Thanks very much for this production. Well done. For more than 20 years, I have added auxiliary backup lights on the rear mud flaps of my pickups and angled outward so as to provide a spot of light just outside and rearward of the rear tires. This is so that I can see, in my side view mirrors, obstacles as I turn, for example, coming out of a driveway or off a dark country road. This is easily accomplished on any pickup because the lights and wiring are easily accessible. Not quite so much so on my wife's RAV4. Your production has shown me how to access and run the wiring so I can make this safety modification to her car which I enjoy on my pickup.
Why did you go the long way to the top of the hatch door, aka to the back right instead of the shorter path left side of door ( looking from rear perspective)??
The short/long answer Is, while doing the backup lights install, I also put in the led cargo lights in the lift gate and I was feeding wires to that side already. If I was just going to put in the backup lights, I would have gone up the closer side… nice catch!!! 👍👍👍 On my channel you can see the top 20 mods/upgrades I did in the last year. In that video you’ll see the lift gate overhead led lights I installed. Love them! Thanks and if you have any other questions just ask… I love to help… cheers!
Rich, I'm confused. While working on the left side, I see one black wire (which I assume comes from the back of the back up light and contains 2 wires inside it...black and red). From where do the 2 wires hanging on the left side of tail pipe come?....the ones you are attaching to the back up light wires. I am assuming one is power and one is ground. Are they add on lengthening wires you have attached to something above the wheel well? Also, wouldn't it have been easier to the attach the power wire to the back up light associated w/ the rear tail light instead of going all the way up to the top of the hatchback? Thanks, Scott PS Do you have an Amazon link to which back up light you purchased?
Hey Scott! So it does look confusing but let me explain… the one black wire you see coming down on the right of the exhaust actually contains both positive and negative wires (they are very small) (look at minute 7:42 to see the black wire on the right light for reference!) from the light on the left. Both wires are contained in the rubber cover that I stripped back but is very hard to see… so the wires from the right light, left light and “tie in” wires all come together there… The two wires you see on the left of the exhaust are the positive and negative wires I tied into both the backup lights, and then ran them up to ground and positive. The reason I took the positive wire all the way up to the backup light wire, is for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out which one to connect it to at the lower area of the trunk…and I was installing the led lights in the lift gate so everything was taken apart and was exposed anyway… It was just easier for me. And check out my channel for the top 20 upgrades/mods I put on to see the lights I got from Amazon. Really hope that explains it, and feel free to ask more if I just didn’t get you quite there! Cheers!

Hello Rich. Thanks for making the video. I experimented with this using a couple of different back up lights purchased on Amazon and I found that even though I had a lot of light there was a lot of glare from the new lights when viewed in the screen. Looking at your video it looks similar, but I’m not sure if what I see in your video looks that same as it does to your eye in person. How does it look to you? I changed the backup lights to LED, probably my first mod as I backed into something on an unlighted driveway. No damage luckily, but it got me wanting to improve my lighting as much as possible.
Hey Peter! Good question. They are pretty bright to the naked eye for sure and I do get glare, but the trade off is that I can see everything behind me. I did put in LED replacement lights and they improved it, but as I mentioned in the video, it really missed l Illuminating the middle and low parts behind me. I also mentioned in my other video that I built wedges so that they shine out instead of down. When I 1st put them in the glare was horrible, but when I manufactured and installed the wedges, it shown farther back and really helped. So I hope this helps you! Check out the other videos I’ve done on my channel. I just added a video of the puddle lights I installed last week and they are a massive improvement! Merry Christmas my friend!
Rich, can you attach the power cord of the new back up lights to the first back up light you come to, instead of going all the way across to the other back up light? Thanks
I’m sure you can, I just couldn’t figure out which one it was. I’m not a great electrical guy. I just went with the wire I knew was the correct one which means I took it all the way to the source. Hopefully you can find the wire and not have such a long run!! All the best!
Hello! This is the exact same issue I have and your solution looks great - one question: which lights did you buy exactly? Checked the video description but no info there or the comments. :( Thanks!
Why didn’t you just connect those new B/U lights directly into the loom behind the panel you took apart to the left of the spare tire ? That way you wouldn’t have had to mess with the lift gate .
24:33 are you sure that's not too blindingly bright? From the video, I can't really see anything from the backup cameras anymore. Maybe it's different looking at the backup camera in real life.

Wow…that’s a huge compliment! Thank you!
Enjoy your ride and cheers!
This is a great idea! I added one like yours and added a switch in case I need more light when backing up
Perfect! More light is always a good idea! Cheers!

Works great for me. I got the 4 inch LED lights, but the 3 inch might be a better choice if it’s too bright for you… cheers
How is the light it working? Any update on the product... thank you
