Why would they? The Byzantines secretly aided Saladin in the 3rd Crusade, resulting in the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In fact, the crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204 during the 4th crusade, which never actually made it to the Holy Land. Richard the Lionheart also conquered Cyprus and sold it off from under the Byzantines. There was no love between the east (Byzantines) and the west (HRE) mostly based upon religious grounds - which was who was the actual heir to Christianity, the Pope in Rome (Catholics) or the Patriarch in Constantinople (Orthodox). That's how you get the odd and amusing situation that Catholic nations are sacking an Orthodox city for being in league with a Sunni commander of a Shia caliphate.
Jordan Breon The Eastern Orthodox Church had no head and was the original, the Pope was a patriarch who claimed to have the word of god and split from the church
I can only imagine what this would be like IRL if Legend was Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire. xD "Send emissaries to every single kingdom we know." "What should they say, Emperor?" "That we shall have war!" "With everyone?" "Yes, everyone!" "Uh..." "Do it! Don't question my master plan, just do it!" "As you wish, my Emperor." "And send more emissaries to every settlement within the empire. Tell everyone to move to Egypt!" "What? Why?" "DO IT!"
Super late reply but another fun story I love is that when he reached rome the pope walked out to meet him and thru some unknown method convinced him to just up and leave
Only just discovered the channel, found the longest playlist I could, binge watch material for days. Also, got to love how your first move was essentially to become a more financially stable North Korea.
Hey man, I know you don't much care for people's opinions on what you do, but I would just like to personally thank you for doing this. I love your This Is Total Wars, and Attilla is my favorite of Rome 2's stuff. So thanks for doing it.
Yeah I know they're a pain, I tried one myself after you did the West. I pussed out and used the Sassanids and got whooped. Could always do an Empires of Sand on Hard to relax? Those are always interesting to see and one would be alot less of a pain than a TITW. Even if you TITW'd one of them, it'd probably be easier. Especially Axum, turtled in the lowest section of the map. Anyways, looking forward to seeing how this goes. Probably gonna go rewatch the Western one.
PITA and tedious though it is to make these, much thanks for doing so. Count me in the few that see the plan as a clever one. To me, this is just a more efficient version of the WRE strategy-you shrank and consolidated in that campaign for defensive and especially economic benefits (that corruption, ouch). The "interest" trait just makes this same approach exponentially more effective, and even bypasses the ridiculous effects that corruption has on finances in this game. You've likely already done many parts in this, but I could even see this mechanic allowing you to field stacks of mid or high tier troops, if taken to enough of an extreme. Whether it fails or not, hats off for ingenuity.
You are the man Legend! Glad to see some Attila GC back on your channel! I was actually going to jokingly ask you to do a TITW ERE campaign on your WRE series a while ago, but it seems like you have your own thrills to do it! Looking forward to this series!
To be honest it really isn't that hard to hold on to all Byzantine territory you will lose a few but when your armies are built some turns later you can easily reconquer and then project power with your economic power and conquer more territory, I know legend is always about efficiency at least in his disaster campaigns I hope he did this for a challenge.
The sun rose on Constantinople, except that it didn't because it was abandoned after every building being destroyed for profit and the empire withdrew to Egypt, capturing it back fifty years later.
I see the tactic Egypt was always crucial to the Roman's because of the grain. I played as eastern Rome on normal (because I'm such a noob) and after fighting and having couple of cities burned sacked and looted by the barbarians and hums they offered peace to me and even offered bunch of money for that peace. Then I went to rebuild the Balkan regions and just conquered from there. When he said that idea would be crazy I thought he would abandone balkans all up to Constantinople.
Also, if you just camp at the town square with spears in front, cohors behind, both in testudo, then you can hold out against full stacks of guys for dayyyyss. Then run around with your scout cav after their whole army is in the city.
Just found your channel, wanted to see gameplay from Attila as I don't have this one. Love the idea of building up a fortune at the very beginning and living off of interest, as well as the hyper-aggressive tactics of declaring war on everyone and minimizing your fronts. Seems tough but I'm excited to watch the rest of the playthrough and see how it panned out.
From a tactical point of view your plan makes sense however if done poorly (which isn't going happen knowing you) is borderline suicide after all a good commander never abandons a defensive position.however as you have laid out your plan to some extent if you pull it off will benefit you massively.Less corruption as you will eventually have less territories which when renovated can lead to a strong eco even if you interest plan fails (which it wont).Furthermore the choke point the sassainds will have to go through will allow to consolidate forces against them and solve the swarm problem. I have found that eastern armoured Lego are defiantly worth the cost and upkeep So once you get to that point adding a few units of them can add some effective unit variety (with a 100% missile block chance in defensive Testudo) because armies of only Basic spear men which made the later half of WRE campaign a bit lacklustre though i can imagine it was worse for you. Also holding up in Constantinople for a while might be a good idea as the AI will aim for it buying you time to build in Egypt. Thank you for doing this series. and if you read this and taken either points of advice i hope it helps if you use them.Good luck legend i know you can do it. I apologise for incorrect grammar or spelling.
Welcome back to the ricefields gents! Where our angry aussie curses and swears at you and the game non-stop until every faction is destroyed and he wins! WELCOME HOME
wow good surprise legend ! good plan ( crazy also ) i really like how you play but if i could say something i would prefer you to play with good armies ( less ) and not with spam armies. And it will be even more difficult and entertaining but nothing to hard for a legend ! good luck for that campaign !
Legend: in order to save the empire we must destroy it. Bro what kind of quote is that Hadrian made a way better quote then that garbage (Hadrian is actually a TH-camr that made a modded series of this faction you should definitely watch it it’s very entertaining
As i figured out, best thing to do as ERE is to end all pacts with WRE or even declare war on them, since it will save you from hordes and will improve relationships with them.
I know my Comment comes way too late, but i tried the same and it worked out pretty well. I also declared War an the Ghassanids so the Sassanid Empire and even the Huns liked me (after i wiped out Ostrogoths/Visigoths). Only Problem was my trustworthy. It was "unworthy" for about 40 turns so my hole diplomacy was shit for the most important phase of the campaign.
He sounds a tiny little bit like Peter Dinklage doesn't he? Really enjoying this campaign so far btw. Just imagine Tyrion Lannister sitting at a PC, having his fun with Total War... haha
last australian gamer did an Eastern Roman campaign. Didn't adopt your tactic of just defending Egypt, though. He was well on his way to a divine triumph, but the game wouldn't let continue after he'd saved his way to two thousand million gold in his treasury. I expect most of your regions will revolt rather than be taken by the barbarians. I'll be most interested to see how the ai does with the Western Roamn Empire
+tscchope Probably as it always does, terribly. Especially with the extra wars Legend forced on them. In my campaigns they usually lose gaul and brittania in the first 20 or 30 turns (if not faster)

This is a brilliant strategy, but I could never do it. Constantinople is one of my favorite cities. I could never abandon it
Same
Aye, same
Jackson sad all the empires in century xv don’t think the same when the Ottoman Empire invaded the city
Why would they? The Byzantines secretly aided Saladin in the 3rd Crusade, resulting in the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. You forgot one thing....
DESTROY EVERY BUILDING IN CONSTANTINOPLE
You also forgot “send orders to all the armies and order the troops to be sent home”
They would have killed him in three seconds. Byzantine Emperor was a very unhealthy vocation.
I mean it worked for the Russians so......
Rexusa, get your body ready. We're going in for round 2.
+LegendofTotalWar YES!! YES!!!! YESSSSS!!!!!
+LegendofTotalWar Rexusa did not teach us for this kind of body readiness, only he can withstand what is about to come >:d
+LegendofTotalWar hell yeah baby.
+LegendofTotalWar This is WAR! Gonna enjoy seein this one since i didnt get to see your original Medieval 2 and Rome 1 playthroughs
+LegendofTotalWar MY body is ready too, for the first time
"The air was filled with smoke and blood"... Sounds like my house on Saturday night.
Belligerently Recalcitrant AHAHAHAH!
Suspiciously specific
Blood¿
oh yes, the radfem parties are wild
Ironic that it was Constantinople that saved Byzantium - supposedly when Attila arrived at the city, he took one look at the walls and left.
Super late reply but another fun story I love is that when he reached rome the pope walked out to meet him and thru some unknown method convinced him to just up and leave
@@UnholyWrath3277 Heard that one, but it sounds like propaganda to me. I can't help thinking there's more to that story.
@@mrk45 propaganda or no attila is never recorded to have actually sacked rome so something got him to leave
One of those moments I would love to be able to go back and see exactly what happened
chandler gensel I think Atilla never crossed the Po river.
You abandoned Constantinople that's nuts what's
... You... Are... Totally...Mad.
That's why we have to call you Legend.
Waiting for the next episode.

+Ozpin “Chibi” Cane No problem... Actually these series are a total pain in the ass, but it's ok.
+LegendofTotalWar At least this isn't the Western Roman Empire you had so much fun with.
Yeah I know they're a pain, I tried one myself after you did the West. I pussed out and used the Sassanids and got whooped.

+Siberian Medved This campaign if played the same way is harder than WRE. That's why we have to think outside the box and do it differently.
+Ozpin “Chibi” Cane Have you tried Divide et Impera for Rome2?
"We don't care about Constantinople"
TF
This strategy is.... unique. Declaring war on everyone and then disbanding loads of armies is interesting. This is where the fun begins.
PITA and tedious though it is to make these, much thanks for doing so.

After 4 years, I needed to come back here
Me too
Me too
Me too
is this real? New Attila grand campaign... never expected to see one more. well that fills up my daily total war tab.
5:48 "One crucial game saving trait that will get us through this - Interest!"
Hahahaha
"This we can live of!"
Yeah!!! more This is Total war have fun Legend I know how much you love this Game XD
he has said that he doesnt like attila
No shit really thanks for telling me something that everyone knows ......
I've waited all my life for a byzantine campaign from legend.

Bold and clever strategy, never thought of it because the fun of the challenge trying to keep everything is part of the campaign’s interest
Oh god, I don't know if anyone was asking for this but I'm glad to see it anyway!
Lmao was so hyped then I listened the strategy and realized I'm going to pass this one...have fun Legend.
Lmao
I love this plan of yours +LegendofTotalWar Been waiting for a new playthrough!
This is why i like watching you. You show us the way that is not that much considered and reap the reward for it !
Also, if you just camp at the town square with spears in front, cohors behind, both in testudo, then you can hold out against full stacks of guys for dayyyyss. Then run around with your scout cav after their whole army is in the city.

This is a ballsy plan. This is gonna be a fucking brutal campaign.

Burn it to the fucking ground.

Awesome, this will be a great series!
awesome video 10/10 i have started playing rome 2 and attila recently alot has changed, the mods got me back into them both
I m so excited legend good luck bro!
Our bodies are ready for this
This will work. Pleasantly surprised to see you back on Attila though
I like your new vision for the eastern empire, it will be an interesting watch
Love the approach, good luck!

Ruthless and logical. I'm looking forward to following this one.

Greetings and welcome from legendofautoresolve :P
+eldarconvert Don't blame me that it's effective. That's how they programmed the game. I'm against it as much as anyone.
how about you do a series where you will play every battle no matter what, even if your going to lose or take more casualties
+eldarconvert He has...quite a few times.
last australian gamer did an Eastern Roman campaign. Didn't adopt your tactic of just defending Egypt, though. He was well on his way to a divine triumph, but the game wouldn't let continue after he'd saved his way to two thousand million gold in his treasury.

yess, thank you for doing this. Hopefully it will be more fun than the WRE campaign. I'm still only at episode 50 of that, but now i'm distracted by this.
let the grinding begin again
This will probably become a conquer the world campaign.

Yes that is what i have been hoping for. This is gonna be some serious shit
@33:36 "Doubling our money every 18 turns"
I believe it's approximately every 14.2 turns.

Go full defensive in a good defensive position. I actually like it.
its like mubarak going back to 395 ad and wreking everything but egypt
You are a genius, strategos
I understand your strategy; abandon your large empire and hide in an isolated corner of the world, then expand from here. Good idea!
I really appreciate your channel @Legendoftotalwar
Edit: fuqah!
This dude is the fucking best. Talk about being unorthodox bruh
You know, you can wipe Visigots to turn 2, just move both west armies to Marcianopolis
btw shoukdnt anatolia be the safest region since the enemy has to siege constantinople first before entering and in the eastern frontier there is around 4 small city that u can use as a fortress
I like how you play it’s really smart
Fucking love this man just really upset you have to give up do much
yeeeeeeeeees thank you for this i liked your wre but will love this even more!!!!
Hey Legend, I enjoyed your This is Total War campaign for the WRE and i look forward to seeing you pull this one out of your ass as well. Also, having played through a legendary campaign as the ERE (standard, not TITW campaign) I understand the strategy behind what you are doing and I agree 100%, because even without declaring war on everyone things were still pretty hairy in my campaign for the first 50 turns or so. Abandoning everything but Egypt should give you enough time to regroup and hopefully reforge the ERE into something stronger and more manageable in the long run. Good luck and have fun.
you fucking mad man. i love it.
You should have eliminated the Gepids on the first turn (you could even have autoresovled it) By that you could also have prevented the Ostrogoths from attacking you on the first turn (by blocking them off). You could also have gotten more money from diplomacy, and made more wars. You could have got champions from Thracia region. I've done this exact campaign myself, and can tell that the Sassanid puppets will be the worst part. Nice Stragedy though, I'm impressed.
And so it begins...
Normally I'd trim back the empire for defence. Never thought I'd see it trimmed back that much. Interested to see the money situation
Excellent channel!
finaly you are making a byzantine campain
I still think that the Western Empire campaign in Barbarian Invasion is harder than this.
for rome 1
I wish that on Legendary difficulty there was that force indicator which is on the lower difficulty levels. Its nice to watch how units fall
Also, declaring war on WRE on turn one makes almost every faction in the game like you A LOT
The way you said "Bloody Arabs" hahaha
YEEEEEEEES IM SO FUCKING READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is quite good way i think. cause i played WRE abandoning all the France and British lands and rebuild Italia, Spain, Africa. And also wiped out all the Africa territorys, betrayed ERE, went straight towards the SSE
but it was really shit that corruption of WRE soooo terrible.
Let the world burn so that the worthy can rise from the ashes.
Wouldn't it be easier to turtle around Constantinople where you can block the crossing if needed. I imagine having to retake it at some point will be very difficult as well.
I thought about that as well. Good luck with that conquest. Unless hes just gonna spam auto resolve it like he mentioned in the video.
When Dark Souls starts feeling just a little too easy
you should turn on FXAA if you have nvidia. It greatly reduces jaggies with pretty much zero performance loss, i know because i have a shitty old gtx 660 and i lost no frames whatsoever from it
excellent, i might actually play the game again, now that 6 weeks of holiday are coming up;
are your thoughts basically 'screw the Byzantine empire, I want an IMPERIUM OF MAN'?
You could abandon all regions except north africa + the 3 islands => more money less to worry no famine. Simple as that......
What the living fuck
in Legend we trust ;D
