  • Fort Santiago, located within the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila, Philippines, has a rich history dating back to the Spanish colonial period. It was built in the late 16th century, around 1571, shortly after the Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi founded the city of Manila.
Fort Santiago served as a defensive structure to protect the newly established city against invasions and attacks from foreign powers and local insurgents. Over the centuries, it underwent several renovations and expansions, with significant enhancements made during the Spanish colonial era, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The fort played a crucial role in Philippine history, serving as a military stronghold, a seat of political power, and a symbol of Spanish authority in the region. It also served as a prison during various periods, including the Spanish and American colonial periods, and was infamous for its role in incarcerating Filipino nationalist leader José Rizal before his execution in 1896.
