  • Rain Bird introduced the No. 14 model of impact sprinkler in the early 1960’s to serve the agricultural market. When compared to the model 20 1/2” bronze impact sprinkler that served a similar space at that time, the 14 was a lighter weight, less expensive (and potentially less durable) option.
I show three variants of the No 14 in this video, and I hope you enjoy seeing these unsung impact sprinklers in action. Thanks for watching!

Great video of the No. 14’s. Enjoyed hearing about the information about them. It certainly does seem like that there are various changes in the designs in the Rainbird sprinklers over the years from many different model numbers. Thanks for sharing these treasures for us to enjoy.

Thanks! This was only a small sampling of images of the impacts Rain Bird made. I need to convince a friend with a larger collection to do a complete Rain Bird impacts video with me some day. It would probably be two hours long, though.

Very nice selection of Rain bird 14 series impacts! That RB 1974 catalog is awesome! I figure there had to be at least 105 different brass/aluminum Rain Bird impacts.

Thanks. I bet you’re right about the number of brass/aluminum impacts Rain Bird made. When I was adding them up, I totally forgot the entire family of Turf Birds.

This is one of my favorite models. I was not aware of the two different spoon arm models as I have the wedge model. I am surprised how much they are like the basic 20 model, and why they have both the 14 and 20 models as them seem to have the same likeness. I was surprised how much quicker the aluminum or metal arm model was than the brass arm model. I was also surprised by the squared off design on the metal arm versus the rounded design on the brass arm. I also had no idea that his model had such a old history. The wedge model is definitely my favorite, and had never seen that design back in the 60's, when I got so personally involved in the sprinkler world that I practically lived for. I knew about the model 20, but not 14. I learned about the model 14 about a year ago. Thank you for sharing.

They also made a model that might have had a third lever style (can't get a clear enough look to be sure), but definitely had a plastic bearing on it.

I wish you'd show the AG sprinklers in low pressure scenarios better. It was common for them to have to operate low pressure because the line would get overloaded with too many. Its for this reason that the springs tended to be tuned for low pressure operation in the lower model numbers. The 20's were tuned for 40-60 psi, while the 30s for 50-60 and so forth.
Many of these low numbered models shined when the pressure would drop in that they'd keep rotating and not just spinning on the bearing.
Thanks for the content though. I miss having my old Rain bird catalogs, circa 1976 from Rain Bird, Champion, Nelson and one other, given to me at age 8 by the civil engineer across the street.

That would be a cool catalog collection. I can dial the pressure back on the ag stuff. Show them at 20/35/55 psi. Might not always get that top end on the bigger stuff, but I can dial it back.

Great information as usual really enjoyed watching them run especially in slo mo! interestingly were they trying to save money (brass) by using mental and adding the brass counter weight on the metal arm 14 or was there a certain need in the market? The weight was used to both reduce arm swing into the out of stream position where you don't want the arm to swing out so much the spoon impacts the body causing a reversing action then it adds power and momentum to re-enter the stream and slow rotation. Lots of plastic impacts that are not weighted will try to accomplish this with arm tension and very short arms, ultimately they end up running very fast and beat themselves up quickly.
Congrats on surpassing 500 subscribers and expanding the love of old birds!

Thanks, Frank! Appreciate the explanation of the counterweight. It makes perfect sense. Not at all surprised you knew that!

Nice 14s. I have the 14VH. Its a fast little impact and when put on my spike with the pipes and valve it gets out there pretty far. I believe the wedge was used for frost protection ? Correct if im wrong. These are good impacts! Yours look like new! Thank you for sharing !

Thanks! Yep. Some wedge drives are for frost protection. The wedge helps with rotation in tough conditions. In the case of the 14V, I’m less sure about the frost protection because the spring isn’t covered and could get fouled up with ice.

Hi. Thank you. I am not involved in the installation of irrigation equipment any longer and would not want to present myself as an expert.
