What's your source on this? Apple devices are usually pretty standards compliant, but unlike most other manufacturers, they're too cheap/lazy to properly test or build proper safety features for devices that don't rigorously adhere to standards even though such devices are extremely common and still usable provided the PC maker builds in work arounds.
After Covid, people will go and test their USB devices in the Apple stores in order not to brick their own computers. This will work until Apple blocks the access to the ports.
Haha 😂 I sure hope nothing goes truly portless, as hardline is always more reliable and lower energy usage. But I’m super old-school, coming from an audio engineering perspective. 😉 WiFi is super convenient, but it’s a waste to blast all that energy into the radio band. And inductive charging is highly inefficient-typically a minimum of 30% of the energy is wasted. If you get power from coal, that’s ~30% more coal burned by using the device. It was bad enough that they eliminated the 1/8” audio jack, though they did easily clog with pocket lint. Now no dedicated power connector. And my phone’s lightning port already seems to be having some intermittent connectivity issues, 2-years in. But I got an M1 laptop and I gotta say-not needing an extra power adapter with a quality dock means I have a reliable, single-cable connection to everything on my desk, which is awesome. And still have a power brick for another favored home station. (Other people might also use it for travel.) The convenience of quickly relocating because of the single cable to dock is undeniable. Too bad they’ll probably require a second cable for a second external display, assuming the imminent successor models support two external displays at all.

I've always hated how Apple gets so many things right that almost all other companies just fail at, but at the same time gets few of the most important aspects wrong making all the good things pointless
if there's one upside to longevity of their products its that they're very reliable both in software as well as physically and mechanically so the chance of needing to replace a bad part is very rare. that being said its still no excuse to solder every component to the board

Some guys, trying to make Linux work on the M1 Macs, started to reverse engineer the M1 architechture as much as possible. They’ve found out, that the SSD drives although use the NVMe protocol to communicate, the SSD is not connected to the SoC using PCIe. They mention some “direct-mapped” layout for the storage. If I understand correctly, this means that the SSD is part of the memory address space of the CPU. That could explain a few things: 1: The disapperance of the T2 chip with the M1, as in later Intel Macs, this chip was used as the disk controller. 2: The soldered-on SSD form factor is now seems as a nessesity, as direct-mapping the SSD would be impossible via PCIe. 3: The excessive wear of the SSDs can be easily explained if the CPU can just simply address the drive and use it as it would be DRAM. (For example, when using a page file, you can work now with the paged memory if it would be in the RAM, at the cost of slower speed, and more data written to the drive. Speed is not a big concern here I think, a modern NVMe drive can easily perform as well as a DDR2 RAM would back in the day, but SSDs don’t like this much write rates this high this fast…) If it is really designed this way, this is the next level of planned obselence. These machines will KILL their SSDs in max 3-4 years. Not from malfunction, not from software bugs, but from the way that the architechture is designed.
To point 2: It's not a neccessity to have soldered on ssd chips regardless. Sure, you couldn't use a regular PCIe interface with that architecture. But if Apple was willing to, they could've designed replacable chips with some form of connector. The problem is, as always, that Apple doesn't care about anything other than profit margin.
At least you can still replace the battery, with a soldered ssd you need a guy like Louis (Paul)... And even then the T2 chip might complain and refuse to work.

Doesn’t mean it’s not important, accepting that Macs absolutely compromise on those things and taking in mind the good things about it is a fair decision basis. People needing repair ability and upgrades just shouldn’t buy Macs since Apple is one of the worst companies in that field. Different people need laptops with different compromises easy as that
10 years is great. My Lenovo Y510p lasted 8 years, and I was satisfied. If a computer doesn't last at least 5 it better have been cheap, or there is something wrong with the design.
@@jhoughjr1 I was responding to OP, I didn't see your message. Some devices can indeed catch fire because of a faulty design. When I bought my MacBook Pro back in 2015 I only had it for a few weaks and my charger made a loud 'POP' w/ a flash out of nowhere. Charger was dead. Judging by the sound, flash and smell a capacitor blew out for some reason. I took it back to the store and instead of them simply giving me a replacement charger, they had to 'send it in for repairs' or something dumb. I had an important exam later that day and I couldn't work without a working charger. Great customer service, right? I ended up buying some little MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter plug from a different stores that sells refurbished Apple products. I used my old charger to overcome the issue. Needless to say I'm glad that I switched back to PC, so I can just fix my own stuff instead of having to rely on Apple's 'customer service' ;-)
@@jhoughjr1 In the past Apple products were a great choice for professionals because of their reliability. It's been the industry standard for music production for a good reason: it simply worked. Apples computers gave superior performance both in their efficiency (sofware/hardware optimization) and their stability/reliability. Some of the older machines still do a great job, for sure. However, there's been this push towards putting all kinds of dumb extra stuff in these machines that nobody needs, bad thermal design, bad overal product design and both the stability and lifespan of these products is suffering. Steve Jobs was a crook, but at least he overcharged you for a solid product. After he died and Tim Cook took over, there seems to have been a shift in the company's focus. Prices have gone up, lifespan and reliability have gone down. In the meantime, both hardware and software have been getting better optimization for Windows. Now we're at a point where many music industry professionals are switching to PC because Apple simply doesn't offer something that PC doesn't, except a familiar OS. It's just not worth the upcharge anymore. The 'Apple Tax' used to be worth it, but at this point I strongly doubt I'll ever go back to Apple.
Because most of their user base won’t use those ports anyway. Like, I love my cabled internet connection, but I understand why they are removing ethernet ports from laptops... Even usb-sticks are now really obsolete.
@@TH-camAIbot Daily, dozens of times. Music equipment, memory cards, cameras, cd rom drive, extra monitors, iems, mouse, gaming peripherals, wired arctis pro headset, wired internet connection, vr setup, the list goes on.
For the people saying that consumers should know what the devices are meant for and therefore Apple is not at fault, I would like to point out that a large portion of the marketing for the M1-equipped products was about how great they are for video rendering and editing, which is about as write-intensive as workloads get. So claiming that it's not intended for this many writes isn't a valid argument. For the people who will still say that most professional video editors will be rendering off of an external server, keep in mind that Apple doesn't offer any configurations with LAN faster than 1 gigabit, and the lack of thunderbolt ports means that 10 gigabit ethernet isn't an option. And as we saw in this video, a third party ethernet adapter isn't a good idea, either.
These talks of yours work very well to prevent me from upgrading the gear I have and that works just fine. iPhone8, Macbook Air from 2017. I'll just ride them out for all they are worth.
The tragic is that the clicking sound was a short circuit somewhere, I wish it was a breaker. How are there people still buying Mac Desktop computer or Laptops is incomprehensible is worse that being fixed on your dose (sorry I went a bit far)

This video just sold me on going with a different laptop. I was concerned with the RAM caching on the SSD but didn't realize how much it would actually write to the drive. Only issue is that almost all laptops besides Apple are backordered for 1-3 months and I need something quicker than that....and as always, I learned something.
@@alexbloomberg4221 So, means its exactly both the comment and Louis said: the machine is faster. Which is to be expected, it would be sad if the thing would be slower or has has less capabilities than the previous generation.
Before the M1 you people couldn't shut up about how horrid the performance and thermals was on Macs. Apple not only fixes both issues but now exceeds even gaming laptops in performance and now you brush it off like its some 5% generational improvement that happens whenever Intel releases a new 14nm+++++++++ cpu.

Yeah.. In 2016 I bought an old computer that had a regular MB with an i5 4460. I put it in a different case, added a gtx 1060 and that was it for about a year. Then I wanted a better cpu so I bought an i7 4470 from a different country (still in the EU) for 200€. It came in a padded letter like packaging (you probably know what I mean. ) The only new things about the computer are: The case, the power supply, more ram and an ssd. I am even using 2 of the old HDDs. One is a 2 TB WD HDD that stores everything. Whoever tells me that they are afraid of buying second hand components or computers I just laugh in their face. Of course, it is a risk, not to be taken lightly. But still, you buy old cars which are basically old moving parts. Modern electronics are good enough. If I am not satisfied, I will just buy a better GPU because CPUs are good enough. I have a 1080p monitor so even if I buy a second hand gtx 1070 I will be fine.
@@podolanko7 Ah forgot to mention that: Upgraded over the years the main drives also to SSD. Of course that gave a big, still cheap boost. Totally agree with you - the only thing I bought new back was the board and the RAM, because that I couldn`t re-use. The CPU was back then already three years old and I got it new, but discounted. Put all my old TB in that machine and my old 660. w/o greedy miners 😂 I'd upgraded my GPU much earlier, so I did it when mining went temporarily downhill some years ago. Since I don't need to edit that many videos for work and most shooters are still running fine @max (not ultra, but often close) and 40 - 90 fps... Was so "shocked" when I, with that attitude, wanted to replace the logicboard of my g/f (5 years old!) Mac: "WTF, I could build a new machine for that!". And how cheap, if you don't count the labour, the replacement of some chips (corrosion of LCD power unit) was.
No, you’ll be buying a whole new logic board, which is almost as expensive as a new machine, which will therefore seem pointless, so you buy a new machine anyway. The logic board on my last macbook air died. Could not afford to replace it, so I waited another couple years with a machine that kept crashing until I had scraped enough money together to build a hackintosh 🤷♀️ I’m generally pleased that they finally solved the heat issues with M1, but the soldered on ssd is a big fat no for me!
@@LillySchwartz Why, you can resolder new chips on board. It is doable even at home with proper equipment and experience. I bet that there will be many companies offer that, but.. When it will fail? This is exactly the contrarian view point I was looking for when it comes to the M1 Macs. I am torn, man. As a video editor, final cut on the M1 looks as flawless as I can imagine video editing to be (at the just-passed-amateur level that I consider my skillsets to be in). Even from a non video editing standpoint, I am blown away by the battery and power consumption stats. But then I see this, and I remember why I have a love hate relationship with Apple. All they have to do is to signal an intent to decrease e-waste by making upgrading simple with their product architecture, and I will happily jump to their corner. As it is, I am happy with my patchwork of eco-systems that I use in order to get my computing work done, instead of just relying on Apple to do everything for me. Thanks for doing what you do, Louis.
Buy it 20 hour battery life and barely any fan noise is more than worth it. Ssd will last a long time unless you’re moving terabytes of data a month. WiFi is super convenient, but it’s a waste to blast all that energy into the radio band.

You need just screwdriver to dissasemble MBA. You can, for sure reapir it if drive will fail, you just have to replace whole board, which is really tiny in MBA M1. So even that legislation is not applied yet and we do not know if it will in future, they are ready
they get creative like with lightning (which they don't wanna abandon because of the very profitable licensing model of it)
EU is forcing all devices to have a USB (C) connector in a nearer future so what is apple heading for?
no connector at all;)
@@CinceTheDay I kind of wish the EU also prohibited the devices from being portless (so that apple would HAVE to put a usb c port on the devices)
@@pineappleroad They probably just didn't think of that when the started working on the law. But honestly at some point I gotta say, it's not the EU's duty to make Apple more user friendly.
If this law comes and every other company except apple uses the USB c port for the phones in the EU then the only resolution of that can be: Don't buy from apple:P
@@jirikocman if tiny equals inexpensive I’d agree with you. But a $700 repair on a $1200 computer should not qualify as acceptably repairable.
That could explain a few things:
1: The disapperance of the T2 chip with the M1, as in later Intel Macs, this chip was used as the disk controller.
Speed is not a big concern here I think, a modern NVMe drive can easily perform as well as a DDR2 RAM would back in the day, but SSDs don’t like this much write rates this high this fast…)
If it is really designed this way, this is the next level of planned obselence. These machines will KILL their SSDs in max 3-4 years. Not from malfunction, not from software bugs, but from the way that the architechture is designed.
Thank you for this deep insight into how Apple designs it's products.
Do you have any link for this?
Interesting! Do you have any sources or links to this?
To point 2: It's not a neccessity to have soldered on ssd chips regardless. Sure, you couldn't use a regular PCIe interface with that architecture. But if Apple was willing to, they could've designed replacable chips with some form of connector. The problem is, as always, that Apple doesn't care about anything other than profit margin.
the ssd wear issues appear to be a software issue - not actually the ssd wearing fast

i still can't get over how they thought a spiderweb of wires dongles docks hubs and peripherals all over a desk was a good way to go
Because most of their user base won’t use those ports anyway.
Like, I love my cabled internet connection, but I understand why they are removing ethernet ports from laptops... Even usb-sticks are now really obsolete.
It's the desk-wide web!
(Instead of the world-wide web.)
while I agree that there should be more thunderbolt ports Ill ask you this:
How often do you plug anything into your laptop nowadays?
@@TH-camAIbot Daily, dozens of times. Music equipment, memory cards, cameras, cd rom drive, extra monitors, iems, mouse, gaming peripherals, wired arctis pro headset, wired internet connection, vr setup, the list goes on.
I love your vids man. It's always pretty much "Oh, ok. Here's something I know absolutely nothing about".
Video title in 1 year: "Histerical: My client's M1 is litteraly dead after I plugged my usb-c ammeter"
Apple Engineers: "needs more solder"
Okay, thats actually sad. So much potential but so little customer care.
"good f'ing job!!!"
priceless.
The tragic is that the clicking sound was a short circuit somewhere, I wish it was a breaker.
How are there people still buying Mac Desktop computer or Laptops is incomprehensible is worse that being fixed on your dose (sorry I went a bit far)
You understand it wrong, it's time bomb!
But if you like MacOS youre stuck with it, or you can go the hackintosh way, wich is a f* headache
Consoomers:
"Wait! Apple is becoming even bigger garbage?"
"Shut up and take my money!"
The vacuum bagged plushies in the back make me anxious
Will you make a Framework laptop hands on when/if you get one?
He probably would because he supports right to repair
Depends on what they wind up saying about schematic availability for users or technicians. If they say no then they're the same as everyone else. We'll see.
@@rossmanngroup The same as everyone else, but _with a decent screen_.
This video just sold me on going with a different laptop. I was concerned with the RAM caching on the SSD but didn't realize how much it would actually write to the drive. Only issue is that almost all laptops besides Apple are backordered for 1-3 months and I need something quicker than that....and as always, I learned something.
Lol review: this year’s computer is faster than last year’s computer.
Apple Marketing in a nutshell: "This years model is better than last year's model!"
Me: "Well thank you captain obvious!"
It can edit 8k videos.
"It dies faster than the previous model!"
Props to Apple for having the courage to add a 3.5 mm jack on the M1.
there hasn't been a single Apple computer over the last decades without a 3.5mm. I know these are inconvenient facts for the blind Apple haters, I know facts are in general hard to grasp for you, but you have to be strong and hold tight with me on this one.

@@xmlthegreat here we go - inconvenient facts. You confirm this again by saying they removed it from "their products", while this is simply not true for a lot of them. As I said, for people like you it is very hard to accept facts that don't fit their own delusional views.
You are the best, all the other youtubers are in love with the M1's... all the reviews are exactly the same. I've watched and read many reviews and haven't heard about the USB-C hub issue until now and this is a major issue, an actual "applegate".
Then you should have read reviews on forums like reddit
My mans starting to be like those sportscasters that owe their entire career to the team they spent years criticizing
MacUser: "I settle for Apple, because it's despite to Windows and Linux a reliant system." - also: "Who uses a PC x years old!?"
Me on my 8 years old Workstation/Gaming PC (OCed 4770K/1070/16GB) still capable running everything at max w/ minor expense upgrades: "I dunno?" Not to speak of that Toshiba Satellite for vintage gaming from the stone age...
Oh, and the reason why I ended up at @Louis Rossmann: Because the MacBook Pro of my g/f died - and I needed some (hard to find) advice on board repair.
I was using a 3rd gen i5 until about 6 months ago... On my 2nd gen era motherboard.
Still got a GTX 960... Was aiming to buy a 3070 by Christmas... Should have bought the 1660 Super when I had the chance. 😟
@@tin2001 Yeah, that'll be a long time until a 3070 and others will be in store anywhere.😂 Maybe try winning the lottery first, better channces. And you won't mind then to buy one off some scalpers/miners.
Yeah.. In 2016 I bought an old computer that had a regular MB with an i5 4460. I put it in a different case, added a gtx 1060 and that was it for about a year. Then I wanted a better cpu so I bought an i7 4470 from a different country (still in the EU) for 200€. It came in a padded letter like packaging (you probably know what I mean. )
The only new things about the computer are: The case, the power supply, more ram and an ssd.
And how cheap, if you don't count the labour, the replacement of some chips (corrosion of LCD power unit) was.
best technical channel ever
so do we replace the whole machine when the ssd dies. sounds like a massive fu to the environment on apples part.
My MBA with 8GB RAM does about 20-30GB wirtes per day, same as my PC with 32GB did. So even with reserve I talking about 12TBW/year with average 150TBW guarantee on todays SSDs, it will last for 12 years. And with reach that TBW it does not stop work. I bought 7yrs old Windows refubrished laptop, was running with 4GB RAM so it swaps a lot. And hey 170TBW on 128GB SSD which still runs pretty well.
I do not mid if drive in MBA M1 will last "only" 12years, I guess 12 years from now, it will not exists - refubrished or recycled.
For supre if someone will take that machine and will use it as NAS cache, for server, for heavy work with big files (transfering lot of data) or will do a lot of multitasking with memory heavy apps, yes, it can fail quckly, same as many other machines with similar workload
@@jirikocman Did you watch the video? Apparently the 8GB model swaps like crazy under normal circumstances without heavy loads. This is precisely the problem with it. As for re-soldering chips: Again, did you watch the video? If the company producing these chips is not allowed to sell them to anyone but Apple - a likely scenario - there won't be any chips available to re-solder even if someone has the equipment to solder SMD components. I do lots of electronics DIY projects and even I don't have a reflow oven or a heat gun that gets hot enough. I tried soldering SMD stuff with a soldering iron once and it was just disastrous 😬None of my SSDs have failed so far, but I make sure it doesn't swap like crazy.
@@jirikocman Your comment made me feel a bit relieved about my M1 Air.
@@jirikocman apple new MacBooks are junk and not all ssd gonna last 12 years that's the better case scenario and soldering at home chips is a big no people will have to use usb name and load from that...
I am so depressed about this subject. I depend on the tools of the OS. I like the experience of the OS. I have never liked the hardware experience for decades.
I have not had a good experience with an SSD on an old HP laptop that had Ubuntu. I have been lazy about coding. I try to imitate my Mac experience. I realize that I must “Think Differently” when it comes to Linux distros.
I am looking to go back on eBay for a Thinkpad but no Unbuntu. Maybe Mint ot Pop!_OS.
Thank you LR for your insightful videos over the years.
Think Different part killed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought that M1 Macbook is “incredible value” that is the mantra of EVERY BIG CHANNELS on youtube! And no one talking about this!!
The same people that says Mac will last longer than a PC!
Fact is that for 99% people it does last longer and than most pc’s heck im using a 9 year old imac. My pc has been dead and unusable for a few years. I dont have an m1 mac but it does seem to be good value for the price. I have been looking for a new windows machine for a wile now and honestly havent found one that ticks all the boxes. Battery life + power.
A lot of fear mongering. iPhones and iPad have soldered on memory and they last years on end. Plus if you look around you can find the m1 pro for £1000 sealed.
I'm on the same boat bro
Thanks for that thoughtful input!
Hoping you will be making more videos on the current New Rent situation, particularly how the Eviction Moratorium is affecting the market now for both Tenants and Landlords. I'm doing all I can to educate the public but we need more people like you with a large audience to speak up. PS, Apple sucks
I don't think anyone has any misunderstandings about what kind of a clusterf**k is headed for America in this department, this is an obvious problem that everyone can see no matter their values, ideology, politics, etc. It's fun to watch Louis rant about things, but landlords, tenants, banks, politicians, homeowners, workers, the unemployed...everyone knows this is about to be a huge problem, there isn't an awareness problem on this issue that I can see. The problem is that there's no easy solution that will make everyone happy, lots of people will be screwed from every group I've mentioned.
@@uttcftptid4481 Its already become a big problem and has become an issue for many who talk about it. I lost about 2/3rds of my subscribers since I started talking about the Eviction Moratorium. Louis can get away with talking about it more, because his audience loves his rants
@@NickSakalis yeah Louis has done something that most TH-cam creators can't get away with, and that is build a channel that covers many unrelated topics, and he does it in a way that attracts more people than he drives away. If you've dedicated your own channel to one certain thing and built an audience that is only there for that thing, trying to include other topics can have huge affects on audience retention. You'll drive away some, and attract others who are interested in the new topic, but won't care about your main videos. I'm sorry you lost so many subs, perhaps those people subbed to your channel because you were offering videos that let them escape from having to think about the real world problems, and if that's the case, bringing up those problems they were enjoying not have to think about for a few minutes can be detrimental.
My channel started as a ridiculous variety show so discussing other topics doesn't affect it. It really is ridiculous that this has 1.53 million subscribers, should be 10-20k max.

Why I have never bought a laptop in a nutshell. I discovered how reliable having a built desktop computer is a long time ago.
@Adam A-K if you say so, i’d much rather use a very specific device for what I’m doing on the go. Ie: an Actual camera for pictures and videos. A Voice recorder for Voice capture, etc. I find less goes wrong if it’s kept simple.
I still use my 2015 MacBook Pro (13 inches) I just ordered a 512Gb fledgling ssd and will be installing it. I hate not being able to upgrade my own property
