I'm 66 and I remember going to small villages between Santa Fe and Albuquerque and seeing old 80-90 year old couples dancing like this--they did a "shorta"? and "put your little foot" dance steps. I've seen regional Hispanic polka steps on youtube, but your dance steps and hops and music matched the dancing and music as I remember. These communities had very strong European roots and accordian sounds. Dances were family orientated with babies, kids all the way to grand and gr-grandparents.
Yep, Wisconsin here. In Chicago the polish and German communities were the Polka scene for decades. Those families are being replaced by Hispanics that like that same music. That dance you mentioned is called a Shaddish.
Polka music was brought to US by German and Polish immigrants. Mexicans liked it so much, they developed their own style, now called "tex-mex". You may be referring to the Shottis instead of shorta, which is still a popular style of dancing. In a twist of fate, "Tex-Mex" music is now very popular in Europe where polka music began. Hope this helps you. I love both styles... Polka music is fun!
Love the show from Albuquerque here! I love the Mariachi music!! It seems like the same kind of music!! And love Polka from here in Orlando German American Club we have a blast every year Octoberfest it is the best in Florida Cassleberry fl!!
Goodbye, Joe, my good friend, and my prayers to Marty (Martha), and family. It was a pleasure to have worked with you from 2003 through 2014. I will forever miss those "well, what do we do to fix this problem" phone calls. The best footage remains unseen, as there are over 50 hours of unedited material from the 2010 Buffalo tapings, two hours of which should prove worthy of a PBS special.
Man I think everyone has that connection with sirting down at 7 to watch this with the grandparents to watch it on none othor than RFDTV and you look over and they both got there foot tappin time sure goes fast I miss those times
Ah when i was younger we'd stay over at gramma and grampa's house on saturday night just to watch this at 9pm then its the hope of them playing the red raven polka every show we used to guess what color vest he'd be wearing too im 19 now and im learning how to play the accordion well starting with the concertina
miss watchin hard drinkin lincoln and captain kangaroo (went by polka paul) hittin the dance floor hard to some of the polka acts singin about beer, chinese food and other sorts on rural tv.
Never heard of him until today. I used to listen to local Polka shows on the radio when I was younger, then lost track of them. I"M Polish-Italian and don"t care for most Italian music except for some opera and the band that does all those goofy songs. The rest of it sounds like the singers have severe gastrointestinal disorders (well, maybe Mario Lanza is an exception). Now to look for Polkas sung in Polish. I like all Polkas, from all countries and musical styles. "The Streets of Bakersfield" with Buck Owens was a Polka! Itook forever for me to catch that. Eventually, Ill listen to German and other Polkas.
Hi eekoh472, this is Handyman48, if you have the Dish Network the channel 231 then you can watch Big Polka show Friday,5 PM 4 PM Central, depending where you live.
Bravo! Je ne savais pas autant de polakos en USA. Personnellement je ne devais pas être en cette grand e Féodale. Mais j'étais l'enfant unique de parents disparus?
In reply to B Metz. The word you are looking for is Schottische. Shot ish a. It is a Scandanavian word for a dance music that they thought was Scottish. It has evolved to where there are dozens of regional variations but in most there are steps the couple does side by side (16 beats) then steps in line of dance (16 beats).
I really love the Big Joe Polka Show. Thanks for uploading this. It has cheered me up plenty of times! Is there any more episodes of this show I can see elsewhere? Thank you!
Je regarde avec les larmes aux yeux. Je n'aurais du jamais me trouvé en France. Raciste et depuis peu enver les blanc et blond. Il ny a pas cette joie avec les gens.
FilipsPerez: Guess where the Mexicans acquired it? ?Te acuerdas de Musica Nortena? Well, it was copied from German, Czech, Polish, etc. Polka is contiguous. It doesn't know any boundaries and I am glad for that. ?Y usted?
RIP Big Joe, say hi to my Dad in heaven, tell him I miss him, a lot. He loved polka music. Thanks for the memories.

It kind reminds me of Mexican Tejano music, and is that Abraham Lincoln getting his boogie on?
