"Fanny and Alexander" is one of my favorite movies and the Bishop is one of the best written villains I've ever seen in a movie. He reminds me a lot of Frollo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" as he has a callous yet eerie charisma to him while at the same time is a self-righteous, lascivious, hypocritical psycho pervert. This scene is especially well filmed and acted, you can feel Alexander's bravery and pain all at once.

Oddly and creepy enough the Bishop reminds me of Judge Claude Frollo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Both are old yet eerily callous, domineering, and perverted antagonists who command attention and turn your stomach at the same time.
Bishop was surrounded ENTIRELY by women-his mother, aunt, sister, and maid-before he married the Widow Frau Ekdahl!!! Don’t take this the wrong way, BUT… 1.) The good news for HIM is, he gets a stepdaughter as a “bonus” for marrying the Widow Ekdahl; 2.) The bad news for BOTH the Bishop AND Alexander, is the former gets the latter (comes w/ the territory, as they say…☹️!!!)… Clearly, Bishop Hypocrite here sees Alexander as a threat to his [predominant] little patriarchal structure here…🤨!!!
@@abinashmishra329 I think the Bishop had an underlying erotic interest in Alexander judging from how he speaks to and touches him in the scenes they're both in, not to mention the way the creep looks at him even though he knows it's "sinful."
@@Mannansh-ve5zk probably, that would also explain why he keeps grabbing him and just overall being extremely weird in the way he interacts with him. it might also tie in with why hes so quick to physically harm him because although this is not exactly the same: it reminds me of how sometimes fathers that are attracted to their daughters will beat her over the smallest things because they have this mentality that she deserves to be punished for "making" him feel like that. maybe there was a similar mentality to that in this situation

This is set in about 1910, where this sort of thing was common the world over and would have been legal. However the country it was set in Denmark has long since banned corporal punishment, whereas it's legal in America (one of the few western countries that still allows it).
In the time period the film is set, what is considered Child Abuse today was seen as setting bad children right in the early 20th century. Yes it was brutal and cruel, but that's how adults made sure kids "learned" to behave. Anyone who has ever been spanked as a kid can also attest to that.
After watching the movie closely a few times, it's obvious the bishop has a pedophilic interest in Alexander judging by his domineering and possessive behavior and tone used towards the boy.
