    Hey, Mike, Jamie from Toronto here. I just wanted to tell you that you're one of the few who really knows Seoul inside and out without any touristic BS. I appreciate your channel as a Canadian who has travelled to Seoul a few times before. Please keep it coming. I am now your subscriber. Thanks!

    Thank you for a pleasant, easy-going walk through the old alleyways which will be disappearing. I suppose it is inevitable that the old places give way to newer more profitable development in the form of expensive condos, apartment buildings and office towers. These little side-streets full of mom and pop shops are precious, though and I look forward to seeing more.

    • @MikeFromKorea

      Thank you! My wife is convinced the alleys in this video will be around for quite a while longer yet due the current state of Seoul's real estate market. It's not a great time for new construction, and she expects a slow recovery. Time will tell, I suppose.

  • @SDongil

    Those old tight alleys you (and I) like were sometimes labeled "피맛골" - "Alley to avoid horses". Seoul should rebrand some as "피차골"..."Alley to avoid cars"

    Another great tour of one of Seoul's best areas Mike! That 제육볶음 place looked really good, and 8,000 KRW is an amazing deal for what they give you there, especially these days! Thanks for the video!

      Thanks! I've become much more conscious of how much I drop on a meal these days. If this blog alone weren't enough motivation for me to "go back to my roots", so to speak, the current menu prices out there sure would be.
      I'm looking forward to your next one. I love what you guys are doing with the random subway stations.

    Fully agree on the runny eggs over rice. Magical combo and regularly have it as my Sunday morning breakfast.

    • @MikeFromKorea

      I should eat it more often. We always have rice in the cooker and a huge thing of eggs on the counter.

      Me too. I remember someone complaining in a review (about a well respected Korean restaurant in Halifax) that the yolk of the egg on their bibimbap was too cooked. They only gave it 3/5 stars (harsh in my opinion). I think the yolk was more cooked out of caution because a lot of Canadians would be scared to eat a runny yolk. Btw Mike do you notice the yolks are a different colour in many parts of Asia like Korea, Japan, Thailand, etc...

    Hello Mike, you should know that many Korean's there in and an abroad who sees your vlog would totally agreed with your sentiments on a small places. Like the once you are showing, I would love to go by myself or with my family. It's a good thing to know your local places that you can go to, and the prices are moderated. Korean from USA.

      Thank you. I miss the days when there were so many more of those small places around. I always enjoyed checking out the various restaurants when I moved to a new neighborhood.

    Thank you for your super interesting videos. I have become super interested in Korean culture and would love to do a long term stay there some day. Your videos give a very nice perspective on the lesser known but still really good and interesting places in the city of Seoul.
    What is your other TH-cam so I can check out those videos as well?

    I like 종로 area. There was a Seoul Theater 서울극장 after the Corona pandemic. It was the cheapest place to go watch a movie. Many places are disappearing but I think it might be better for the future. Korea is a relatively small landmass, but it has good mountains, rivers, beaches, and small islands.
    In 2024, many restaurants are delivering more food so streets and restaurants are not as busy. 쿠팡 is a good site to groceries and food delivered. I predict it will become the site to dominate in Korea and perhaps regions around Korea.
    Bybthecway, you have a good soothing voice.

    • @MikeFromKorea

      Thank you! I remember 서울극장 well. I went there many times in the 1990s. The first time my wife and I saw a movie together was there. 'Armageddon' in 1998. Sometimes I miss those older theaters. Seeing movies in them was a very different experience than in places like CGV.

    i am korean but i dont know why these buildings should be subject to redevelopment and only Joseon dynasty's buildings are preserved as cultural properties.
    these are all korean history too.

    • @MikeFromKorea

      Thanks for your comment. I hope the ones in this video do get preserved. As far as I know, they aren't marked for redevelopment yet. I just expect that it will happen in the next decade, given the rate of development downtown. It's always possible the area could be transformed in the same way Ikseon-dong was instead of completely replaced.
