Ii really like the idea of cutting out swatches. l've cut myself off from buying fabric for the next few years. I didn't realize my stash until I made an Excel spreadsheet of it all 😮 😂
Beautiful fabric. I like the organizational style of the fabric bible - very cool. I've been sewing only since lockdown (thank you, and thank you YTU), but already I've developed a love for wool and have a slightly intimidating stash of wool to turn into garments, lol. Just in case I miss you, all of the very, very best of the Season to you and yours. Cheers! - Cathy (&, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Hey Cathy I’m glad to see you! I’ve been meaning to email you but I’ve been playing put out fires. The latest was a small flood in the basement. So much fun. Hope everyone and everything is good at your end
@@robintheparttimesewer6798 Robin!!! Water goes where it wants to. Seams to be the season for it. We had a small flood in our bathroom this week. Which is So much fun in an apartment when you're just waking up in the morning. Lol, it turned out mostly alright. I've been meaning to email you too! But yeah, Malibu fire season seems to be metaphorically happening for everybody on the Contient/Turtle Island right now... at least we all know Dick Van Dike (& his house) made it out in good health. We're good. Steve's busy with his "Christianity and Colonialism" course at Saint Paul's. The business of the Chaplaincy is going well. And it looks like we're going to have a nice... quiet... Christmas... to ourselves (for a change?). Google "The Ideal Embroidery Frame and Easel". Because I got one. Originally patented in 1881 by one Mary A. Maxwell of Boston (I fell down the rabbit hole so hard that I came back with the patent application, lol). My first project is embroidering a flower and leaves patch to sew to the back of my jean jacket. Using the left-over stash of embroidery thread that I got from Mum. Happy sigh. Still working on the 1950's dolman sleeve blouse, but it's getting there. Probably about 60% done. How about you. How goes you? How goes the Fam? How goes the southern Ontario section of this thing we call winter?
@ hey Cathy. Winter here is very weird keeps jumping up and down. It was 9 yesterday evening but we are expecting snow tomorrow. I’d rather have snow but down here they have problems driving in it!
@ I hit the wrong button… Everyone here is fine. Just got back from the Christmas concert. The little ones are so very cute. A couple of the older kids looked embarrassed. My grandson’s class looked good… I think they did I forgot my glasses. We were asked not to take pictures this year so there’s no proof that he was in a plaid red black top and orange pants…. My son said he was saving his arguments for more important things lol
You're like me - so many projects, so many possibilities. My stash is shamefully huge, even after getting rid of nearly half of my fabric a few years ago. I have started sorting by fabric type, then by color. And I have stopped buying synthetics, for the most part. But I'm a sucker for a beautiful fabric, especially when it's on sale or second-hand.
The height of relatability! I also like to pet fabrics and dream of what they will be when I finally get the time and skills. It also needs to be reorganized lol
Oh, you know it's gonna be good with an introduction like "Welcome to chaos!" I have a potential solution for that gorgeous grey cashmere-wool blend: Onion skins! I bought a brown striped wool to make Victorian silliness out of and when it arrived it was way more of a grey tone than I liked, and I'd been collecting onion skins for aobut a year for dye experiemnt purposes and it did a gorgeous job of making the grey brown into a lovely rich warm tone. And it's one of the few natural dyes that doesn't require mordant or anything, and far as I can tell it's about as stable a dye as one could expect, definitely not transient like turmeric.
I love love love this video. It’s so nice to see all the different fabrics you have. Where I live the only fabric store is Joann’s and their selection is very limited and hit or miss. They have zero wool or linen (real linen that is). You mentioned a good linen store in the United States that has good sales on linen. Would you mind letting me know which one it is? Id love to look online at what they have. Also, any suggestions on where to fine good (hopefully discounted) wool online? Thank you again for sharing your stash of beautiful fabric.
{commenting for the algorithmic boost} If you're lucky, the local Value Village will have a fabric section (right beside the bedsheets). I've been able to find destashed wool. You have to look on the regular, but sometimes you get lucky at the local charity shops. Because, back in the day, your city/town/village would have had a fabric shop of some sort... that stuff either ends up in landfill or at the local charity shop. Thank you Granny's... The only American shop that I know of for linen is Burnley and Trowbridge (unfortunately outside my budget). And I know that Mood has free patterns, and apparently decent prices for their location. Good luck with the hunt! - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
The linen place is called fabrics-store.com I’ve had good luck with them but always recommend getting swatches since I can’t guarantee you’ll have the same experience! If yours on their mailing list, they also send you discounts and sales. I don’t have a source of wool in the US I’m afraid 😔
Oh, I thought to do something like that, too, as I alsways forget what I already have. Let´s just say I have lots of black cotton fabric :D I shall use your video as an inspiration to finanlly organize my stash!
I'm not sure because the lighting probably don't show well the colours, but you could combine some of the ivory looking speciality fabrics to make a fantasy dress. It would have great texture.
My sister once asked me if Quilters had something like Ravelry , which is for knitters? I laughed at the time and said no. But it's a good idea ! I do try to keep a record...somewhat 😂🩷 The green velvet dress! I would like a 15-20 min video w u working on it. Even time yourself. I find this a great way to move things along if even a bit. Merry Christmas 🎄❤️
My stash and project list are also bigger than I can keep up with... Very relatable. I'm not fabric buying ban, except for specific fabric for reenactment garments. But no "let's see what the recycling centre has" kinda buys. Because they often have nice things and it's soooo cheap it's hard to say not. But my physical and mental space are limited :D
So many beautiful fabrics! I was particularly intrigued by the idea of that striped satin Edwardian walking suit, or the liberty silk pajamas. But whatever you make will be interesting im sure 😁
Just catching up with your videos and I feel like I have to admit that I also bought two big cuts of wool from the Fabworks sale 😂 I need to do the same thing and go through my stash now to organise it 😅
I wear medieval shifts to bed. I have two in linen and one in flannel with doggies all over it. Time to replace them tho as it has been a few years since I made the first ones and they are wearing out.
You could number the boxes and note which box it's in, or just note which box is where. Quilters have it easier, it's nearly always cotton, so no type needed. You at least have reccomendations on patterns. You could do a reticule, hats, pockets on a string etc, sewing hussif, epp etc from some of your smaller pieces? Your upholstery fabric would be water resistant too. Your small glam pieces coud be split, and used for panels under the top? Have you looked at the costumes in My Fair Lady lately. 2 metres will make a skirt.
Greatly looking forward to seeing the green velvet Merida! Love the catalogue idea. I'm usually quite good about keeping very little in stash but when I win the Euromillions and have a fabric room I will recall it. Have you considered storing your fabric vertically within each box, Marie Kondo style? It means you don't have to get everything out when you want to get just one thing out.
So great to see your stash! Also this may be silly, but where did you get your sweater?? I have been searching for the perfect black knit sweater and yours looks like exactly what I have wanted!
One of the things I always wondering about when people talk about 'their stash'. Especially with historical/costuming. When you see a fabric on sale, that you love... how much do you get?
The linen store is fabrics-store.com! I recommend getting swatches - I’ve had good luck with their fabric but can’t guarantee your experience will be the same 😥 If you’re on the mailing list, they periodically send out emails with sales and discounts. I have a more comprehensive list of stores over on my Patreon - I’m reluctant to recommend much openly since ordering fabric can be so hit or miss and I don’t want you to have a bad experience 😔
Sure you could sew up that leg slit...or you could make a dress for your dream dnd character and that leg slit can show off a dagger strapped to your thigh and cool over the knee boots...
I usually shop at Goldhawk Road but it can be a bit overwhelming - there’s loads of shops there! Soho still has some older shops that are beautiful like the Cloth House, and Liberty is always amazing eye candy ☺️
I'm not crazy about cutting the fabric swatches-seems a waste of time and fabric. What about photos? Also not as bulky as swatches. Especially if you want to do the catalog on a spreadsheet.
The pro for actual fabric swatches is that you can feel it and see how it looks in different lights. It might not be an important info for everyone though
This is true! I tried to cut in discrete places but especially for the shorter cuts, seemed a bit of a waste 🤔 I’ve heard of people making photo albums on their phones too! An excel spreadsheet sounds super organised too 😂
There's a website called Threadloop that lets you make a searchable digital catalogue with space for photos and aaaaaaall the stats, if setting up spreadsheets feels like a bit much
So glad I’m not the only one with six years worth of projects in their mind! 😆
Same!!
One day, turns into one year eventually.
Ii really like the idea of cutting out swatches. l've cut myself off from buying fabric for the next few years. I didn't realize my stash until I made an Excel spreadsheet of it all 😮 😂
Whyyyy is this my favorite type of video?? The dopamine rush when I read the title!
I also love watching them 😂
'Anything is possible with a hot glue gun' Yes! Id love to see you cover your desk chair with that beautiful green velvet
Beautiful fabric. I like the organizational style of the fabric bible - very cool.

Wool is also my favourite! Happy holidays to you too ❤️☺️

I’m currently stuck halfway through a move and this title? I’m there… oh, you say you are basically me a week from now. If the fates smile time-wise
Wish you all the best luck, it’s worth in the end 😂❤️
We need the gold and black silk brocade 1890s evening gown in our lives!

Oh my gosh that sounds like such a fun project!! Time to start collecting onion skins 😂
That’s a really wonderful idea. I would love to be that organized. Goals

I need to get around to cataloguing my stash
Happy Sewing in the new year! :)
Loved looking through your stash. I need to sort mine now. Would love to see your chair done and the beautiful green velvet dress finished.
I'm not sure because the lighting probably don't show well the colours, but you could combine some of the ivory looking speciality fabrics to make a fantasy dress. It would have great texture.
Yes! I love combining textures in fantasy inspired dresses ☺️

the 17th century project sounds really interesting to watcvh. I have a huge stash of fabric myself, but it's sitting there, languishing.

You could use the grey wool cashmere for "will it dye"!!
You could number the boxes and note which box it's in, or just note which box is where. Quilters have it easier, it's nearly always cotton, so no type needed. Yes I would love to! But I found I had lacked in motivation by the time I got it all sorted 😂 a second phase to this project I think
I admire both your organization and your choice of fabrics, but true hoarders have hoards like old dragons...
So great to see your stash! Also this may be silly, but where did you get your sweater?? I have been searching for the perfect black knit sweater and yours looks like exactly what I have wanted!
Mine was just a plain H&M one I got in a sale a few years ago! Not much help I’m afraid 😥
One of the things I always wondering about when people talk about 'their stash'. Especially with historical/costuming. When you see a fabric on sale, that you love... how much do you get?
Do you mind sharing the store you order the white linen from?
Yes, I was wondering that too, and the wool on sale stores
Same question...
I was also wondering which shops have periodic sales on linen and wool!

@@CatsCostumery Thank you!
13:40-13:43 That was the dress I wish I could have bought! If you don't wear blues as much will you sell fabric from this bin?
Maybe! I’ll take a hard look at it because I’d rather the fabric was used than languishing in the closet ☺️
💜💜💜
Sure you could sew up that leg slit...or you could make a dress for your dream dnd character and that leg slit can show off a dagger strapped to your thigh and cool over the knee boots...
I like the way you think.
This sounds amazing 👀
Haaaa. I have. So. Much. Fabric. It is taking over and now I have fibre for spinning and a floor loom. I am drowning in stuff.
Do you have any recommendations for fabric or yarn shops in
London or Bath? I’m only going for a short time so can’t get around to all of England.
I usually shop at Goldhawk Road but it can be a bit overwhelming - there’s loads of shops there! Soho still has some older shops that are beautiful like the Cloth House, and Liberty is always amazing eye candy ☺️
Do a burn test on a little tiny scrap of your wool, then you can confirm its content.
Med ålder att would you have du kan göra full Victorian Winter out fett😅
Where do you get that linen deal?
I've had a lenght of Liberty silk crepe de chine in my stash for about 40 years. Still dont know what Im going to do with it,
I just want to.put my fabric away . That might be the next quote I frame.
✨🧵
If you are ever burgled and the only thing missing is fabric it's not me,😂 just joking. ❤
I'm not crazy about cutting the fabric swatches-seems a waste of time and fabric. What about photos? Also not as bulky as swatches. Especially if you want to do the catalog on a spreadsheet.
I've taken photos of my fabric to keep track of them. But making a spreadsheet? That's bloody genius! *opens excel*
