I was fortunate enough to be friends with Darlene Cates, who played Mama, back in the late 1990’s/ early 2000’s. She was an absolutely wonderful soul. A very sweet lady who valued her family above all. RIP Darlene.
That is so beautiful. I heard that she was the heart and soul of the production, she really helped both Johnny and Leo. She was so good in this film. I’m so glad you were friends with her.
I remember being absolutely disgusted by her when this movie came out. I was also a child at the time and didn't understand. I watch this movie beginning to end a few years ago as an almost 40 year old man and dang I misjudged her when I had child eyes. I was so saddened to hear of her passing and I hope you've be able to find some comfort for the loss.of.your friend
It's incredible this was her first acting role. Everything felt completely grounded and real in this movie including her, even in the more intense or emotional scenes. IMO she, Depp and DiCaprio are all tied for best acting in the film. (I like Lewis great too, but her character is a little more Pixie Dream Girl.)
My mother and her became pen pals. She unfortunately had a weight problem as well ( thesteroids didn't help her any) and Darlene wrote her many emails. I only found out after my mother passed in 2007 while looking through her computer for photo's and documents to remember her. I love knowing my mom had such a supportive friend in her final years... being bed ridden, she felt so isolated. I know it must have meant a lot to her.
@@Blueberry_Jelly17 that is lovely! And sounds like something Darlene would do. She genuinely cares about people. I’m glad your mom had her friendship.
It's absolutely insane how talented DiCaprio was THIS EARLY in his career. I'd actually argue that he was a lot more dimensional here than in a lot of his later films.
Yes! He was 'for real' here whereas later on his movies just became second to his serial 'side projects'. Depp's fantastic as well you really feel the pressure he's under.
1979 Breaking Away has super believable characters going through early adult responsibilities. Script is like a slice of 1979, Almost like you have already met them IRL-type characters, and includes, a tense race scene too!
Clearly a movie moment of fiction but burning down the house to spare their mom that final embarrassment of a crane having to haul her out showed how much they truly loved her and pushed them to move on. Great reaction.
hey J! I'm in this movie 🙂 Tenor sax in the band. Funny story ... we were the elite 1st chair Jazz / ensemble band in my home town Manor, TX. The director told us we played "This Magic Moment" too well, and so we de-tuned and missed notes on purpose to make it sound worse 😄
I read once that Johnny Depp felt really bad while filming this movie because he had to say horrible thing about the actress who played momma and her weight in the movie, apparently she was one of the nicest people you could ever meet
Trivia: Darlene Cates, who played the overweight mom. She was discovered when she was a guest on The Sally Jessy Raphael Show. Rest is movie history. RIP Darlene Cates.
The fact Leo didn’t win the Oscar is the biggest snub in history. Fun fact: when he went to the premier, there were people there who were surprised to know he wasn’t in fact mentally challenged.
I think Leo deserves an Oscar for pretty much every movie he has ever been in, He is so good at every character he has ever played I can't think of one movie he's in that didn't make me feel something..great reaction as always..
people often talk about movies that ruined them in their childhood. Bambie's mom, Mufasa, etc. This movie shattered me when I was a child. and it still does to this day
Caretaker depression is real, and Gilbert felt it tenfold. Beautiful reaction to a movie I've watched several times. I even read the novel after the movie came out because I was so taken by the story. Thank you for your honest heartfelt take on a movie that seems forgotten. ❤❤
Hey J. , Thank you so much for this reaction . For me this movie is far underrated and everyone should see this movie. It is not filled with explosions , weather disasters , or serial killers. This movie is filled with mental health issues, physical heath issues, and societal issues. It is about everything important about being human , having empathy , respect and lack there of . This hits home for so many people on many different levels and I do not believe my adolescent self would have survived the same without "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" . I might not ever meet Leo, Juliet , or Johnny but they through this movie helped me more than they will ever know.... this movie is a classic.
This movie portrays so many of our families that have so many pressures. Father figure being deceased, mother couldn't cope without him, and all the pressures being a mother of so many kids, with one being a special needs person. Oldest teen son feels obligated to take on ALL the responsibilities of keeping the entire family afloat. He truly loves his brother with special needs, that requires so much of his time, and attention. Being just barely older than his brother, he also has the pressures of his own needs, and desires. The truly saving grace for not only Gilbert, but his brother Arnie is his new girlfriend Becky, who is a truly understanding, and loving soul. It is so hard to watch that their mother makes the choice she does to finally lay down in a bed, knowing she couldn't breathe in that position...thinking her passing would ease her kids pain, embarrassment, and their mental anguish is so sad. The fact that they burned the house to bury her to prevent her being a spectacle for the nosey, and cruel townsfolk that saw her as a joke; is something that is just indescribable in it's emotional impact. THIS FILM is aptly named, yet it really shouldn't be "Whats eating Gilber Grape", I think it would be even more aptly named "What isn't eating Gilbert Grape" as JL said he had SO MUCH on his plate. What phenomenal mental strength he had. At least in the end all the kids apparently had a place/situations to move forward into, and best of all Gilbert, and Arnie BOTH went with Becky, and it appears they will be OK going forward. SO many emotions touched me by this film. Johnny Depp, Leo Dicaprio, and many of the cast members did a fantastic job. Great reactions JL....loved it. Great job as always JL, and Blank...great edit as well my man. BRIAN
OMG!!! One of my most favorite movies!!!! Thank you so much for reacting to this beautiful movie!!!! Leo was given full reign on his character. Both Leo & Johnny’s performances are immaculate
Such an amazing, heart-warming, and heart-breaking film. Brilliant writing, and an absolutely stellar cast, especially Deep and DiCaprio. It's some of their best work (DiCaprio in particular...dude should've got an Oscar for this). Edit: Apparently that last point is a popular one.
My late Uncle Eddie was oxygen deprived at birth. He was a lot like Arnie. At my mom's funeral be pointed to her casket while I was talking to him and said "There's Carol!" He was such a sweet person
Loved the reaction. This was the first movie that made me cry when I was a kid. My mom thought there might be something wrong with me since I didn't cry watching Bambi, but it was just...my mom isn't a doe. My mom was however, fairly overweight (though not obese), and I had a severely retarded uncle that I had to help care for after school, so I was able to connect with these characters a lot more.
No one talks about how good this movie actually is, at least in today's world. This is definitely my favorite role with Leo. Juliette Lewis and Johnny Depp were great, too.
No, but theyll go on and on about shallow cgi superhero tripe. I mean thats fine to enjoy those things, but its a shame how thats all but dominated hollywood for over a decade. They dont make em like this anymore

You are so right when you said 'He probably needed that hug more than anything!'. I watched this film a few months ago when my mom was dying in the hospital. I would work from home on days and would spend every night in the waiting area outside ICU, mostly scrolling thr phone to distract myself. Days in and days out! I didn't have anyone to tell how I felt. In those many days I could so much relate with this character. Sometimes really all you need is a hug!
This film reminds me so much of home that it hurts. I sincerely love how you don't pull any emotional punches in this and just let everyone see how it makes you feel. You're a good man, Jay!
There's nothing like Juliette Lewis in the 90s. She kills in everything she's in. Pretty much all the early Depp and Dicaprio stuff is great as well. This one is a hard watch for me, hits real close to home, but it's a top-tier film. They don't make stuff like this anymore and it's a crime. If you haven't seen it, another great Jonny Depp film that seems to get overlooked from the same era is Benny & Joon. It's a nice bit of Depp being a weirdo before Fear & Loathing/Pirates seem to have stuck him into Ultra Weirdo mode. Another 90s classic for sure.
I goddamn love this movie and I love your reaction. I feel like not many people watch this movie now, because it's not one of those big mainstream 90's movies everybody knows about.
I've been in love with this movie since I first saw it.. ❤ many years later when I saw "Tropic Thunder" and those words "You went full retard, you NEVER go full retard" fell from Robert Downey Jrs lips, this movie came to mind.. for fear of offending I won't go any further into that brain thought but you get where I'm going with that.. because Leo DID and it is such a testament to his acting chops because of how convincingly and immersive he played the role that you could not differentiate.. and at such a young age.. just WOW.. @JL Yup another classic gem and a lovely showcase at the only thing that matters and the one thing we all need...LOVE. Much appreciation to the EOM staff and the amazing patreons.
It's not just the acting and the themes of dysfunctional families, fat shaming, and "small town" commentary that make me feel for this film, but the gorgeous cinematography is incredible. I love the shots in this deep movie.
I have been waiting for this with anticipation ❤❤❤ this is one of my favorites ❤❤it tears my heart out but I can't not watch it ❤❤❤I can't wait to see J's reaction❤❤❤
It’s a great movie. I think people should know that the book doesn’t have the happy ending the movie has though. The scene where Gilbert leaves Endora with Becky a year later was added for the movie. That’s not saying it didn’t happen though.
This movie hits so hard with me. I have a son who’s autistic, and although he’s high functioning he has still had his moments for the worst over the past few years and I just thank God that he’s still here and has a village and his dad who cares for him. Leo and Johnny did an amazing job in their roles. The part with Arnie in the tub just killed me. I was mad at his mother because she was at home and couldn’t even get her kid out of the tub and she blamed Gilbert for it! And the wife he was messing with was straight up OC! And when they arrested Arnie she then decided to go and take care of her kid! 🤦🏾♀️ Then when Gilbert hit Arnie! 😩 Leo was also in a film called “Basketball Diaries”. I think you’d like it.
Damn.... I'm 40 yrs old and I remember back when this came out and was on HBO several times over and over. Haven't seen it since the 90s.... Until now.
I forgot Crispin Glover was in this. Reminds me, you should really watch “River’s Edge”, with him and Keanu Reeves. A creepy movie based on a true story.
If you want to check out another Juliette Lewis movie, I would highly recommend "The Other Sister." It's such a beautiful story, with so many emotions. It's funny, it's sad, it's heartwarming, and so inspiring too. Juliette, as well as her co-stars acted their arses off. In my opinion, she should have won an oscar that year. I think you'd really love it.
Dude....that scene hit me too hard... My mom died on Thursday after she fell asleep for a nap and I was doing the exact same thing as him. First time I've actually ended up crying watching one of your reactions 😢 another good video, but also damn you , lol
Seems sensible. I kept wondering why they just couldn't remove the lowest section of the ladder and have the maintenance crew bring a ladder instead. It's not like anyone has to climb that tower several times a day.
I wonder if Johnny Depp calls Leo at 3 am drunk and high as hell saying match in the gas tank Arnie boom boom??? Similar to what Hunter Thompson did to Johnny after they bonded. Now though if Johnny did that Leo might reply, turds in the bed next to your pillow poop poop they'd laugh and fall asleep talking about crazy bitches and being rich as hell... I like that story maybe you do as well
I told myself I wasn’t gonna cry on this one but damnit! I think you’re my favorite person to cry along with ❤ thank you and Blank for another awesome reaction to a solid movie. Love from Portland, Oregon ❤
Great reaction man, loved this movie as a kid. These movies have been getting you really emotional lately, I feel it. Hope you're doing well, and mentally as well.
I was so happy when you mentioned "men's mental health", everyone deserves to be supported when they're struggling.

The acting in this is phenomenal by Johnny, Leo and the lady who plays the mom. All fantastic performances.
Leo was offered the part of Max in Hocus Pocus but turned it down so he could be in this.
He knew how to pick them pretty early on, that's for sure.

All the water towers I've seen like that have a cage thing across the bottom of the ladder so nobody can climb up.
Seems sensible.
I kept wondering why they just couldn't remove the lowest section of the ladder and have the maintenance crew bring a ladder instead.
It's not like anyone has to climb that tower several times a day.
Right? Sue the town for negligence, then see if it turns out not to be so hard for someone other than Gilbert to stop him from going up the tower...
I like that story maybe you do as well
3:14 "gilbert got a lot on his plate" 😂😂 fitting statement
The song of this movie is one that keeps with you from the first time
This movie definitely hits the heart. It reminds me of my family and the turmoil we have endured. Thank you for the memories! ❤
Yea!!! I’ve been asking reactors to watch this one. Thank you!
This is one of my favorite movies ever. I am so glad you finally got the chance to see it. Thanks for your beautiful geniune reaction. Keep rockin it.
Wow, I forgot a lot about this movie-including just how beautiful young Johnny Depp was.
Great acting by everyone in this film. Thanks for your reaction.
Marty McFly's Daddy = George McFly = Crispin Glover. Check out 'Willard.' He's cool in it, lotta rats, too :D
WEGG is basically his most normal guy role of all time haha, I always second guess that it's actually him when I see him in this.
Just the one scene of Arnie running from the truck to the house...perfect
Fantastic movie, I remember the first time a watched it. It took me a few days to get over the feels.
Well I missed the premiere I was working but still this is a good movie Johnny and Leo are phenomenal actors ❤
Man, I’d forgotten about this one, and I’m left crying with you. This movie is rough and beautiful. Much love.
