I remember hearing him being interviewed by Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2. A very funny guy and really down to earth. Amazing talent. Moon River usually finds me with something in my eye.
Andy does the pro forma route on this hard to sing number. David's word? Maybe. I was looking for more emotion from Williams. It sounds like he's screaming at the poor girl he's trying to to court. Maybe a bit of passion would do the trick. This has been covered a lot, many times. William's version is technically sound, of course. Just a gig on his feeling in the song. Finally, I don't think this song gets enough credit as a real American classic, probably the last, of the great composers of modern music in the US.
Don't think pro forma describes this recording accurately, however, there is an element of vocal excess especially compared to Alpert's version; yet, Williams pulls it off, if just barely, and the passion can be measured somewhere in the red zone of the VU meter.
I can guarantee you that no modern artist can sing like this, they all need some sort of auto tune. But this is just pure talent
The magic of Andy Williams and Burt Bacharach put together, the best version
