I fast OMAD regularly on Keto. On days I don't do OMAD I do mostly 16-8 or 20-4 IF. But after a while when I reach low body fat percentage, my body starts heating. My adrenals are overactive and I have difficulty sleeping deeply. In that state I start experiencing adverse effects of keto and fasting. And when I force to continue, things get worse, my sleep get worse, my body temperature rises even more and I feel inflamed when I eat low carbs. But If I stop and go off keto for some days, then the problems go away when I resume with keto. My body temperature returns to normal and I can sleep well. So my subjective conclusion from my personal experience is that overdoing fasting or keto raises the stress hormone when we get close to the lowest fat percentage we can get. as a result we don't sleep well; which raise even more stress and that's a vicious cycle. And since lack of quality sleep is negatively corelated to longevity, that's probably why those who overdo fasting or keto don't live very long.
Don't to KETO (do your research) but rather eat as many HEALTHY carbs as you want during your OMAD. Valter Longo gives a great intro in his book the longevity diet. Keto is idiotic IMO
I've had the same problem doing IF and sleeping.... so I have 90% of my calories in a 3 hour window - but then have an additional 10% around 5.30pm... this means that I can still do IF/TRE and not lose sleep. I'm guessing if I did OMAD then I'd probably run into sleep problems though.
I have been a vegan for 29 years. I am 65 years old and live in the USA. My last bone scan two years ago showed my bones were like that of a 30 year old. I believe we can eat a plant-based diet, live a long life, and be completely healthy. I think a plant-based diet is better than a diet with highly processed foods such as chips, pastries, donuts, candies, cookies, and a diet full of really high fatty food such as some of the pork and beef products consumed. I have always taken B12 as a supplement. And, even now, during current times, B12 is often lacking in the plants due to overuse of the soil and consistent constant use of pesticides which kill all good insects along with the harmful ones. So humans may not be receiving the necessary damage of B12 while consuming meats.
You said both "live a long life" and "be completely healthy." Unfortunately, these things are often at odds with each other. A diet rich in bioavailable nutrients is a diet that is largely comprised of animal foods. This same diet is high in protein and fat, which cause the activation of a number of genes, most notably mTOR. With mTOR upregulated and high levels of micronutrients, our bodies can operate with much less prioritization of needs and can GROW, rather than sustain. This is why animal foods are so vital for children in development. As we age, keeping our bodies in this growth forward state becomes damaging to hundreds of specialized tissues and basically causes us to age faster. Veganism is a prolonged state of nutrient deprivation, where the body becomes incredibly efficient at storing and utilizing what little nutrients it receives and protects specialized tissues from damage. This is why nutrient deprivation is useful in the treatment and prevention of dozens of cancers. Unfortunately, this causes lots of stress, and the lack of nutrients (or energy required to convert the plant forms of those nutrients, eg betacarotene to retinol) results in a host of symptoms such as brain fog, headaches, lethargy, depression, etc. The chronic elevation of homocysteine from low B12 is also likely the reason why vegans are something like 4-6x more likely than even someone eating a processed, refined American diet to have a stroke (ironically, a diet high in protein also causes high homocysteine.) These are all natural reactions to the body being deprived of nutrients, which absolutely helps us to live longer. An ideal diet for LONGEVITY is veganism, an ideal diet for HEALTH (meaning general physical well being, while also living a long time) is some combination of periodic fasting or nutrient deprivation coupled with short, incredibly nutrient and calorie dense refeeds.
Prof Longo may be right about he difficulty of various fasting regimes. I've done FMD 4 times but not at all in the last year. When I did it I felt very good. Have been doing TRE for over 5 years though, and it hasn't been a problem. On gallstones, I haven't seen any study that shows a good diet with 16/8 has negative side effects like gallstones. The breakfast thing needs to be untangled from lifestyle. I'm not hungry in the morning so why should I eat? In any case, these comments about gallstone and breakfast have been made for several years and need to thoroughly examined.
Buddhist monks and nuns have been doing TRE for 2,600 years - I don't think there is any special reports from Thailand and Burma on gallstone problems in monastics.
I have the same questions/comments on Dr. Longo's comments on breakfast and all plant based diets. Where are the studies to which he refers? Has he ever dived deeply into Dr.Greger's summaries of such research. We have had the impression that Dr. Longo. is a wonderful and a very Italian researcher who loves the cuisine of la Mama, and perhaps overestimates the role of tradition in a given culture's cuisine. I have never heard him note that the foods that our ancestors were not so polluted and processed as the food we have eaten since post WWII. He seems to have moved over the years to more mostly Plant based diets, but when he recently commented that all vegans have been found to have 2 X the fractures ( I think he said, " hip," but I did not hear that word clearly), he gave no source reference. For years, I keep asking, "why doesn't Dr. Longo refer us to studies summarized by Dr. Greger on NutritionFacts.com? Does he not like the site? It would be so helpful for many of us.

If you have ears to hear check out Dr. Robert Morse and the raw vegan community perspective as well. Everything points towards plant based, lower protein diets being healthy. Modern scientific findings are showing this. Why not take it to another level and make it raw like how all animals in nature eat their food. The foods that can be eaten raw are fruits, veggies, and tubers, and some nuts i think. But be weary when you don’t feel good, detoxification is a must. Generations of eating certain foods that are inharmonious with the human have created changes and adaptations. An unnecessary need for stimulation of glands. The body wants to rebuild itself to become stronger and clear obstructions caused by acidic chemistry in the lymphatic system that derive from meat, dairy, starch. Human anatomy and psychology is close to that of a fruigvore/herbivore. Color vision, small mouths, small hands with no claws, specific ph levels of saliva and stomach, feelings of guilt to kill animals, closely related to chimpanzees and bonobos (frugivores).
Interesting that longo is not as excited about the 12-14-16 hour intermittent fasting as he was 5+ years ago. What about the Benefits of autophagy from it doctor? It’s the best type of lifestyle anyone can do for themselves. Why aren’t you pushing that? Funding? A Nobel Prize was awarded for autophagy. Why the back stepping? Interesting.
From everything I read, you cannot reach autophagy in 12 or 14 or 16 hours of fasting. I havent ever heard Dr. Longo talk that positively about IF Of course if you want to do that, then ok but his research is targeted on longevity.
Dr. Longo and others in the field started getting calls from people and families calling to stop putting out multi-day fasting as it was causing accidents specifically people passing out while driving. Bottom line, they had to tone down what they were putting out on TH-cam and they started advising that any fasts over a day or so be supervised. People newly into fasting don't know about the need for electrolytes and mineral support for multiday fasting. This is what causes the light headedness or dizziness.
Dr. Longo now recommends 12 hrs of daily fasting with a 12-hr eating window (this is what he generally does) and doing the 5-day Fasting Mimicking Diet one to 4 times a year, or even monthly for a limited period, depending on the need. But you get lots of autophagy on the FMD bcz autophagy requires very low protein over a 36-hr period minimum & the FMD is very low protein.
Drink tons of water, make sure you are getting electrolytes (minerals) through some kind of supplementation, eat lots of nutrition dense greens, eggs are prime source of protein, I try to eat five a day. Avoid processed foods and sugar by making soups and stews and salads. Very important intermittent fasting take one day a week and do not eat anything after dinner until the next evenings dinner. This allows your body to detox.
Food is not free. He created the diet because they couldn’t get people to do a water fast. Even with cancer. All of the proceeds of Prolon go to fund more research.
Vegans within the 7th day Adventist study had the longest lifespan of any of the blue zone areas. Dont listen to dr Longo foolish comment about 30% of vegans being mall nourished, or having more bone fractures. That all just depends on what type of vegan diet is one on, etc. Also, the bone study is bunk because it didnt take into account how active the individuals are. In other words if you are out doing physical hobbies, sports, etc, you're going to be more likely to be injured compared to someone that is just laying around the house watching television. Anyway, be careful of what dr longo says. His common sense seems lacking in some ways. Either that or he has an agenda. Also, I dont like the fact that he's selling his own processed food line. He's clearly starting to look like a marketeer, in my opinion.
