Importance of Looking Poor

  • The way you dress has an impact of how you are treated by others. However, have you though about dressing poor to your advantage? When dressing poor, sales associates may avoid you which may actually be a positive in some cases. Looking poor may also deter theft because you look like there is nothing to steal. Think about usage of how you dress as a tool to get the treatment from others that you are targeting.

The mugger might've settled for the phone. 1, you can't get blood out of a turnip and 2, leaving a man naked could attract too much attention. More risk, like $100+ in fines and other legal costs, and for what, $20 reward if the local consignment shop is generous?? The cheap/worn jeans and T-shirt concept is tried and true, though. This reminds me of a fun story my great uncle told me. He was a very decorated combat flyer in WW2 but never wanted to talk about the war and was very humble in
    general.
    Right after the war he went to college.
    He said although by then he was sick of the military that he went ahead anyway and signed up for ROTC.
    Apparently it offered some sort of additional credit.
    First day of training he showed up in a sweat suit instead of whatever he was supposed to be wearing.
    The person in charge, himself only a student thoroughly chewed out my uncle for 5 minutes as to what a disgrace he was and from now on he had better show up in proper uniform.
    My uncle didn’t say a word.
    Next day may uncle showed up in his real full USAAF uniform complete with Captains bars, medals, combat ribbons, everything.
    Upon seeing my uncle in full uniform, the hot shot in charge there turned pale and went silent.
    After that I think everyone left my uncle pretty much alone.

    I've noticed that people treat you different depending on the clothes you wear (cheap vs expensive). I like to wear or look poor because I can see clearly who are the genuine people versus the plastic people.
    I walked in my real estate agent office looking poor and asked to see the manager. The person asked me if I had an appointment. I replied "no". She said to come back and make an appointment. I said it will only be for a brief moment. She said "the manager is in a meeting." I said "I'll wait." She said "The manager is very busy and not sure when the meeting will finish. You can check our website online, book appointments, fill in forms for rent, auctions, etc..." So I stood there thinking for a moment in silence... She said "are you looking to rent, all the details online are very easy to follow." I replied... "No... I'm the landlord."... I counted, 3mins the manager came to see me.

      Imagine if you were the manager or boss and met with every single small fish coming in the door and answered every phone call. You’d never get stuff done. That’s her job - to screen calls and visitors. If you aren’t forthcoming about who you are, why should you expect him to make time to see you? You make time for family, not every person in the world. That doesn’t mean you’re a bad person for favoring your family. In business, clients are your family.

This mistake could be easily avoided if the receptionist just asked who she was before judging what she was there for based on her look. Of course the manager can't see everyone, but asking doesn't seem too hard or too time consuming.

    My mom, who grew up in a blew collar family in post WWII France, always said "Neatness and cleanliness are the only luxury the poor have". She could take simple furniture and cheap yards of fabric and make a home out of that. Or look put together with a few simple items of supermarket clothing. She never allowed any member of the family to go out with holes in their clothes. We would sit down on week-ends and she would teach me how to mend clothes. Today, our family is more affluent, but I always kept that philosophy. I find it offensive to suggest that poor people are automatically dirty and sloppy. Wearing jeans with holes in them is something the rich do (and they will pay a ridiculous amount of money to buy jeans that have been distressed for them). If I see someone wearing a worn shirt from a technology trade show and torn jeans, I will assume that it is some rich guy on his way to Lowe's to buy supplies for a week-end project on his half a million dollar home.

      I respect your high standards. At the same rate, I think there's something to be said for appealing to stereotypes if you live in a rough area. I've personally experienced the difference between looking stereotypically well-off VS stereaotypically poor n a few areas I've lived in. Enough to know that I feel like looking my best, but it tends to attract gold diggers and/or criminals. Enough to know that when I dress down, I tend to attract more down to Earth, friendly and genuine types of people. Problem is, I've out grown my lust for gold-diggers, I prefer honest people, I don't want to be compelled to defend myself against criminals again, but I also prefer nicer clothes, and either type of outfit tends to cost about the same. It's a catch-22. Fortunately, I got used to dressing down to some extent when/where necessary, found a place to live that I like, and the most crime we get here tends to be bike thieves, shoplifters, pedophile creepers (still a significant issue, but likely not for long if a recently busted local pedo cop gets ousted), casual drug users who don't usually bother anybody but themselves and their buddies, and telephone tough guys who don't do much except spread rumors and make threats they never seem to follow through on. I'm guessing you live in an area you at least perceive to be safe?

One day I was at grocery self checkouts and the attendant gave me a package of pita bread saying it was free. She singled me out from 4 or 5 others there, I thought it was weird but took it anyways. Once I got back to my car it dawned on me I likely looked poor and in need. Staff have also looked suspiciously at me too thinking I’m likely to steal which is annoying, but I love the sweater.

    A downside to dressing poor includes while you're shopping: some people think you're a thief. I've been approached and accused of stealing three or four times already, and it's always when I'm wearing sweats and a t-shirt.

I don’t think it’s okay for women, especially women of color, to dress down in some instances because people feel like they can mistreat, abuse, and verbally attack an unkempt woman. The only negative I see is individuals thinking that I am wealthy and stuck up ( I’m on my way to being wealthy through savings and investments though.)

    When I was in my teens and early twenties, I dressed in such good taste that people tended to think I was RICH when really I was poor. This was NAUSEATING! After that happened for a while, I decided to almost always dress somewhat DOWN.
    I also learned to LOOK at how others are dressed. Rich people often dress down (even sometimes on dates!), but if you look at them closely you can see they're rich. And, yes, you can also spot people like I used to be: those of good taste and seemingly fine clothes who are really dirt poor.

My whole life it was never a problem, until I moved to London, and some shop owners started acting like I might steal something. I was even asked to leave one shop one time because I took a few minutes to decide what I wanted to buy. Another shop owner said, "you know, you don't have to come here every day." I found it pretty shocking that people would judge me that way... Anyway, that's life. They lost a paying customer through being too judgemental I guess.

      Predators go after the prey. Simple as that... It works whether the predator is a hungry cat picking among the mice, the lion choosing among gazelle in a herd, or a mugger picking out the right target in a crowd on the street...
      The cat tries for the fatter slower moving mouse... He won't chase the dog for food, because that pit-bull will just hand him his ass.
      The lion will choose a slower, easier gazelle that still offers meat. They don't usually even go after hippos because they're so dangerous... Like the cat vs dog, the hippos have a far better chance of handing even a group of lions their collective ass.
      The mugger measures folks on the street, by their clothes, the things they carry, and by their posture, body language, stride... SO wearing shabby clothes, and behaving like a rich kid "slummin' " in the bad part of town is an easy way to get killed. Moping along like the rest of the "used up" masses while in decent, but not particularly good clothes tends to work better...
      In either direction (finance to motif) dress too pretentiously and you risk being caught at it. So the "dressing down" helps, but only so much. Sooner or later, you may have to return to your car, and the only high-dollar car in the city is definitely still going to bite you in the metaphoric ass. :o)

    My boyfriend did this when we traveled to Italy in March. I dressed like I normally do (not super nice, but not ratty either). Beggars followed me around asking for money, but they took one look at my boyfriend and didn't pay any attention to him. I may need to try this if we travel outside the country again. Saying no to beggars in other countries always makes me feel bad, especially when I travel to Peru. :\ My parents grew up in poverty in Peru, so it hits a bit too close to home.
    By the way, my boyfriend and I also apply this strategy to choosing which car to drive to certain places. We both bought our cars cheap with cash, but his car definitely looks nicer than mine. He has a 2004 350z, and I have a 2003 Accord that looks rather plain (also has a few minor dents and scratches on the bumper from the previous owner). Whenever we drive downtown or to other sketchy areas, we take my car because there's much less of a chance that someone will break into my car.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For those things you can just switch its really great to choose the attire and car appropriate to where you are going. Sometimes you don't want to draw too much attention and other time, well, maybe you want to draw as much attention as you can.

    That's why when I travel, I try to keep in mind the city/country I'm going to and look up what the culture is like so I can fit in. I think the key is dressing for the right occasion. If you want great treatment at luxury stores or restaurants dress the part. If you want to be left alone, dress that part too. But I think the best default is jeans and a shirt (plain solid colors). It's an in between look. You never really know what's behind all that. 👍😋

    I generally agree with you, when I lived in Canada and the UK I always dressed down and no one bothered me, which is what I wanted. However, I moved to Asia and found that dressing down worked against me more often than not as an Asian person, unfortunately, we seem to be much more conscious and judgemental about appearance. But as you said you have to be tactical about what you wear, but miss just wearing old t-shirts and shorts all the time :)

I kept the conversation going trying to "place" in my mind where I knew him from. No success. Then on the way home I remembered that at 4:55 pm that same day my sales director had handed me a document. I didn't have time to read it. But I did glance at it. It was this guy's resume.

    Great way of thinking about how to dress! My husband and I run a mobile clothes bank where we give clothes away for free to low income areas, and homeless shelters in the winter. We are lower income ourselves, both being on disability, but have nice clothes because of the clothes bank. We have found that in certain areas we go into, we dress down quite a bit, so that the people we serve will feel more comfortable to come talk to us, and know they can relate to us, and us to them….and we can. We definitely know what it’s like to be in lack, but thankfully, now we have plenty, and a way to share it!

    I like this old trick very much. It's good to dress down when you buy a car, walk through an open house, or shopping in general. It throws sales people off the scent and allows you to relax until you are ready to ask questions. Be careful with your shoes. Expensive shoes will give you away.
    Stupidest thing to do? Go to a mechanic or general electronic repair shops dressed nicely and let them know you are a MD. Shut that noise down!

I have money, I just don't like spending money on things I don't care about. in the last year I might of spent a couple hundred bucks not counting underwear or socks on clothes. It works great when going to car dealerships, no annoying sales people. Although, when visiting some stores I've had security follow me around; if I'm in the mood and they're annoying me I'll walk fast, run, or sometimes even hide if the environment allows it - I'd never steal anything, just giving them what they want, which is to make their job a bit exciting.

      Years ago when I was looking for a vehicle we went to a Toyota dealership to check out new vehicles. Initially we were ignored for several minutes as the sales agents assisted people that came after us. Eventually one person came to us and when I mentioned wanting to look at a Tundra he started talking about used vehicles. When I asked to see a new one he showed us where they were on the lot then said he had to go back to help some other customer... and he never came back. Due to that experience I replaced my Camry with a car from a different manufacturer.

Its all about perception. I have enough money that I dress how I want regardless but I have been doing this trick for years. I also dress down around some of my poor friends or family... I also commute in a old beat up truck almost daily, I love this truck though, best truck ever (even better than my brand new expensive truck) I don't even lock the doors BUT Often Times I may have 5k cash in the center console and I think who the heck would ever thing theres anything of value in this truck and laugh..... Hahahahahahahahaha. Family should always comes first! If a member of my family needs money or anything at all, i give what i can. They wouldn't ask if they weren't desperate. Due to the downturn in the job market and the redundancies that are rife at the moment in the North East, many families have had to pull together at this time of financial uncertainty On that note, an easy solution for anyone with an expensive car to hide, is to sell the car and buy a bicycle. :)

    • @kevineusebio
      @kevineusebio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Sakurakuro It depends. Some people leech of the more successful person in the family and guilt you to giving in on the account that you're "family". You can keep "helping", but in the end, you're just enabling them. This happens way too often these days. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

    So here's a story my dad told me once. He was working at a shipyard and in this case they were at an exhibition trying to sell a yacht.
    He saw some poorly dressed guy go up to the their competition and he was flat-out turned down. He wasn't even allowed on the boat.
    He than came to them and was shown the boat. He then left and when he came back a bit later, bought the thing in cash.
    That'll teach you to judge people by their looks :P

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This happens a lot it seems. And what's surprising is that this is pretty typical. People judge others by how they look. As a sales, it's understandable because they are trying to optimize their time so that they get the most sales for their effort. Hence they try to not spend any that appears to not bring them sales. So they really need to figure out if some dude in rage really has money to spend or not.
