- Ke-Meh-Ha Festival Celebrated with Grandeur in Arunachal Pradesh: AAPSU and KSU Leaders Unite to Advocate for Indigenous Rights
Anini, Arunachal Pradesh: The Ke-Meh-Ha festival, an annual celebration of the Idu-Mishmi community, was held with great enthusiasm in Anini, Dibang Valley district, on September 24th last. The festival, which marks the ingestion of newly harvested rice, holds deep cultural significance for the Idu-Mishmi people as a ritual to appease the goddess of prosperity. This year’s celebration was particularly noteworthy due to its emphasis on the theme of a “Drug-Free Society,” organized by the Dibang Valley District Students Union (DVDSU).
Gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest was All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) President, Mr. Dozi Tana Tara. Joining him as the Guest of Honour was Khasi Students Union (KSU) President, Mr. Lambok Marngar, along with a delegation of KSU executives from Meghalaya. Their presence symbolized the growing unity between Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, with a shared focus on protecting indigenous rights.
In his speech, Mr. Lambok Marngar touched upon a pressing concern for both states: the influx of illegal immigrants. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the indigenous lands, highlighting that illegal immigration is a common challenge threatening the security and identity of both Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
“The indigenous land must be protected, and we need to be vigilant against external threats. We face a common issue, and it is time for the indigenous communities to stand united,” stated Mr. Lambok.
The festival featured vibrant cultural performances, showcasing the rich traditions of the Idu-Mishmi people, including traditional songs, dances, and rituals. The attendees were also reminded of the significance of the festival, which symbolizes gratitude for a successful harvest and the blessings of prosperity.
The event, which strengthened bonds between the two northeastern states, concluded on a successful note, with calls for continued unity and cultural preservation. The Ke-Meh-Ha festival remains an important pillar of the Idu-Mishmi identity and a testament to the community’s deep connection to their land and heritage.
The Ke-Meh-Ha festival not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Idu-Mishmi community but also underscored the strengthening ties between the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) and the Khasi Students Union (KSU). The participation of KSU President Mr. Lambok Marngar and his delegation highlighted the growing solidarity between the indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
Both AAPSU and KSU leaders reiterated their commitment to protecting indigenous rights and addressing shared challenges such as the influx of illegal immigrants. Their joint appearance at the festival symbolized a deepening bond between the two student unions, as they emphasized the need for unity among indigenous groups across the northeastern region.
As the event concluded, it became clear that the Ke-Meh-Ha festival had not only preserved cultural traditions but also fostered a stronger alliance between AAPSU and KSU. This partnership is poised to be a powerful force in advocating for the protection of indigenous lands, culture, and identity in the face of modern challenges.

More efforts are needed to preserve and promote the rich culture of various indigenous tribals of NE and other regions of India.
