The one purpose sheep have in life is to find the most ways to die from my experience!! We have Lincoln longwools and they constantly amaze me with their resourcefulness of finding ways to get stuck in fences, get stuck on their backs and be fine one minute and at deaths door the next. Never a dull moment that’s for sure!! Blue spray is the stock farmers friend along with baler band and works on all livestock whether it be dogs, cats children or even farmyard animals🙂🙂 looking forward to your lambs mate, defo a sign of spring👍🏻☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
    Thanks
    Pete

I use bergon and ball goat hoof trimmers for my sheeps hooves. they are pretty reasonably priced here in new England, and they are nice and compact. added bonus, once they wear out you can still cut shrub branches with them.

Who needs a first aid kit! All you need in farm vehicles is blue/purple spray and a roll of electrical tape! Used that method thousands of time and it's never once got infected! Some things you will learn about sheep is that they're not as stupid as they make out. If there's a hole in the fence they WILL find it. The only thing sheep are good at is dying, one day they're running around fine, the next theyre dead. Keep a bottle of calcium solution handy, was told a quick way to get them back around if they're down 20 ml in the gut then 40 in the armpit under skin. Only used it once normally under skin works but I've seen it done several times. Should give their back ends and inside of legs a clip before they lamb makes it cleaner and less chance if infection to sheep and lamb. 👍🏻

1:17 mind them hitting the gate or they get a hurt. Happened to one ewe and she had two huge lambs that where pure rotten and she got a dogging getting them out she ended up dead because of blood poisoning a day later...

Hi tom, best way to do sheep’s feet is to give them a long acting antibiotic, bit of spray if necessary but by no means trim them back as it can actually make them much worse, tried it on our flock at home and definitely works a lot better and is a lot less hassle!

tip 1: we also have sheeps and we always cut the hooves of the sheep before they go outside. that's really super useful and it's better for the sheeps and lambs inside to do it trimming after the birth
tip 2: on Google and TH-cam is a lot of useful information about sheeps so check that for sure out. and this year on my channel will come more sheep video's so i hope you will like it

I would avoid tipping heavily pregnant ewes Tom, it could come back and bite you in the bum, if she's a bit lame, leave her until after you take her out of the lambing pen. (Don't clip in the pen either you could spread the rot) Hygiene is key to successful lambing.p.s. I hate sheep :-)

Howdo Tom, big fan of your videos, great insight into everyday farming life and coming from a shepherd from the Lake District it is particularly interesting to see what the crac is in the dairy industry. No idea on best foot trimmers, to be honest I don’t think they differ too much. As for treating lame sheep though we have found that the best way to treat is a dose of alamycin intramuscular and loxicom under the skin, then spraying with Taf spray...this stuff is amazing and seems to work so much better than blue engermycin spray! Leave them for a day then get them into a foot bath of formalin and run them through it a few times, if you are using zinc make sure to hold them in the bath for at least 15 mins otherwise it doesn’t work!!! Also we are being told by vets now to only trim when necessary as it can spread infection about, but obviously if something is hanging off then that’s a different story! Great vid once again, hope lambing goes well!

Yep, always wear your waterproofs handling sheep. Another tip: look at absolutely everything, even something that looks completely safe and make sure they cannot hurt themselves on it. Because they will find a way. We've had sheep stuck in feeders and breaking their legs, stuck in the gaps between the bars on a gate, stuck in any sort of fencing, the gap between a water trough and a post. The grass is always greener on the other side!!😂 😂 If you want them to filter into another field overnight or something, leave the gate only very slightly open, they think they are escaping and will be straight through it. It actually works!! Unlike leaving the gate wide open of course, which doesn't work. But then sheep will be sheep! So there's your penny's worth of free advice and I've been there and done that! 😂 😂 😂 GOOD LUCK.

I have learnt to separate the the wool before you put the needle in this just stops u missing the skin and getting the wool into the skin and around the needle

Definitely don't turn them over in lamb and toe clippers are just as dangerous remember holding a ewe when she moved my boss stabbed me straight in the leg if there was ever a competition for running away from a angry shepherd with a blood soaked leg my boss beat it that day by a mile !!! funny enough my leg got the blue spray treatment

  • @russellmiller3660
    @russellmiller3660 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Keep using blue spray on yourself I do. P.s I'm sure you have gathered by other comments not to flip heavy in lamb ewes over. Your farming practices on everything else are Bob on. Milk heard are well looked after and seem to do well. Keep up the good farming.

Using the same Needles seems to be a risk of spreading something between them.

Tom 30 The people who dislike probably don’t like the blood factor and the fact he sprayed it with Terramycin. I’ve done that before though.

Mr Nixon used to say, "Both hands behind the cutting edge".
Although, he was a woodwork teacher and never trimmed sheep's feet.
But still, none of us ever cut our hands.
