  • Part 9 - RC & BOILER INSTALLATION. A Walking Beam steam engine model ship.
A look at what's going on inside my scratch built Hudson River Steamship Model "Thomas Powell" to eventually bring "Her" to life...
The Hudson River side-wheeler "Tom Powell" or "Swan of the Hudson", as she was then called, was believed to be, in 1846, the fastest steamboat in the world!
She could easily sail at 22.5mph! (35.5km/h or 19.5 knots!)
Lawrence & Sneden built the wooden hull at New York.
The hull of my model is made of brass.
    About the Boilers:
During her life, Steamer Thomas Powell got at least 3 new sets of return flue Boilers, placed on the guards. They were made of Iron and consumed anthracite coal.
Because of the much greater weight (proportionally of course!) of the return flue Boilers of my model, they are placed in the hull.
They are made of 316 Stainless Steel.
I made all the necessary tubings, flanges and bushings, then had the Boilers professionally TIG welded.
They were then filled with water and tested at 10Bar/150PSI.
Stainless Steel Is usually not recommended for Building Large 120 PSI Steam Boilers, but small Boilers are perfectly safe for our low pressure model boats!
(Professional Autoclave and Coffee machine Boilers are made of 316 Stainless Steel!)
I designed and crafted this model as a ''one-off''. Plans I drew for this paddle wheeler and it's engine are not for sale!
    Music : Henry Tucker (1826-1882)
    Thanks for watching!

I could never have the motivation or effort to even *draw* something that accurately, let alone build it from scratch!

You have built a fantastic machine. Watching you assemble the steam plant shows how much thought was put into her build. It looks elegant and easy to work on. Well done !

      Thank you!
The most difficult thing is keeping everything simple!...
Being a scratch built, live steam paddle wheel model builder yourself, your comments are all the more appreciated!...I hope you'll build another one once you get that Dory back on the trailer!
