I love collecting all these old VHS tapes of these railroads. So much history that should not be lost!

Enlightening commentary, unique color video makes this a thoroughly enjoyable film about the Northern Pacific Railroad!

My father was a forester for the Northern Pacific Railroad and later the Burlington Northern. He was put in charge of the short lived NP chipmill west of Cle Elum.
Earlier, when he was a forest manager at Newport Washington, we road the North Coast Limited from Spokane to Chicago to visit relatives.
Great video! Brings back a lot of memories.👍

7:49 According to the amtrak site the Empire Builder is scheduled even faster at 38h 15m. But I think the current route is a GN/NP hybrid.

    Filmed from a Slumbercoach?

Slumbercoaches had no frontal viewing from the roofline. Perhaps a Budd short-dome.

Sorry for not being clear. I meant pictures taken from the upper part of the dutch door. Should be the car between the two domecars. It is clearly a Budd product and having the vestibule at the rear of the car I assumed it was a either a coach-which I don't belive because of it's position in the train- or a Slumbercoach. Most of the standard Budd Sleepers where running vestibule forward. At least what I noticed.
Maybe someone can help with more information
      Regards Frank

@ich-d1h This long quote is from the book, "The Vista-Dome North Coast Limited" by William R. Kuebler, Jr.
"When the Slumbercoach was added to the North Coast Limited in 1959, the NP placed it between the mail dormitory car and the first dome coach. There it stayed until summer 1965, when it began "migrating" toward the rear of the train. The Slumbercoach appeared just ahead of the Traveler's Rest car for a very brief time in 1965, then between the Traveler's Rest and diner. In the summer of 1966, it often appeared between the Traveler's Rest and diner. This was not consistent, however; there were times during both periods when it appeared behind the mail-dormitory car as usual. Finally, in spring 1967, when the observation cars were removed from service, the Slumbercoach found it's final spot on the NP's North Coast Limited--just behind the dining car."
      Hope this helps you.

@ich-d1h Glad I remembered I could help. I did not read if they ran the car with the vestibule towards the end of train or not. Sorry.

The train has a dome car so the video can't be any earlier than 1954.

This is was filmed around 1970. Four railroads of the northwest (SP&S, GN, NP and Burlington Route of Chicago) merged in 1970, prior to Amtrak being formed. The best two clues are the full length dome car painted in Burlington Northern green with hockey stick, and the Boeing 727 aircraft at Boeing Field.

From the skyline of Seattle this is not 1950. This is more like 1970 something because of the Columbia/Seafirst Tower.

Be thankful the video was not in black and white. What sound weaknesses were you unhappy with? Not many folks had professional color and sound equipment back then. Sound from elsewhere was usually added on during editing.
