There's nothing wrong with watching sheep shearing. I like sheep, and I'm just hoping that the sheep are not too uncomfortable while being sheared. I didn't think that they were, but I started wondering that yesterday while watching a sheep shearing video when seeing sheep really kicking and trying to get away.
this is such a good way of explaining it. I watched this over and over again and then sheered my friends sheep with 0 expierence and my fastest sheep was less then 30 minutes. hope to one day do it in 10 like you guys do haha
they probably can do it in like 2-3 min. At the start my time was like 15 min, then after 10 sheeps was 10. Now is 8 and I am progresing. Take your time and you will learn with expirience.

Nice video. It's really sad every time there is a video involving an animal there has to be all the stupid negative comments. It's too bad people are so disconnected from agriculture. What a better person you would be if you were raised on a farm and understood life.
sure helps if you are taller too ;-) I am only 4' 3/4"...he makes it look so easy and for a strapping young man its a breeze....great job and good tutorial. I am just learning to shear my own small flock..I live way out in the boonies and not just anyone will come to shear so I bought my own shears and do it myself. My sheep are very tame and they are actually haltered and tied up. I do what I can with them standing and then I have a 'sheep chair'...I back them up and put them in that and do the bottom side and trim their feet. My sheep that I am cross breeding for market lambs are for the most part hair on the under side but I still have some woolies. I am crossing Dorper/Texel this is why they have clean undersides. The sheep chair is one of the best things I ever built and so easy for me...

Anyone else here because someone they know bought a sheep an you got sucked into "helping" sheer it 😂, great video really appreciate the time you took ,because in the end game this really helps make it least amount of difficult for both sheep an the cutter.
Its all about the position, if they can't get a leg to the ground, they are fairly helpless. If you get the position wrong as well, they feel like they're smothering and panic.
I found a long haired terrier in mid summer with 7" dreadlocks in his coat. He laid there the whole time calm like that because he was feeling so much better as I shaved him.He only knew me an hour, he knew I was rescuing from death. I wish I would have filmed it and I obviously needed sheep shears. He's my best buddy now. :)
The animal is playing dead. It’s a instinct. Pulling the head to the side simulates a prey animal giving up on life. You can see that behavior with wild deer who are badly injured and can’t run too. They pull the head to the side, expose the throat at wait for the kill. He forever that sheep at the beginning into that position and overpowered it to get that instinct going
Anybody else wanna see a guy be like "Ok sheepy, just lie down here and everything is gonna be alright." and tbe sheep listens and gets a treat, similar to a dog or other pet.
I'm a dog groomer. if only dogs were this cooperative for grooming. Plus we have to make them look nice. This guy seems to be handling this large animal quite capably and gently.
I feel like the ragdolling sheep often do when being sheared is learned helplessness, and you're saying that like dogs can't be trained to enjoy handling? It's quite possible for any animal.
I don't get why people are all it a tissy about wearing wool... if you get wool products that are ETHICALLY sourced then the sheep aren't hurt or anything. they are probably just uncomfortable for a bit but that's nothing... I am all out against animal abuse but wool I think is not truly abuse if it's ethically sourced..

Oh for crying out loud. These sheep HAVE to be sheared. The wool eventually becomes ratty pulls the skin and will infect the skin. This is what sheep are for. God instructed us to take care of animals. He provided a way for food and clothing. These sheep are well fed, and cared for. There is nothing unethical about wool. There is nothing unethical about eggs either. Those pop out of a hen regardless of where they are or how they live. Maybe the problem with human beings is they are so hungry for power and control that instead of letting the other human beings live their own life, raise their animals the way animals are supposed to be raised, outside in pens and cared for properly, and just let everybody have their own little piece of land with their own animals and their own farm sets instead of cramming them into cities promising them offers of jobs and cars and now the government provides cell phones and where do you think the food is going to come from? It is going to come from the farms and in order to mass produce all that is needed for these people the government has crammed into the cities, then you need more animals on these Farms to produce that food. Cows fart, horses fart, chickens fart, human beings fart this cow farting thing destroying the environment is the most ridiculous thing I can't believe so many people are believing such a stupid lie this is the ecosystem the way God set it up. Nice video. I was surprised at how little the sheep struggled. None of the sheep looked more than annoyed. The first one looked like "Get on with this" How many times can a sheep be sheered in a lifetime and how much do they struggle the first few times?

I have heard that shearing is inhumane and then I have seen unsheared sheep and in the heat they pant, they don't want to move, they can overheat. . . . .it's inhumane to not shear them and let them carry around so much weight, become matted, and wear extra heavy blankets of wool in the hot summer months. That's is what is inhumane.

I saw a demonstration at a farm on open farm day. The shearers wore specialist shearers' clothing - stretch jeans with no rivets, sleeveless t shirts, moccasins to minimise pinching and scratching of the livestock.
We have a sheep grazing in our yard and the owners have all but forgotten she exists, so we were thinking of buying her. My only concern is we'd have to shave her and I'm absolutely terrified of gutting her, especially since she's never been shaved before. Probably going to have a pro do it until she gets use to it. This video was very informative and I'll definitely be taking notes for when I inevitably have to do it myself.
Im a kiwi shearer and i must say that was a very tidy job but very slow and strange way of doing it, as in the blows you take are a quite off the usual pattern and you dont use the full comb in each blow making it take far longer then it should and more difficult then it should be, it should take no more than 1-2 minutes a sheep
They are using combs that look ( to Irish eyes, anyway) more like those used on animals with hair. Shearing them very cleanly, but a lot of strokes per sheep.
It's a young mans game that. I had to do 18 sheep of ours years ago because the shearer was so unreliable and I was worried about the sheep overheating mid summer. You would probably shoot me for this 😂 but I did the sheep standing up, my back is knackered anyway and I struggled. I can't turn them over anymore, a strong friend held the sheeo on a lead. The sheep are quite friendly which helped, as did a few handfuls of ewe nuts occasionally. It took me about 6 days between us but I could not find a replacement shearer for love nor money so I look at it as I did my bit. We found a better and reliable shearer the following year , I always book him around February time if I can to get an early shear. This guy has a spring hook thing he tues up above and leans onto, saves his back strain.
Do they have to twist their heads like that? I have no knowledge of sheep shearing so I’d like to know if there’s not other more gentle way of handling them? Like by their legs etc?
Hiya and THANK YOU for such a wonderful tutorial--I have a question about combs/blades--I shear only for myself and keep a flock of under 20 most of the time--I am having a devil of a time keeping the combs from gumming up with lanolin/grease, and find I have to clean several times per sheep to keep cutting well without second cuts. My sheep aren't filthy by any means, yet they are so greasy it makes shearing dreadful. Pasture/hay fed, salt and water (no grain or supplements). I've been using a comb similar to the one in the video. Have you some tips I may glean from? Thanks again, and thanks in advance!!
After each time you shear your 20 sheep you should have your blades sharpened. Many people/shearers know how to do this at home. Buy a quality name brand machine with quality blades and oil before every shearing every begins. I oil mine in the correct area and let the blades run on speed 1/2 for several minutes to ensure the oil is distributed properly and there is not too much oil by wiping away any excess on the blades I see that may appear shiny. Check your tension. Each shearers has a tension piece at the top that holds the comb and the blades together to be able to shear and the best theory is "tighten as much as your fingers comfortably can (don't hurt your fingers to do it) and then untwist by about 1/2 a turn" and this gives enough tightness to keep everything together and enough room for things to move freely w/o creating any friction which can not only cause issues with cutting, but can cause the blades to be warmer than they should be. Usually the oil on the blades themselves keeps them from becoming "gummed up" from lanolin and the teeth may become more gummed up as they are pushing through some thick fiber with lanolin lining that kept the sheep waterproof over winter, but the comb will have the stuff come off or I just take a garage towel and wipe it off occasionally if needed. If there is an actual issue with cutting I am thinking my blades are not sharp, not oiled, or do not have the correct tension. If my machine is years old and has gone through a fair bit of sheep then I may also be checking internal parts as mine has a fan I clear after every use to ensure air is flowing through to keep it cooled, but the tension I spoke of has a spring on the inside that can become worn over several years of leaving the device with tension when I put it away. I usually put it away with the slightest twist to make sure the new sharp blades and clean comb don't fall off and I clean the comb and blades and sharpen the blades I did use that day before putting them away. I always buy two sets of blades, even if I only have a small flock like yours. One is always sharp and can be put on and the other is in use and/or going to be sharpened by me before being put away so they become the sharp set ready to use. These would be the key items I would be looking at for the issues you are referring to for the issues you describe as you are not alone in having these issues and it's normally one of these things that is the cause.
How long does it takes to master this craft? I also wonder why are all sheeps so calm? Must you work with them from beginning, to develop this kind of behavior, or is it just their nature? Nice video and sorry for my english.
The sheep are so compliant and calm. I'm sure they don't enjoy the process but I bet it feels good to them once all that wool is sheered. I just watched the sheering competition, (my first), and it makes me sad that humans have to make a sport of everything. They were not careful and the sheep were bleeding in several areas. It was a pleasure to watch you demonstrate how it should be done with care for the animal.

she looked so chill and relaxed after a while. my dog does that when I wrangle her to clip her nails. at first she's resistant but eventually she gives up and just lets it happen

This is probably a dumb question, but what exactly is the red stuff? I was thinking some sort of soap to wash the sheep afterwards, but I have no clue, that's just my uneducated guess...lol!
he's doing a few different positions than i saw in articals (i've never sheered a sheep my mom and sister are allergic) and he was doing different strokes than i've seen in other videos but hey that's his way of doing this

I prefer my shearers to take 5 minuets per sheep, or so, as so often with the blocks whom pride themselves of rushing do hurt and cut the sheep....

Hiya and THANK YOU for such a wonderful tutorial--I have a question about combs/blades--I shear only for myself and keep a flock of under 20 most of the time--I am having a devil of a time keeping the combs from gumming up with lanolin/grease, and find I have to clean several times per sheep to keep cutting well without second cuts. My sheep aren't filthy by any means, yet they are so greasy it makes shearing dreadful. Pasture/hay fed, salt and water (no grain or supplements). I've been using a comb similar to the one in the video. Have you some tips I may glean from? Thanks again, and thanks in advance!!
After each time you shear your 20 sheep you should have your blades sharpened. Many people/shearers know how to do this at home. Buy a quality name brand machine with quality blades and oil before every shearing every begins. I oil mine in the correct area and let the blades run on speed 1/2 for several minutes to ensure the oil is distributed properly and there is not too much oil by wiping away any excess on the blades I see that may appear shiny. Check your tension. Each shearers has a tension piece at the top that holds the comb and the blades together to be able to shear and the best theory is "tighten as much as your fingers comfortably can (don't hurt your fingers to do it) and then untwist by about 1/2 a turn" and this gives enough tightness to keep everything together and enough room for things to move freely w/o creating any friction which can not only cause issues with cutting, but can cause the blades to be warmer than they should be. Usually the oil on the blades themselves keeps them from becoming "gummed up" from lanolin and the teeth may become more gummed up as they are pushing through some thick fiber with lanolin lining that kept the sheep waterproof over winter, but the comb will have the stuff come off or I just take a garage towel and wipe it off occasionally if needed. If there is an actual issue with cutting I am thinking my blades are not sharp, not oiled, or do not have the correct tension.
If my machine is years old and has gone through a fair bit of sheep then I may also be checking internal parts as mine has a fan I clear after every use to ensure air is flowing through to keep it cooled, but the tension I spoke of has a spring on the inside that can become worn over several years of leaving the device with tension when I put it away. I usually put it away with the slightest twist to make sure the new sharp blades and clean comb don't fall off and I clean the comb and blades and sharpen the blades I did use that day before putting them away. I always buy two sets of blades, even if I only have a small flock like yours. One is always sharp and can be put on and the other is in use and/or going to be sharpened by me before being put away so they become the sharp set ready to use.
These would be the key items I would be looking at for the issues you are referring to for the issues you describe as you are not alone in having these issues and it's normally one of these things that is the cause.

As soon as theyre on their ass/back they mostly automatically get calm

The sheep are so compliant and calm. I'm sure they don't enjoy the process but I bet it feels good to them once all that wool is sheered. I just watched the sheering competition, (my first), and it makes me sad that humans have to make a sport of everything. They were not careful and the sheep were bleeding in several areas. It was a pleasure to watch you demonstrate how it should be done with care for the animal.

This is probably a dumb question, but what exactly is the red stuff? I was thinking some sort of soap to wash the sheep afterwards, but I have no clue, that's just my uneducated guess...lol!
