- Home Affairs Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi says his department was able to verify Thabo Bester's identity, which had been the subject of much debate.
His interaction with members of the media revealed that the 36-year-old convicted murderer and rapist was never registered as a South African citizen. Minister Motsoaledi has more on this story.

Others rely on aggressive behaviour towards journalists forgetting journalists are asking questions on behalf of the public, it is not that they’re just being inquisitive and besides, they too can be inquisitive, they’re still citizens!!! As a qualified Dr Motsoaledi is not desperate for money, he can afford to leave this job and go practise medicine. Not that he’ll make millions for sure, but he’ll have a decent life still. I’ve never seen him lose his temper, even in the face of aggressive and in your face journalists, because you do find such journalists! Motsoaledi for president!!
This minister really immerses himself in his portfolio. Gainer so much info besides the Bester saga.
He was like this at Health, intelligent, sweet talker but we all know where the department of Health is now.
I like how we get fooled easily by sweet talking, yes factual but am interested in what is happening in the portfolio not the talk. If am alone in that, that's ohk.
Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi is the best Home Affairs Minister we've ever had.

The interviewer was not listening to answers to questions she was asking the minister and at the same time, she wanted to attack the minister... you see why elders always say we are not smart, it is because this kind of behavior. But the minister made a very presentation and I am maybe one of the few people who are not shocked that Thabo Bester does not have an ID and especially because he didn't finish his schooling and again because he comes from a poor background. I know a lot of people with no IDs, including relatives. This is so normal.
Why it was not picked up that he doesn't have an ID as he was convicted...something is fishy
One sure thing about this particular Minister, unlike many of his colleagues ,is that he spends time learning and finding out every little detail about his department and has relevant info on his fingertips, i wish the rest of them could be like him.
Indeed , I have grown fond of him because of his awareness and care for his job.

Can anybody tell me how Thabo Bester was convicted and imprisoned without an ID document?
This was a great interview, very thorough on the Minister's part.
When a person gets arrested police takes fingerprints, how come the police database is not connected with that of Home Affairs? Because if it was then the police could have noticed that actually this Thabo person doesn't exist in the population register. The issue of ID could have been fixed right there 8 years ago. Negligence is a norm and our system is useless.

My question is, how did they verify if it was him in Tanzania without any record of his existence at home affairs hence he wants to see his extradition papers.??? This is such an extraordinary case.🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾 Exposé.
SAPS have his details and fingerprints but not an ID number. His name and other things such as prison numbers and date of birth are there. The police department there in Tanzania took his finger prints and forwarded them to the SAPS.
I always ask myself since he looked so different in Tanzania,how did they even suspect it is him?

We still need to prove that is indeed his mother....DNA. I love the minister well spoken but we just need to be sure. Anything is possible with Bester maybe the real Bester who was not registered died when he disappeared therefore we don't know if he did his homework to call himself as Thabo Bester.

Home affairs doesn’t deal with policing, correctional services or even judicial systems. Journalist should have known that and not ask a question that suggests that they do ahh otherwise the Minister explains the home affairs system and processes as it pertains to the TB case well. Can see serious technical loopholes that can be used by TB’s defence but hopefully they will lead to the improvements of SOPs etc at SA Home affairs, courts and police

WTF.. so the doctor who gave her passport to Nandipha went to the police as recently as 3 weeks ago, AFTER it was announced Thabo was on the run - and went for another passport? That woman needs to be arrested as she was complicit. I can not imagine these 2 women have risked their careers on a man who will never be punished. Slice and dice it all you want, but Thabo Bester can not receive greater punishment because he was already serving life.

What is the process followed when I convicted person, who has no identity, is sentenced?
Do we provide them an identity after tracing their birth or do we leave them as unidentified on the National Population Register.
Listening to this interview, it appears that Thabo did not have an ID despite that he was already in prison.
This is a real important gap identified.
Can we please close this gap and ensure that people like Thabo, who are prisoners serving prison time, are indeed IDENTIFIED...PLEASE...

Excellent questions. I think though, Motsoaledi's explanation as to whether they can issue a proper ID document for Bester without his permission is ridiculous. He says that they have proof of his birth at the hospital, his school admission, etc..but when each of us are born, we need to be registered and given an ID number? No need to ask Bester any permission.
Years ago none was registered at birth. It was up to your parents to go and register your birth with home affairs and then you didn't get an ID number, you would only get an ID number at 16.
Tanya, the issue of consent is dodgy. It was brave of the Minister to say, I am not sure about this rather than violating laws or giving us wrong information. This case is one of its own. I myself hasve never heard of someone being forced to take ID.
I don't know if you are a lawyer by profession, but Motsoaledi has lawyers by his side and they adviced him appropriately.
But any other foreigner's child could have been born in Bara and schooled in any SAn school. At 18 he then has a choice to claim SAn citizenship. Do you get where I am going?

How do you a driver's license without an ID document
So which means if Thabo comes out of prison and get his ID after his conviction the ID won't be linked to his past criminal activities. There is one thing im realising here.. Thabo might have knew the home affairs very well.. I think he mastered that and combined it with known people in higher place to beat it anytime of the day.. Wht im not getting from the interviewer and the minister is on all the loopholes how are they closing them.. Y not force every living being to have an identity.. Read slowly and understand. Motsoaledi was not even in Tanzania and it's possible that he never even held that passport in question in his hand. He gave a briefing according to what the immigration officials told him. Surely SA immigration officials would know how an American passport looks like and even its security features. Why do they scan passports kanti? Please don't "argue" for the sake of arguing.
