J D was with the group, J D is the one who brought Richard Sterban in. J D at one time was suffering from a sore throat and Elvis asked J D if he new anyone that could take his place for a little while and J D got Richard Sterban, that is the story I heard one time in an interview of J D.
dukebluedevil1able what i heard, at the time jd was the manager and he has richard, but elvis want jd to take bass part coz elvis love the ending that jd always use, you can heard it from jd sumner answered about elvis :)
Without taking anything away from this phenomenal performance, this is my second favorite version of this song. The Stamps Quartet with J.D. Sumner own it. But so, so close... still amazing and beautiful. Every time I hear this wonderful song, I am elevated into a higher place, I truly feel the "spirit." No wonder it was Elvis' favorite hymn.
Richard Sterban clearly answers all of these questions about "when he joined the Stamps", "why", "their work with Elvis while he was there" and "why he left"... it's all in his just released book... "From Elvis To Elvira". You can order it from the Oak Ridge Boys website. It's a facinating read and I highly recommend it!
"Without a doubt we'll know, that we have been revived when we shall leave this place", and every knee shall bow, and every tongue will confess that He is Savior.
Richard sounded better then I think. He sounded great up through the mid to late early 2000’s. But here it sounds like he has great tone placement and a very rich smooth tone.
@ChubbyBeak Pretty sure this wasn't the original group that toured with Elvis at first. That would have been with JD Sumner who started the Stamps singing as the bass.
It's weird when you think of Richard Sternum singing with the Stamps Quartet instead of the Oak Ridge Boys. I wonder what show this was and what year it was?
Raymond Lisle I too loved his performance. But when you compare Richard with J.D. Sumner, you can HEAR Richard, but you can FEEL J.D. Watch their video and see for yourself.
Con Rar this was a time when JD wanted to retire, so he hired Richard Sterban to take his place and the group keep singing, well this was also the same time Elvis had booked the Stamps to be his back up singers and Elvis wanted JD and retirement wasn't what JD expected it to be so JD came back.
Thanks for the information. However, it looked like Raymond was implying Richard's voice was good here, then wondered what happened. So I was just a bit confused what he meant
Elvis loved this song and Elvis loved these Great singers..
Ed Enoch a Legend !!!
Donnie is a phenomenal singer and piano player, heard his testimony at church. Halalujah Jesus.
Best Stamps line up ever.
Is it not ‘better’ with JD Sumner?
Thank you LORDJESÚS for going away & sending the Comforter to me today. Sweet Holy Spirit
Brittany LaShay yes sweet Jesus we welcome you sweet Holy Spirit yes Lord

I saw Ed Enoch in Germany singing with Elvis the Concert and The Elvis Musical . Fantastic Song .
Gruß Stephan

Great singing!!!
I was in a group with your dad. The Regents from Huntsville Alabama.
Best quartet going at this point in time. Check out their album "Something Special" if you can find it.
Muito bom!!! Glória a DEUS!!!
wow
late 60's early 70's. The Gary Buck I'm talking about is from Decatur Al. Also sang with the Four Guys on the Opry.

@biggaskets close to home. I live in Athens AL.

Richard Sterban sounded just like a young J.D. Sumner here. What happened?
Raymond Lisle

What do you mean what happened?

He joined The Oak Ridge Boys
Just curious, did you know my dad, Gary Buck Buckles?
great
This is what you call bass.
Oh, ok. My dad was Gary "Buck" Buckles, but my dad new The Four Guys well.
I thought Aaron McCune was a lower bass than RS around the same age, perhaps i was wrong.
Richard was a good back up for JD
Really? My dad never mentioned The Regents. What year?
Bass singer oak ridge boys singer

JD & The Stamps were not good Christian boys when with Elvis. Remember this is show business.
