He was a bit of an alcoholic so he was useless in the morning and in the afternoon but when he hit his alcohol sweetspot around 12.00 he was a fucking wizard. Did the exact same thing as this guy but eyeballed it and sketched it out roughly with a pencil and the tile slid in with pretty much 0.5mm of gap.

My dad’s 73 and has been a tile layer since he was 16 or so, in the mid-60s. He started as an apprentice and had his own crew by 22. I worked with him a lot over the years. I remember I was 8 in ‘96 and he would take me at huge construction sites to help him and learn the job. Stuff like this technique in the video was his bread and butter, and I would see him do all kinds of clever tricks, especially when it came to laying a tile around radiator pipes coming out of the floor - I have seen him open holes on the tile for the pipes to fit through. In my experience the true sign of tile laying marksmanship is not the work around corners and small areas, but keeping the required tile number exactly the same when laying tiles across very large rooms that may have walls and foundation pillars or other obstacles. Too often tile layers may miss the measurements and mark, and may have to cut the tile or add pieces of a tile next to a wall, when laying a big area. Keeping the pattern and not requiring more or less of a tile when going through an obstacle is an amazing feeling, and it looks amazing afterwards too. My dad’s also an artist when it comes to making marble stairways. Now that’s an art - from measurements to laying the marble itself, it’s a tough job and not a lot of people know how to do it correctly.

That’s the thing about most labor, the end result is seen by the buyer and not the one doing the job. Yet the one doing the job gets to see the process of how it’s done but the buyer usually doesn’t. So the worker can’t admire the end result of their work and the buyer can’t admire the process it took to get the work done.

I kinda feel that, but while I personally have been praised for my thorough work, putting all that effort into doing something I've gotten way more backlash. Just getting yelled at by supervisors and bosses, and having customers complain that I'm slow af. I've lost a job before for being thorough with my tasks. Been pressured to quit jobs too because they thought I was being slow because I'm lazy or don't care about my job. For the people that acknowledge my hard work I take great pride, but all the negative feedback just burns me out. So nowadays, I do most of the job as fast as possible being an "alright" job because i get less complaints that way.
