If you're wondering what to visit in Coimbra 's surroundings I suggest exploring the Rice Fields Route. This route starts in the village of Maiorca and is a circular one with 13.2KM and it's probably one of the best places to do Birdwatching in Portugal!
Along the way you will see:
- different species of birds and other animals of Portugal
- an archeological site
- incredible views over the rice fields
- some typical Portuguese villages here and there
- the castle of Montemor-o-Velho in the horizon at all times.
Overall, I think this is an excellent route for those who are passionate and looking forward to do birdwatching in Portugal!

I enjoyed doing this hike in Portugal, but my legs are sore!!! It was a joy for the eyes and a great exercise! If you're looking forward to it, I highly suggest doing it during spring on autumn, in a not-so-warm day... because there is almost no shade along the way! Plus, summer is duck hunting season and unfortunately the trails cross a few hunting areas: be careful with that!
Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, use sunscreen, fill your backpack with food and a big bottle of water... and you'll be good to go!

Ah que bom que já fez!! O pavimento levantado deve ser muito antigo, usou-se desde a época Medieval até meados do século XX. Talvez seja a estrada antiga que ligava as pequenas povoações, antes de construírem as alcatroadas que vemos hoje 🙂
