Rich, thank you for sharing your experiences. In my books, sharing knowledge is the essential role one has in life. Best wishes from Alberta, Canada (and yes, I am looking at purchasing a Rav4 :) ).
Thanks for your kind words! The Rav 4 is great and the upgrades aren’t that hard. And I agree, helping each other is one more reason we are here! Cheers!
Great suggestions! I’ve done quite few of these, all good ideas. I also added the blackout badge over the rear Toyota symbol (I hate chrome), removed ALL the other badging (just warm it up lightly with a hair dryer, and use floss or fishing line to get behind it and it pops off easily). I added a set of TAC 3” side steps for a beefy look, and to help the kids climb in back (they’re inexpensive and there’s a terrific install video on YT). I always add molded all-weather mats (including a 1-piece rear that will catch any spilled drinks etc.) they’re a must in snow country (I got a set of Toyota brand on eBay for half retail price). Installed rain guards on the windows so you can get ventilation without getting wet - Autoclover 6 piece set - looks great too. Thanks for the vid!
Excellent! And your welcome of course! Mine is the TRD model so it came with all the mats, but I had to change out the drivers side because of poor coverage. Thanks for the “how to” on getting rid of badges. I’m headed to Costco tomorrow for Michelin tires. The TRD off-road tires are horrible in the snow… I’ll change them out for summer to tow my boat. Thanks for the great comments and cheers!
@@richardnesom9897 I don’t right at hand, but I will try to find a link. Iirc it’s an actual Toyota part, I believe they use them for the TRD package or something. I’ll dig around and see if I can come up with it!
Very helpful video. Thanks for taking the time to make this. I have ordered my RAV4 and look forward to getting some accessories from your video here! My favourites were the storage pockets behind the backseats, the driver side window LEDs, and the blackout Toyota badge inside the car.
Thank you! The new 2023 RAV4 Limited now have back-lit buttons on the ceiling so at night you can actually see the buttons. My 2019 were like yours' wherein you couldn't see the buttons at night...bumpers are brilliant. I just traded in my 2019 for the new 2023 Limited...the brand new huge nav system screen is fantastic...wireless Apple / Android connectivity too. Going to use the bumpers for heated steering wheel button. Also, the little tray for the center console is great! And the little zip bags for the area above the glove box...wonderful. Here's one for you..the owner's manual and other manual books take up a ton of room in the glove box...put them in a strong zip lock bag and move to the area where the spare tire is under the rear deck. I mean, how many times a day...week...month do you grab the owners manual. Cheers!
Wow! Very cool! Glad Toyota backlit the buttons. I’m still amazed that I had o spend $55 or so for my backlit window controls. And you’re absolutely right. I’ve never even looked at my owners manual… imagine that! But I’m going to take your suggestion and get it out of my house and put in with the spare! Cheers back!

these are actually fantastic tips. I have a 2021 Rav4 LE. I really could use those gap fillers lol. My GF has a knack for dropping things in the seat crevasse and this would definitely cut down on unwanted mess
They have saved me more than a few times! Between my cell phone not going between the seats and no more lost goldfish crackers everywhere, they really help! Cheers
Those are some smart, sensible and useful upgrades, Rich. I'm going to look into some of those for my Santa Fe! I already have a good roof rack and tow hitch, but the LED lights and things would be good. Thanks for sharing your great ideas mate
There is a dash cam from FITCAMX that fits directly under the mirror, with a oem look. There is a front/back cam kit available. You should check it out.
Thank you for sharing your upgrades. Very useful. Most toyota dealers charge that price for a hitch because that hitch is way up in the bumper further than that one you have. They fab the bumper for it. Plus, that price includes the wiring labor, for trailer connection. However, my dealership charges 900 for the whole thing. I plan to install mine too. The hitch is at summit racing, which is close to me. They have the wring kit, too. Should have $250 in it when I'm done.
So I wanted the factory installed hitch, but my Rav 4 was actually ordered by someone else without it, and when they backed out of the deal, I bought it. So when it’s installed at the factory it’s easy for them because they build it into the process. At the dealer they need to take panels off and it jacks the price up. I also considered the height, and the factory hitch is about 2 to 3 inches above mine… so I used a ball mount with 8 inches of extension and my boat is level at the tongue. This worked for me and I’m sure you’ll do great with yours. Thanks for the great comments and Merry Christmas!
Thank you for making this video. My Rav4 Adventure model will be here in a few days. This video was very helpful. You made a positive difference in the world by helping others.
A lot of great added benefits to the rav4 with these upgrades. I am buying a 2023 hybrid and plan on a lot of what you shown in your video, thanks for sharing.
Great list! I have a 2022 Rav4 TRD Off-road and love it. I like the backseat storage organizer. You should put the links in the description and make a little extra cash 😀
Right on! Hope you like it as much as I like mine! And someone mentioned that about making money with the Amazon link. I like cash, but I did this to help others and that’s reward enough for me. ENJOY YOUR RIDE!
Oh, I mentioned this in a reply to another viewer. The “off-road” tires that come with the TRD are horrible in rain and snow. Pretty good when they were new, but at 22,000 miles I went to Costco and put on Michelin Defenders. I’m in Utah visiting friends and the new tires are quieter, better mileage and are really good in snow and rain. I kept the original ones and I’ll swap them out in the summer to tow my boat, but winter is 100% Michelin time… Cheers my friend!
Thanks! I’m really glad I did the video. Comments have been good and it seems like people are getting out of it a bunch of info that’s helping them. Makes me happy! Cheers
Great ideas! A big quality of life improvement for driving was installing comma ai + openpilot for tesla-like self driving functionality on the highway. It's expensive but it makes a huge difference driving long distances.
Very Nice Video. I have a 2021 Rav 4 Prime XSE, with some of the same mods, but you did make me think of some I didn't think of. My Mods so far: Fit Cam Frint dash cam - it integrates right into the rear-view mirror, so it looks like factory. Hood Struts - So cool not to have to use that silly bar to hold up the hood Side Mirror Sequential blinkers - Love those and much better to see in day & night Replace all door switches with light up ones Center console Rav4 cover - Keep from wearing out the material on the center console. LED reverse and Rear turning(only) led lights - I noticed if you try to swap out the front turning lights with LED's you get hyper flashing. unless you put in an inline resistor. Glove Box organizer Horn - Absolutely had to get rid of the mousy horn with a real ones. Keep up the good work. Thanks
If you’re looking for more upgrade ideas I can share some others I’ve done. I installed a qi wireless phone charger in the space in front of the shifter, then added a wireless carplay adapter so I can just set my phone down on the tray and it wirelessly charges while wirelessly connecting to run my music, phone calls, and navigation. I installed pneumatic struts to replace the kickstand thing under the hood. I installed automatic power folding mirrors, but honestly cannot recommend that upgrade. It’s lots of work and the kit I bought burns through fuses on a regular basis. I upgraded all four door speakers in addition to the dash. It’s an improvement, but less so than the dash speakers. It did require drilling out the rivets that hold in the door speakers. I installed a kick sensor to operate the power liftgate. Works well, but requires two mercury switches to function for both opening and closing. I added rubber mats for extra grip in all the nook storage spots in the car (dash trays, in the doors, plus center console. I’ve also done most of the upgrades you showed, and I’m sure I’m forgetting some too! It’s a little addicting upgrading the RAV4. 😂
Whoa! You topped anything I did! Mercury switches!? Folding mirrors!? That’s rockstar mods! I was going to replace my door speakers, but it was past my pay grade. Removing the panels was more than I wanted to take on. And the dash tweeters turned out so good I stopped there, but I bet yours sounds so much better. I’m getting ready to buy the struts for the hood. Hate the hood “stick” to hold it. Past that not much more to do… Thanks for the details of everything you did. Helps me and helps others which is great… cheers!!!
Im looking for a wireless charging pad… do you recommend installing after market? I have wireless CarPlay - salesman sold me the car thinking it also had wireless charging 😔
I just plug in to use apple car play. I don’t want to remove my case or change it so I’d look at other TH-cam videos to see what will work best for you. Hope you find the info you need!
Thanks Rich. I am in the process of purchasing a 2023 Rav4 that has not been delivered yet, and I can't wait to add some of your recommendations. Well done!
I love my Rav 4 and I’m sure you’ll love yours too! I’ve had mine 16 months and have 32000 miles. I bought it to use and using it I am! Have fun with the mods… cheers!
Thanks! Drove me crazy that I couldn’t find the buttons without the bumpers. My Honda CRV you just pushed the light itself and it came on… it was a better design. Now I feel safe feeling for them to turn on the lights… cheers!
Thank you for making this video! I've saved it. There are several items you showed that I will most likely buy. I'm not mechanical so may need to have the mechanic install the light items, etc.
Hey! Thank you! I lived on a sailboat for 16 years and you did a lot of problem solving all the time… guess it’s just part of my make up now! Be well and cheers!
Thank you for your video! I'm anticipating buying a RAV this year and I'm definitely looking to put in the improvements to the reverse lighting and inside boot lighting as well.
Did the TorkLift too. I dig that its higher than others. I didn't bother to trim the plastic though. It pushes up on it only slightly and seems fine to me. I used a kit from Uhaul for the wiring, Cheers.
All these upgrades are useful. I personally don't need a tow hitch - I have a couple of 4Runners to pull stuff. One item I would not replace - door window/lock switch. Yes, it sucks that Toyota doesn't have them fully illuminated but at least it's Toyota, and it works. Aftermarket stuff may or may not.
You make a good point. I’ve had the illuminated door window switch for almost two years. Works just great so fa and so much easier to see and use for me… That said, it’s not like I threw out the original switches. I have them along with all the parts I switched out just in case. Some things are good for some, not all things are good for all. Thanks for chiming in. Be well, cheers
Those cabinet bumpers were a stroke of genius. I’ve been looking to find some sort of brail stickers to help find the switches while driving but those seem to be the a solid and inexpensive option.
Love the idea with the grill lights. That made a heck of a difference and I may steal that idea! I have the same mirror lights and I’m thrilled with them! I got the cross bars too from the factory and just make the car look much more aggressive. I blacked out all of my emblems for a more aggressive look as well. I’m looking to change out my grill piece because I hate the chrome look. Thanks so much for sharing all your mods!
Wow! Way cool. The grill lights made a huge difference on the road. Like I say in my video, they are not off road spots, but very bright gap fillers. One of my favorite mods. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out my channel for the install video. I’m less than pro level on the production of the vid, but you’ll understand why I did it the way I did. Thanks for the nice comments and Merry Christmas!
@@phtevenchevas3960 TRD should have all these upgrades standard… you’re already paying premium plus for TRD, why not make it a premium SUV! Glad you liked the vid and enjoy your ride! Cheers
On most vehicles you can have the fog lights stay on with the high beams with a modification in the fuse box it’s like one wire. Also, I’d look up your vin and double check you have the tow package with coolers etc if the car didn’t come with a hitch, highly unusual to have a tow package without a hitch factory installed. Most likely they screwed up the order when you got the car.
Thanks for all the good ideas; although I probably wont do any wiring or drilling or cutting, many of the other ideas are fantastic. This from someone born in Bremerton and after 30 years active Navy, settled in Everett. Brand new RAV4 last weekend and the mode switches for Eco, Normal, Sport, etc. don't work!
@@terrylang9707 Hey! A Northwest guy! Don’t blame you on the wiring drilling and cutting. Not hard to do, but a lot of people concerned about the warranty… And all my buttons work, but that’s the part that scared me most about buying it. Technology is great til it isn’t! All the best and cheers
Thanks Rich. The stereo in my 2021 RAV4 sounds really bad. I just ordered the JBL speaker and Redwolf wiring harness. Looking forward to the improvement. Thanks for the tip!
I like the driving lights. Ive had the thought that, the brights do a well job, but it could be just a bit brighter, right where you were talking about. Like where the lights dont hit. Nice job on it all.
Nice Job there Rich. I have a Limited so we have the interior lights on the Doors that came with it. I like being able to 'Find' the correct button myself. Annoying when you have to Hunt & Peck for them. I want to look into the outside lighting. Those front 'Fog Lights' are fantastic. Same for the 'Back Up Lights' too.
One upgrade I've done on my car that I am happy about were getting "Silicone Wipers" if you don't have it and get it, you'd be surprised how much better they are, My old wipers were perfect but still, they're so quiet and never leave any streak. they're supposed to last much much longer. I commute to work so things like that are important for me. I do coat my windshield with the water beading treatment but together it really helps when it rains.
Oh my gosh you’re reading my mind! I got Costco replacements which worked great on my CRV, but are skipping and loud. Do you have a brand you can share with us that you recommend?! THANKS! and Merry Christmas!
@@richgibson1816 Sure. The Rain X AdvantEdge. They have this yellow cover over the actual blade. I seen a video a long time ago and the guy recommended Silicone Blades. Maybe it was Scott Kilmer channel? not sure exactly where I heard about them. but that's what I have and they've been perfectly quiet, i've had them close to 2 years, they're good as new. I bought mine at Walmart actually. Merry Christmas to you too! (That doesn't offend my religion) :)
Very interesting as I am about to get a 2020 Rav4. Fortunately the previous owner put front and rear dashcams on. On thing I like to do on all of my cars, is put an anti reflective cover on the dashboard to stop a head up display when the sun is shining. I think there are custom covers available, but I often get an old black T-Shirt and cut it to suit, holding it in place with some blu-tac. It really improves the forward vision.
Tell me about it… I’m installing puddle lights on mine tonight. Truly a grand undertaking to mount and wire. 🤬 On my brothers Subaru, puddle lights are standard… So I love my Rav 4, but they did go cheap on a bunch of stuff. Thanks for chiming in and cheers!

Toyota RAV4 TRD beautiful car, you're lucky! You can also upgrade the speakers to subwoofer and amplifier, the sounds is massively beautiful, nice bass!
I’ve had a couple people tell me about that… but now a days, I mostly, 90% of the time, listen to podcasts casts… and replacing the two front speakers worked out perfectly for me. The short amount of time I’m listening to music, it sounds good to me. If I 25 instead of 67, I bet my opinion would be different!!! 😂😜🤪 cheers!
@@richgibson1816 67? it doesn't matter how old we are but we can enjoy the life, me 40 and listen music with nice bass 😂 the only problem most upgrades are for newer RAV4 because mine is 2018 but I did some upgrades like interiors led lights, headlights both high and low, subwoofer and amplifier, soon tint windows little more dark on the back but driver and passenger not too dark, also Pioneer radio touchscreen with Bluetooth, Google maps, apple play and android play etc. I'm upgrading my car little by little and it's great! Thanks for sharing your video I'm learning more on TH-cam.
Great mods. One suggestion - there is BLACK reflective tape on the market. It it practically invisible during day-time, but during the night works just fine, reflecting the light.
Hey, Rich! Nice modifications! It's a pity that in Russia they fine police officers for non-factory modifications! So I replaced the interior lamps in my rab4 with LEDs and threw out the factory high frequency speakers in the front panel. The new alpine speakers sound great. Let's upgrade our Toyotas to Lexus level :)
Very kind words! I was in your boat as well. Couldn’t find one that showed all the upgrades I did as well. One here, one there. These are some really great accessories! One thing you didnt show that I am planning to install is an Auto-start-stop eliminator to permanently disable the auto start stop which I absolutely hate. Amazon also has this available and its just a small harness that plugs inline to the switch under the climate controls.
@@richgibson1816 no this is just the regular gas model in Limited trim. That's interesting, I assumed all trims had the auto-start stop function, interrstinf that the TRD does not.
@@p51mustang31 Hey. No, mine does not, and if it did, I would disable it. Mines a 21 and maybe it came standard after mine. Seems like it would just wear your Rav 4 out faster and not really save that much on gas. Good luck!
Here is another must have mod that every US or Canada based cars MUST have: get aspherical mirrors from Europe. That increases field of view by 60% and eliminates a need to turn head over shoulder.

Maybe do a video on the TRD towing and launching your boat ? I am curious as to the weight / size of your boat ? I am looking for an economical vehicle to tow as well . Thanks
That sounds like something I’ll do when the weather permits. I tried to go crabbing for Dungeness crab last Monday and got snowed on so had to abandon that idea… (winter in Washington state!) As far as my boat, it’s a Klamath 15 with a Yamaha 40 on it. I weighed it last year with equipment and trailer and it was about 1500 pounds. If you look at my channel you’ll see a few videos of me launching and using it. Look for the Keyport launch video from 2021. I launch it with my CRV before I got my Rav 4… hope that helps! Cheers!
Nice video. I have some of the same complaints. I have a 21 XSE (should have waited for the Limited I wanted), but I took my factory roof rails off. They created too much wind noise on the freeway. I've also noticed that the side mirrors get dirty so I'm looking for a solution for that. As far as dashcam, I personally prefer the FixcamX. Very nice camera and looks stock. I also intend on adding side steps. Mostly to clean my feet. I'm on the Eastern side and I'm concerned that tapping my feet on the rocker panels to clean them, might end up breaking the panels. Especially during this single digit weather we are having.
I agree with you on the camera. I’ve been thinking about putting on the Fixcam. I had the cam I have now in my CRV and just transferred it, but I hate where it’s at and that it takes some of my front view. I just don’t want the rear camera right in the middle of my rear window. Hard enough to see out of it without putting one more obstacle in the way… if I mount it anywhere outside of where the wiper blade is, I’m afraid it will just be blurred. How’s the rear cam for you??? And I have to bang my boots together to get off snow and muck while sitting sideways in the drivers seat so I don’t kick them off on the car… 🤔☹️ My roof racks really don’t create a lot of wind noise like the racks on my CRV did. Hate cutting down on mileage, but I use them all the time… and I just put on my ski racks for the season… I know they are killing my mileage and whistle a bit, but I’m a skier so sacrifices must be made!!! Thanks for the comments and observations! Cheers
@@richgibson1816 When I installed the rear camera, I used plastic rods to push level string through the headliner. I have the pano-sun roof so it was a pain, but work it. I messed up and centered the rear camera above the hatch. Looks great, but doesn't provide much of a view. I'm going to have to move it to one side. I was trying to find if there was a day to get the feed from the rear view camera as my rear Fitcam feed. I wanted the roof racks because I do a lot of home projects and they make taking lumber home much easier. But between the noise, and the height, it wasn't worth it and I took them off. Again, I think the pano roof contributes to the noise. This is my first Toyota and I'm happy with it. I upgraded from a Subaru, which I miss, but as I get closer to retirement, I wanted great mileage for trips. I feel your pain on the rear hitch. I'm in Eastern Washington and they wanted almost $2k including parts to install the hitch. Currently I'm going without, but I'll install one myself next year.

Wow! You’re welcome and hope the other little mods help you enjoy your ride even more! Cheers
There is a dash cam from FITCAMX that fits directly under the mirror, with a oem look. There is a front/back cam kit available. You should check it out.

Brilliant video, Rich; I thoroughly loved it. Your positive attitude and energy elevate it by a level.
Way to kind of you to say… thanks!!
@@richgibson1816 Kind words are due to you. I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend.
That’s the goal! And thanks for the kind words…appreciate it. Cheers
Your reverse led light turns night into daytime. Impressed
You my friend are very kind… thank you!
A lot of great added benefits to the rav4 with these upgrades. I am buying a 2023 hybrid and plan on a lot of what you shown in your video, thanks for sharing.
Somehow I missed your comment, sorry! But thanks and Merry Christmas!
I kept the original ones and I’ll swap them out in the summer to tow my boat, but winter is 100% Michelin time…
Cheers my friend!
I love that all the mods you did are super functional. Great job sir!
Thanks! They all get used and not a one I wouldn’t do again! Cheers my friend
nice demo on the added mid lights. Hard to get a visual on stuff like this at night and you've done well.
Thanks! Merry Christmas!
Very Nice Video. I have a 2021 Rav 4 Prime XSE, with some of the same mods, but you did make me think of some I didn't think of.
My Mods so far:
Fit Cam Frint dash cam - it integrates right into the rear-view mirror, so it looks like factory.
Hood Struts - So cool not to have to use that silly bar to hold up the hood
Side Mirror Sequential blinkers - Love those and much better to see in day & night
Replace all door switches with light up ones
Center console Rav4 cover - Keep from wearing out the material on the center console.
LED reverse and Rear turning(only) led lights - I noticed if you try to swap out the front turning lights with LED's you get hyper flashing. unless you put in an inline resistor.
Glove Box organizer
Horn - Absolutely had to get rid of the mousy horn with a real ones.
Keep up the good work. Thanks
Sounds like you got most of it done…nice! I need to do the hood struts! Hate having to use the silly bar!
All the best!
Really loved the screen shots of products! Made it real easy to reverse image and find the product!
@@Triskitty Hey! Glad it helped! Enjoy your ride… cheers!
Great video. I bought a 2001 RAV4 about a year ago and your video gives me some great ideas.
Hey thanks for that! I certainly love mine! Happy new year!
Great video! I just bought a new RAV4 and will be adding some of these modifications to my suv.
Really cool video. I am going to save this to a playlist and rewatch it when I get my rav4.
Glad you liked it and hope it helps! Cheers
Past that not much more to do…
Thanks for the details of everything you did.
Did you plug the qi charger into the USB port?
Thank you for putting in the pictures in the video. You do a great job explaining everything. Just ThankYou for everything you do!
Wow! Big compliment and you’re welcome! Cheers
Thanks Rich. I am in the process of purchasing a 2023 Rav4 that has not been delivered yet, and I can't wait to add some of your recommendations. Well done!

Very smart use of the cabinet bumpers!
Thanks! Drove me crazy that I couldn’t find the buttons without the bumpers. My Honda CRV you just pushed the light itself and it came on… it was a better design. Now I feel safe feeling for them to turn on the lights… cheers!

Thank you for your video! I'm anticipating buying a RAV this year and I'm definitely looking to put in the improvements to the reverse lighting and inside boot lighting as well.
Nice! Enjoy your new ride! Cheers
Did the TorkLift too. I dig that its higher than others. I didn't bother to trim the plastic though. It pushes up on it only slightly and seems fine to me. I used a kit from Uhaul for the wiring, Cheers.
Cool! Really glad to here it worked out for you. Cheers
Hi- where are the fake carbon fibre trim covers from? I would like to get these to cover up the reflection from the vent. Thanks
You certainly follow the Clark Griswold approach to exterior illumination.

One mod or all of them, you’ll love your ride!!! Love mine! Cheers!
Those cabinet bumpers were a stroke of genius. I’ve been looking to find some sort of brail stickers to help find the switches while driving but those seem to be the a solid and inexpensive option.
Cool! And they are clear so they don’t stick out in a bad way. Cheers!
I drive blind too. Brail stickers are the bomb.
Nice! I use all the ones I put on all the time. Toyota really should make them standard… cheers
Thank you for sharing information about the Toyota Rav 4. The Toyota Rav 4 is getting more comfortable to drive
Yay! I agree! Be well, cheers

So I got the silicone wipers… PERFECT!!! Got them before the worst of winter gets here. I’ll never use Costco wipers after this… thanks for the tip!
Very interesting as I am about to get a 2020 Rav4. Fortunately the previous owner put front and rear dashcams on.
On thing I like to do on all of my cars, is put an anti reflective cover on the dashboard
to stop a head up display when the sun is shining. I think there are custom covers
available, but I often get an old black T-Shirt and cut it to suit, holding it in place with
some blu-tac. It really improves the forward vision.
Talk about functional and effective. I have an older 2011 model and have these same issues. Seems they need to change more than the outside of these
Tell me about it… I’m installing puddle lights on mine tonight. Truly a grand undertaking to mount and wire. 🤬
On my brothers Subaru, puddle lights are standard… So I love my Rav 4, but they did go cheap on a bunch of stuff.

These are some really great accessories! One thing you didnt show that I am planning to install is an Auto-start-stop eliminator to permanently disable the auto start stop which I absolutely hate. Amazon also has this available and its just a small harness that plugs inline to the switch under the climate controls.

Cheers!
Just bought a 23 rav4 definitely doing some mods !
Congratulations! You’ll love your Rav 4 and I hope some or all the mods make it better and safer… cheers!
Mine was the Kmc wheels, ko2 tires and autoClover chrome delete.
And I have to bang my boots together to get off snow and muck while sitting sideways in the drivers seat so I don’t kick them off on the car… 🤔☹️
My roof racks really don’t create a lot of wind noise like the racks on my CRV did.
Instead of kicking the rocker panels to remove snow from your boots, tap them together like Dorothy going home from Oz 😊
Great video . Thank you for the suggestions.
