Here is a lesson of the Keith Richards rhythm part from Brown Sugar.
Keith Richards is also a writer on this song and played the rhythm guitar. In an interview I listened to last week with Mark Maron, Keith explained that he was shown the tuning and the 5 string approach by Bobby Goldsboro!
This song was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in early december 1969 , just a few days before the bands performance at Altamont Speedway.
It was the first single for Sticky Fingers , released in 1971.
The lyrics (Mick Jagger) may or may not be inspired by women Mick Jagger was dating or drugs the band was taking :) This song does however speak to the bands undeniable obsession with rhythm and blues.
I've been extremely lucky to work with all sorts of people making records. I'm a product of that era and it's message of peace and love.
    THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!!!

i stopped playing for a number of years and somehow stumbled across a keef tuning video, tried it out and learned this song and it completely reinvigorated my love of playing

The open chord is so powerful. Saw the stones in 72 at Boston Garden. Brown sugar was the opening song and when Keith hit that first chord the sound almost knocked me off my chair.

Thanks! I haven't played barr chords in years.Good exercise. Back in the 70's I met a guitar player at a party and he taught me about open G tuning and gave me a stack of old blues L P's and made me promise to pass them on to someone else after I learned what I could from them. I did :-)

Not to be sycophantic (although if I were ever to be, it would be for you), but I have been madly in love with your playing since I first heard "Alison" and what you do in the first seconds of this video is exactly why. No one has the blend of soul, melody, groove, style and phrasing that you do, and every time I watch/hear you play it brings a tear to my eye, a smile to my face, and a deep longing that I had kept my chops up to snuff from the wonder-years that were the 80s.
    Thanks, Tim. You RULE!

I do Open G a bit differently this time. I use my Guitar that's tuned to Open E & put a capo on the 3rd Fret which gives me Open G w/ a High G on the Top which is a bit uncommon bit nice & bright sounding.

Thanks Tim for great instruction as always. I did learn this song about a year ago, and, like you said, I did remove the E string. Fun song to play, and one of my favorite Stones tunes. A little bit of music history. They recorded that song at Fame recording studio in Muscle Shoals. There's a pretty funny story about how Keith finished the song Wild Horses. It sounds like one of those crazy Rock n Roll stories you hear about. You should check out the documentary...Muscle Shoals...if you're into music history. I also found out the meaning of the last verse of Sweet Home Alabama, since they did record it there. Only took me 37 years. Thanks again!

For the life of me, I don't understand the 13 "THUMBS" Downers. They must be injesting depressants. Great job!!! I love the way your strings clack against the fretboard evenly. Someone asked John Entwhistle how he set his bass action: I want every note to buzz evenly. When the band is playing, no one notices and it is all for the better.
