquestionably not.
At any given time some events and series could be safe to assume is what happened, but that could change any time.
I don't even know you two in real life, but hearing that you're engaged now makes me so happy for you! I've been enjoying watching your journey through Star Wars, Marvel, and other movies and shows, and I love your discussions.
I know Jen really liked Peggy in the MCU, so I was excited to see her reactions to Captain Carter, but I think she would also really enjoy the Agent Carter show, and I would love to see a reaction to that show if it was something you wanted to do!

I like watching Holden's initial reaction to new things now. It's like we are all catching up together. P.S. Congrats on the engagement! May God Bless you and Jen's journey together.
WIth Peggy, I like the idea that since she was stronger and trained before taking the serum, that she's even more capable right at the jump, whereas it took Cap years to get to where he was in Endgame.
Her physical condition prior would have no effect since the serum re-writes the users dna and pushed them to the same peak.
Erskine’s serum also gives the user enhanced senses and augments their brain functions. Thus, Steve can learn and master any fighting style or weapon in moments (see Mjolnir). So, any skill Peggy has would be irrelevant. Her performance in the animation is the same as Cap in the comics.
But it makes sense that it took Cap time to adjust. As in the first avenger when he was running and couldn't control his momentum and crashed into the shop.

Second of all, to Jen, congrats on making it all the way to Phase 4 and beyond. Now, you're truly one of us.
I think the train scene with Steve was just a bit of the good old Marvel subversion of expectations, as opposed to the episode length. By definition, every episode is going to cover variations of something we’ve already seen before, so I think the quick recap and the fast pace is a good idea so that it never feels like a tedious rehash.
I really love the art style of this episode.

Edit: I enjoyed this first ep more than I thought I would, but I felt like it could have been a little longer. Some scenes felt a little rushed to me, especially there at the end. And I was also hoping for Steve as the Winter Soldier, that would have been really interesting!

- Marvel's Agents of Shield (technically not cannon, but still has some cool stuff with some connections to the MCU like the kraken in this episode)
- Avatar The Last Airbender (great story, great visuals and also some great character development)
- Chuck (a little bit more casual then most MCU stuff, but still very fun to watch. With loads of action, but also moments of awkwardness and romance)

I was confused too as to how Hydra got the Tesseract back. Because they have only 30 minutes to tell a two hour story, many plot points were rushed. But to answer your question Stark put the Tesseract into the Hydra Stomper to power it. When the train exploded hydra must have come back later to check the wreckage and grabbed the suit and took the Tesseract from it.
The Tesseract was in the Hydra Stomper, its what was powering it. They showed that when Howard was building it.
In case you were still wondering--the Tesseract was what was powering Steve's suit, potentially making it the most powerful Iron Man-type armor seen onscreen! So when Steve was captured, that's how Red Skull got it back.
Not the most powerful, but woth unlimited energy, which means can fight indefinitely
I think the episodes needed to be longer to flesh things out. I also think everybody thought Steve was gonna be Winter Soldier after the train sequence. I thought that, too, and seen tons of comments elsewhere. I also like the fact that it isn't really "What if Peggy Carter took the Super Soldier Serum" but rather "What if Peggy Carter stayed downstairs" and how drastically that changed things. But I really liked this first episode and hear it's actually the weakest. So I'm excited to see where it goes from here.

I would have thought putting Steve in the chamber would have made more sense. He was injured not dead. It could have healed him and if not then there wasnt much risk. Oh well kind of lazy writing to me.

@@Firefly139 It doesn't completely reset your skillset. Steve was going in having only ever lost fist-fights and Peggy was going in as a competent fighter. She had a massive advantage to begin with

That’s part of the serums benefits; they don’t have to think about how to throw the shield, or where to hit someone, they just know instinctively. ...so exactly what advantage would Peggy have? I didn’t say her previous skill set would be reset, I said it would be irrelevant, because it would be.
Peggy in the animation was performing at the same level as Steve has done for decades in the comics.

The Erskine quote is “The serum amplifies everything that is inside so, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse.” Implication being that a good person with power is capable of great things, and a bad person with power is capable of worse....he literally even says it’s about “the man” - who you are in your heart...which was also the entire subplot in F&TWS; “Power...just makes a person more themselves, right?” It never meant if you could draw, now you can draw better.
And no, the serum doesn’t make them gods, it makes them superhuman. Genetic perfection pushed to the absolute peak of human potential and the next step in evolution. Their on a whole different playing field, with entirely different rules.

What you missed about the Tesseract Holden, was that it was powering Steve's Hydra-Stomper Armour. When he was "lost" in the train explosion trap, Red Skull recovered the Tesseract with Steve from the wreckage.

@@CrossOutBryce So far it seems like one of the two will be in that movie. Scott Derrickson who left as director wanted to use Nightmare, but the script was rewritten by Michael Waldron (Loki Head Writer), so could well be Shuma Gorath.

I agree that Steve as the Winter Soldier is a super interesting What If inversion, but I think it doesn't work here not just because of time constraints (though that too) but also because this is Peggy's "What If" and it robs us of the more relevant inversion of the plane/portal sacrifice at the end. What I do like about the train scene is that in mirroring the scene from the movie it highlights the importance of the Steve/Bucky relationship in retrospect (as you can see in Jen's reaction here).

Hi Holden and Jen, first of all, congratulations on your engagement!!! Peggy was a trained agent and/or soldier, Steve was at the beginning of his training... Maybe that is why she already was at the same point as Steve on The Winter Soldier...but with the animation, she definitely looked stronger... I think. Love all your videos, keep the Great Work!!! .
As for having a problem with Steve being on the floor.... He was chained to the floor in The dungeon of the ancient castle they were in. This was a common way of keeping prisoners in castle dungeons. It kept them uncomfortable with nothing to lean against just stuck sitting up or laying on the ground. Also they weren't worried about a crippled 90lb asthmatic escaping.
Love the animation style. Very Fleischer-esque ,even the score. Great use of shadows and lighting. And the action choreography was brilliantly done.
I definitely believe Peggy is stronger than Steve in this universe due to her already being in the military and having all that training. The serum just boosted that and made her more of who she already is.

BTW, It was pointed out in a TV forum I help moderate that the Red Skull got the tesseract back because Howard Stark used it to power the Hydra Smasher armour, in place of the arc reactor Tony used in the main timeline.

I think the power "disparity" is because (just an opinion) the serum maybe had to compensate for all of "little" Steve's disabilities as well as making him stronger plus Steve had to be trained in combat, grow into and realize his strengths in a new body (in many aspects) whereas Peggy already had the combat training, the mental and physical training of a soldier, 'normal' height and physical attributes, and didn't (on record) have any disabilities ie; asthma, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, sinusitis, heart palpitations, nervous trouble, bone/joint/other deformitysc (canonically) like Steve had.
By the way, they got the tesseract back because it was in Steve's suit. That's why he needed to charge up afterward, he had no power source.

This is canon in my mind for two reasons : What If? was a comic book anthology first in 1977 delving into the same situations as this series seems to be following. The second reason is that it may follow the Marvel movies in the same order (sort of).
I know it’s not mentioned in the episode, but the teseract was in the iron man suit that Steve was in. That’s how red skull got the teseract back since you were wondering that

When I watched I fully thought Steve Winter Soldier too, and it would have been so amazing. Imagine instead of finding out your best friend is still alive all these years later, you find out your love is alive and you have to fight them/turn them good. Would have been so good.
