My son who is a trainee mechanic is just about to start this job, this video has been incredibly helpful. There are a number of self locking nuts that need to be replaced and used only once, might be good to add that in somewhere
Nice, where can I find one new like this for a 99 B5 2.8l v6 passat? I need my car back on the road asap and can not drive it til I replace the hub and don't have a press.. any info on where I could get a loaded hub/bearing/knuckle for my car would be appreciated.
I just had my front passenger hub replaced and now the and light is on and ABS system isn't working along with traction control, ASR light is on right after moving a couple feet. The brake light and chime are in but if you press the air recirculation button right next to the AC button the red light on the cluster and chime turns right off, like it's a switch our somethings crossed. And it all happened after having both hubs replaced
It's easy to break the sensor trying to remove it. There are fine wires inside connecting the coil to the sensor. I would just buy a new sensor along with the bearing assembly and ball joint.
+ATCkeepsUsafe for some reason it still drive straight and the steering wheel was aligned straight also. I just got a alignment before that. I've replaced both control arms, ball joints, tie rods, tie rod ends, right after both hubs were replaced. Go on my channel and look at the video that says "catastrophic hub fail" or something like that. I was pissed off so bad that morning
Oooh - Don't use the torque wrench to loosen the axel nut!! Use a breaker bar to loosen 1/2 turn, then back to torque wrench for the next 38 ftlbs, then back to breaker bar for the final 1/6th turn. It's not good to put that much extra stress on your expensive torque wrench. Use the cheap breaker bar!!
man that procedure on the hub nut just seems like some volkswagen tech manual writer is pulling a LOL on us. and also they say to replace almost every single bolt on this fricken car with a new one when changing things out... what a bunch of BS... give it a visual inspection and if it's still good reuse it.
Not so. Some of these bolts are torque-to-yeild bolts. They do in fact stretch over time with stress. They need to be replaced when replacing these items. I speak from experience of not changing them when I should have. The subframe bolts started to back themselves out after about 500 miles. I had to replace them all. 25K miles later and no probs.
@@superdave19855 I replaced my subframe today. I reused the bolts. They are stretch bolts. I guess ill see how they hold after 500 miles. Did you torque to 100 ft pounds plus a 1/4 turn?
THEWIDOWSON Yes I did. I guess if you want you could put some loc-tite. I just learned the hard way and decided to go ahead and follow the manufacturer recommendations.
@@superdave19855 After driving the car about 50 miles im defiantly going to be ordering some new bolts. The car feels too loose. And everything is installed and torqued correctly. So lesson learned.
Can anyone tell me if I have to replace the tie rod end nut I'm getting the stretch bolts for the control arm and the rest should've came with the steering knuckle
BS... WHEN HE TORQUES IT TO THE 37LBS LISTEN, YOU HEAR THE CLICK ON THE TORQUE WRENCH & HE CONTINUES TO TORQUE THE NUT PAST THE 37LBS THRESHOLD& THEN ADDS A 6th OF A TURN???????

How often does the tie rod end come off like that.. Thanks for making the video.
Went to the link provided. Could not find the steering knuckle or hub assembly for Mk4 VR6 GTI
Incredible video man this is going to save my life
Grinding noise gets worse when turning to left or right? 2002 mk4 2 door golf

2 years later but lol ecs tunning got it
Use the spreader for removing from the strut as well as installation. Avoids all the hammering
Does anyone have the torque spec for the nut that attaches the knuckle to the strut I didn't see it listed in the torque spec list
Yup same
Where do I go to buy a set for the fronts ?
Got mine from parts geek.
So what about getting the control arm down for knuckle to slide on properly
Yeah he stopped the video right when things got complicated

FockYouMang .hi man.. i have the same problem..how did you solved problem..thanks
Nice Video!
Both hubs were replaced but a week apart and the ASR and ABS lights came on instantly
It sounds like the sensors are too far away from the hubs, the correct distance is about the width of a hacksaw blade 3mm

+ATCkeepsUsafe they must've did an alignment when they finished
+ATCkeepsUsafe I never said it did or didn't

Great Video, thank you
excellent guide
All without a Steering-Knuckle Spreader??? Wow; I can't get myne back on by hitting it with a hammer...
