I still think that the Volvo that Roger Moore drove pre-Bond as The Saint has a certain cachet that no Bond car has had. Probably nobody else thinks so.

I had the E39 M5 when these Z8's came out. They didn't sell well and started hitting the used market for around $75k. My M5 was worth around $45k at the same time so wife didn't think another $30k for same engine, same drivetrain, and two less seats made sense. She's an ex wife now.
I worked at the dealership when the Z8's came out and we presold everyone we got at sticker price. We were one of the only dealerships in the South to sell them at list. None of them were bought locally and after they were PDI'd a truck took them to Florida. Sticker was around $127k. The real Z8 owners diss them but I like the Alpina Z8 a lot more with the regular V8 and automatic. It reminded me a lot of my old C2 Corvette with 454. Forgot to mention that I was the PDI (Predelivery Inspection) guy at the dealership so drove everything that came through the doors. Glad Hoovie is getting rid of those awful chrome wheels. I still have a set of the Alpina wheel covers that were fitted to the cars for transport protection. They were attached to the wheels with tie wraps.
@@pclayton5063 Bought mine from Brahman in Palm Beach. They did allow me to get the M5 for msrp but it took a bit of persuasion.

With respect, your videos are too good and well-regarded for you to need to post misleading thumbnails, such as saying it broke on the 500 mile drive home. The couple of things you noted - TPMS warning light, bad trunk struts, and improperly functioning gas cap release - don’t rise to the level of severity inferred by your thumbnail, which makes it sound like you were marooned on the side of the road.
You make great videos and don’t need to start sounding like Scotty Kilmer to attract viewers.
That aside, congrats on purchasing such a landmark BMW. It looks great, and perhaps it’s one even the Wizard won’t mind servicing, no disrespect to the Ninja intended.
We enjoyed your work on the Barrett-Jackson auction. You added much needed humor to the event and significantly enhanced the information provided to the viewers. You obviously possess a vast depth of knowledge on exotic vehicles. 3 of the top 10 cars that I have had the pleasure of owning and driving quite a lot:
1 Silver Alpina Z8, 1 Black Z8 and a Black 850 CSI... all incredible drivers. Smooth, fast and stunning cars.
CHP pulled me over in the Silver Z8 in San Ramon California--I was running over 130 @ midnight--they didn't know what the car was--after a 15 minute tutorial, I was released to go to BlackHawk and count my blessings..
Nice to see this video--brings back great memories.
The Lotus is my favorite Bond car. The Aston is a very close second.

At a time they depreciated to very low levels. I had a chance to buy a 2002 Z8 hooptie (many many issues) with an accompanying 2001 parts car that had been flipped over and wrecked for $32,000. I passed it up at the time due to other financial obligations. It's one of the few automotive regrets I have at this point.

I love cars. I’ve never been bitterly jealous of any car you’ve bought, until now. The Z8 has been my dream car since that Bond movie. I got a 1/10 scale model of it in 2002, and has been displayed in my various rooms over the years. Never forgotten. One of the most beautiful modern cars ever produced - but having experienced enough 90’s-2000’s BMWs, I think I will cross it off my bucket list.
Hoovie, Pierce Brosnan drove the Z8 in "The World is not Enough." He drove a BMW 750 in "Tomorrow Never Dies." It was the car that had missiles in the roof, the reinflating tires, and the ability to drive the car with a Nokia phone remote control. It was the car he drove off of a parking garage into an Avis rental car office.

Funny how AAA is different in each state. AAA Premium/Gold (whatever they call it) offers a 200 mile tow in Texas. As I own 3 Fiats I have definitely made sure to have that top plan.

The first Bond movie, Dr. No, came out in 1962, *_three_* years before the Astrodome opened. In the movie, which was a low-budget epic, 007 drove a Sunbeam Alpine! Since it was filmed in Jamaica, a lot of mundane British cars also appeared such as the Vauxhall Velox, Ford Consul, Ford Anglia and Standard Ensign, all of these genuine Hoopties. IMHO, the Z8 is one of the most beautiful BMW's ever, along with the 1971-75 3.0CS and, of course, the 507. Great purchase Hoovie!
Texas seems like a gold mine for old BMWs. The last 3 additions to my collection have all been from TX. And they’ve all been driven back to ATL without any (major) issues. Congrats good sir!!!

I made a 500+ mile round trip today to buy a car. I wore my Car Trek t-shirt and a guy at a gas station asked me if I worked for the show! I told him I was just a fan. He was too and we chatted about the series for few minutes before I had to go. It was raining like hell and I was already running behind!

@@TBendez the car used for driving scenes was a 40il disguised as a 50il. They did the same in the First Transporter movie (a 735 disguised as a 50)

You are however wrong about the Transporter one, and why you'd take lines out of the movie as facts is beyond me. On the DVD extras they specifically speak about it being a one-off car, a 750 manual, built for a BMW exec and that Statham was the one driving it. The movie dialogue states 735 but that doesn't really matter.

As BMW'S go, I really used to love the 850, but they were an absolute horror show when it came to keeping it out of the shop. That being said, cool find Hoovie. Best of luck.
As someone who has had to work on them before, they can also be an absolute nightmare to work on. I've heard stories of mechanics walking out of the shop just so they don't have to work on it when one comes in lol.
@@hotchkess846 Doesn't it have have two fuel pumps and two distributor caps and the batteries are in the trunk? Strange design but I thought it was cool. As bad as it was, it was more reliable than the Jaguar Sovereign 12 cylinder.

My s type r had the same issue with the fuel door, all I did was take out the solenoid and cleaned it up and it started to work. Saved 275 bucks at the time.

Many years ago I had a 2001 Miata in dark blue with tan leather interior. I thought it was one of the nicest looking cars with the top down. Then, one day I took a ride to Palm Beach and on Worth Avenue I saw a Z8 in the exact same color combination with the top down. The Z8 was very similar in shape but much more muscular and larger. One of the nicest sports cars that I have ever seen. It made my precious Mazda look very cheap by comparison.
I whole heartedly agree that is the greatest BMW ever made. Absolutely stunning. If only it had the red interior.

The Z8 is the perfect Hoovie car, because he is one of the only people who'd want an M5 engine with a manual in a chassis designed to float and cruise. The Z8 handled significantly worse than the E39 M5, so the only people who would want the Z8 would also want a relaxed engine and an automatic. The vast majority of people who want to drive stick also care more about handling than looks.
This is why I stop messing around with these types of cars. These are the surprises a used car dealer hates to deal with on the drive away from a purchase.

I had a red 2,8 CS in 1985 when I was at high school, the only 14 year old Coupé had been so non expensive that others bought a 2CV for the same amount of money. Still the 2,8 CS was the fastest car on the school's parking...
Tyler BMW did make make their own mini films called BMW Films featuring your lineup and with all cars silver. These were awesome with each telling a different story and all by different directors and star cast. One was on the M5 , directed by Guy Ritchie “STAR” featuring Madonna and Clive Owen. Truly amazing if you haven’t seen them please check them out. To this day they remain one of the best car Advertising campaigns I have scene. I can remember having to wait a month anxiously waiting for the next film to be released. It was just brilliant as they released one at a time kept you engaged and made you excited about all these cars. But like in the bond films They absolutely destroyed every single car and in some cases times two or three of the same car to shoot the film. Another series exist with the whole backstory and behind the scene footage.

My Mother wanted to buy one of these back in the day, and I was always encouraging the idea, but she never bit… I’m going to revisit this. She can totally afford it, and I can maintain it, as I’ve managed several V8 BMW’s from this era. She’s 76, and my senior discount is VERY appealing!
I had a Z8 in the past. I had a collection of nice cars at the time. The others paled into insignificance as soon as I bought it. Not the fastest or best handling car out there, but it wasn't supposed to be. This car is about occasion. The car was beautiful inside and out. No wonder they fetch 200k plus these days. I miss it.
