This is awesome. I love that in the weightlifting competition they simply pass the weightlifting belt back and forth between the competitors. Simpler times.

The Superstars competition was awesome. Great athletes from different sports in action.

8:20 "short on style, but so long on hustle!", "he leaves the ballpark after a moment like this without rancor" ... Maybe he's just rushing out to get on the phone with his bookie.

"The Superstars" initially ran in 1973 as a one time special.
The next year, ABC lost NBA basketball (to CBS) and expanded "Superstars" to a series that would run for several weeks each winter.
Amazingly, "Superstars" was so popular that it forced the NHL off of NBC and very nearly forced the NBA off of CBS.

OJ is still the greatest. The way he sliced through any defense was amazing.

Competion dates were February 25-26 of 1974 in Rotonda West, FL. Doesn't make sense that John Havlicek or Jim McMillan could have participated since was during the NBA schedule.

Thanks for posting! I started watching sports in 1980, however I never watched the Superstars, so this re-run is my first viewing of a full competition. A few thoughts: As a Canadian, I could have sworn Kyle Rote Jr. was Denis Shapovalov, during his tennis matches (his appearance - not his skills/game). The athletes looked different - less muscled - yet still strong - I was surprised to see OJ press 255 and Rose press 200! The winnings, especially for Kyle must have been huge - not just due to inflation, but because they didn't make huge salaries then. Now, with salaries as they are, players likely wouldn't want to do these, and owners would definitely not allow them to put themselves at risk (the obstacle course is a prime example). Of all the athletes, Pete Rose was the most ungrateful loser. It was cool to see fans right behind the athletes. Announcers could ride the players a bit while still keeping a positive spirit.

Especially Klye, whose contract with the tornado was for $1600.00.

Great to see you're back! Think Goodwill Games 1990, Pan Ams 1991, etc, could pop up in the future (boxing stuff such as Reno 1986 World Championships) ? Thanks again! Best regards.

Gee, I sure hope they catch the person who killed O.J. Simpson's wife. Who could it be? Perhaps one of the athletes participating in this event?

I lived in Charlotte Harbor back then and the Superstar Competitions were the biggest joke ! The developers of itself housing development spent a few million trying to get that place off the ground and who knows how much the television companies lost.
It still sits out there in know where land. If you are interested in living in no-where land I'm sure you can buy a piece of forgotten,
    History ?

Don't look like a joke to me. I remember watching these back in the 70s with my Dad. How motivational for a young boy! Also look how many fans are present. This will never happen today and we all know why! This was a successful event. Great memories! O j. was a awesome athlete and I never realized how strong he was for a small back!

@@Chet_Brinkley Their coaches, agents, ect. wouldn't want them to risk injuries. Today's athletes make to much money and they all have huge egos. Watch the pro bowl or all star games. They are the joke!
