I was there for this performance. It wasn't even the finals and it made barbershop history. It was a completely captivating performance. Words can't describe the way it made the audience feel.
I am so envious. I have watched this video no less than 30 times over the years, and I am blown away every time. Just re-visited it again today and saw your post. There's just something about them and their incredible meld that keeps me coming back.
I don’t wanna be that guy but that‘s not how views on TH-cam work. It’s one view per device. Only mention this, cause that means it’s even more impressive and every view is a different person who found this.
It's between this performance and Revival "Wedding Bells (Are Breaking Up That Old Gang Of Mine) (1998 International)" both are performances with a distinct soulful melancholy, almost tear-jerking bravado that every barbershop song should have if it should be considered the greatest of all time. Parodies and Funny skits and Pop songs ...sorry guys.
This is the highest scoring song in Barbershop as of now. I only checked as far back as 2003, since 2000-2002 I cant seem to find the scores, and before that the scoring system was different. 486 in Music (Currently the highest Music score achieved even up to now), 473 in Presentation, and a 478 in Singing (Also currently the highest Singing score achieved even up until now). Total score of 1437, or a 95.8%. Those records have still held true for an entire decade. What a phenomenal performance.
Thank you for doing this! It's nice to get some external validation on what I have been telling folks for many years is my all-time favorite barbershop performance.
Nadiv Kaspi I think you may be wrong I just looked back on the international society scores page and did some calculations and I think I may be tied for best with “cuddle up a little closer” by platinum in 2000. I think it was because I saw that they these guys got penalized on the performance catagory for this song. Do you know why they may have gotten a penalty here
@@connerrock1164 I believe (and I very well may be wrong) it was due to the religious nature of the song. From the contest judging handbook: "A song performed in contest must be neither primarily patriotic nor primarily religious in intent. Violation of the provision relating to patriotic or religious intent will result in penalties up to and including forfeiture by the Performance judges(s) only."
@@trips644 You are correct. Had they not been penalized for that, this would be the highest scoring performance in BHS history. Regardless of this fact, this performance is still widely agreed to be the most moving demonstration ever.
I can't believe a bass equipped with such full-bodied low notes is capable of reaching that high.. Am sining 2nd Bass myself in a classical choir, i'm really starting to lose it around D4 - D#4..! What Jim did there in the Tag, was a true full voiced belted F#4, he didn't thin it out, not in the slightest, it's remarkable!
It reminds me of Earl Hagn, the bass of the Side Street Ramblers on the tag to "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry"in 1983. They did a unison post on F#. Brian Beck held the post while Dennis Malone (bari) Keith Houts (tenor) and Earl peeled off. It was an incredible tag.
Jim Henry...hot damn. This doesn't discount how damn good the other members are. Brandon Guyton's blend is so good you could never pick him out. Fred Farrell's is still going strong as a tenor after all these years, *and* seems to be in his prime. And Mike Slamka might be the best lead in the current AIC. This level of excellence is why they won.

Bro I must have watched this 50 times. This is the best vocal performance I have ever seen. It is just so perfect. They have such a good blend it is at times difficult to pick out who is singing which part, especially between the lead and baritone. When they go to the super high stuff at the end, MOST quartets have at least a small but of wavering but they just nail it chord after chord after chord. This is what any quartet should aspire to sound like in terms of pure skill. BUT even beyond that they do what no one ever talks about which is they EMOTE the song. I really feel like the lead singer feels what he is singing. Masterful performance. I would have given hem first any other year as well.
You should listen to the studio recorded version that they did! You can find it on TH-cam or Spotify, and its just as amazing as their live performance. That way you can listen to them on the go.

So much woe, so far to go
Forgive me if I complain...
Up in morning
Out on the job
Work like the devil for my pay
But that lucky old Sun
He's got nothing to do
But roll around Heaven all day
Fuss with my woman
Toil for my kids
Sweat till I'm wrinkled and grey
While that lucky old Sun
Has nothing to do
But roll around Heaven all day
My soul is tired
and my sad hearts aching
The joy and hope all gone
There's no relief
For a back that's breaking
Misery lingers on
So many troubles
Sorrow and pain
Can't go on living this way
While that lucky old Sun
He got nothing to do
But roll around Heaven day
Wont you hear my plea good Lord
Lord above cant you know I'm finding
The tears all in my eyes
Send down that cloud
With a silver lining
Lift me to paradise
Show me that river
Take me across
Wash all my troubles away
Like that lucky old Sun
Give me nothing to do
But roll around Heaven all day.
Roll around heaven, roll around heaven, roll around heaven all daaaaaaaaay.

This is ridiculous. I found this video 2 days ago, and I've probably watched it 40 times. I can't stop.
UK here, thank you USA for Barbershop singing, we don't have it here but it's very wonderful
When it dawned on me that this is the same guy from GHG, and the conductor of Ambassadors - I was blown away. A barbershop rockstar.
@@Cam-kv4kv Awesome! I really am getting into this style of singing. I aspire to start or join a quartet of my own and sing my heart out (baritone of course). Thanks for the tip I will have to go and find it.
You voiced my thoughts perfectly. After all these years- the singing and emoting is still the best I’ve seen in any Barbershop performance.
One voice makes me want to sing, two voices makes me feel like a king, three voices things getting out of hand, four voices takes me to the promised land!!
These guys are by far the best of the best. I have been an admirer of barbershop music and singing my whole life and have sung with many groups over the years. This group is truly the best Ive ever heard. Their sound is unique and their blend is second to none. OUTSTANDING!!!!!! GREAT JOB.......................Paul
fantastic singing gentlemen. This tune is such a anthem for the hard working family man, and your performance is so soulfull and emotional.
magnificent!
The passing chords on "Lucky Old" at 4:37 are phenomenal.
Just amazing.. especially the guy on the left!!!!
After nearly nine years, still the best, most exciting I've ever heard, and I grew up with Barbershop. It can still bring a tear.
That bass has a heck of a range!
How on earth could 8 people not like that. That was amazing. Gave me goose bumps listing to that. Simply amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the emotions that flowed through them while performing and especially after. Quite an amazing performance!
In my 64years this the best contest song I have heard. I think that audience would agree..Mac Campbell
I love how David Wright is such a music genius when his major is in math... This is probably the greatest barbershop song ever written and performed.
Music is math
And math is music. Though I could never convince the music majors of that. ( I was a math major).
@@TomCee53 I am a music major and yeah I agree with you that they are connected
@@Jakeroo767 You'll never see two fields so close with such different people practicing them as math and music lol.
This is the most measured performance I've ever seen.
These fellas prove the human voice is surely the greatest instrument
