  • In today’s episode we try out a new format: EXPIRED.
    We shoot one roll of expired film and show you the results to celebrate the variety film photography used to offer and the unique effects that can be created when shooting expired film. These shots will be almost impossible to reproduce since they depend not just on the light in a specific moment but also on the unique characteristics of a former film stock past its prime.
    For this first episode, we are shooting Kodak Elitechrome, a color slide film directed at consumers and optimized for shooting well-saturated landscapes and nature in general. This film does not perform well for portraits but really used to shine for colorful scenes. Let’s see what we can bring out of this roll of Kodak Elitechrome today.
    I found this film in the basement when looking for accessories of my father’s old Minolta XD-7. The film was in a box that he had sent me along with the camera a couple of years ago when I started out shooting film. What better camera could we use to expose the film than the Minolta XD-7 in its aperture priority mode. This is the camera that my dad used to capture almost all of my childhood images and it works perfectly fine until today.
    Let’s give it a try and look at the results.
    Gear used:
    Minolta XD-7 with
    50mm f/1.4 MD Rokkor
    58mm f/1.2 MC Rokkor
    24-35mm f/3.5 MD Zoom
    Film used:
    Kodak Elite Chrome 100

    My partner has some Elite Chrome in the freezer, also found hidden in a box in their father's basement from 2005ish.
    Looks like the weather this time of year would be the perfect time to put in their XD7!

    Very interesting results - I like it. It is always satisfying to see the Minolta being used again. LIke you, a very personal connection (so many images of my daughter since birth were taken with a Minolta camera and Rokkor lens). The shot at 4:53 is why so many people shoot expired film... simply, an awesome result. Great job guys ! I love the new format as well. Thanks,

    I assume you exposed at the rated speed of 100 iso? Your results were surprising. I have a number of rolls of Elite Chrome and VS (same film, Elite Chrome was the consumer packaging). These expired in 2012 and have been cold stored since they were new. They have lost about 1/2 stop. But when the exposure is adjusted accordingly, the images look fine.

    Hey guys, great episode! You always find such interesting places for your photowalks. I just bought an old TLR that came with a roll of Plus -X with 8 frames left. I shot it but sadly it was pretty far gone and the negatives are very low contrast. You seem to have had better luck and caught some interesting effects. I watch all of your stuff - I find it all very interesting.

    Color reversal is so limited to any play with light. You need to expose your film spot on. Adding the fact i5s expired and you don’t really know what condition the roll is, it makes it very difficult to achieve any really decent photographs. However, it’s lots of fun experimenting. Color negative film is a bit more forgiving. EliteChrome was definitely one of the best reversal films ever. It’s something that would be a great hit if ever brought back.

    Great video!! Interesting colour shift with the film. Good to see it worked out considering how hit and miss expired film can be. And, especially slide film. I like this format and hope to see more of it in the future. Just don't go buying any Kodak Aerochrome to try out, otherwise you'll have to take out a loan to pay it off!!!

  • @mjones410
    @mjones410 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another lovely episode. With respect to the colour processing it seems like the lab used the existing film curves for kodak elite chrome 100, without doing adjustments. Or maybe it's just me. But if I take a screen grab and reset the blue channel back to 0-255 the photos no longer have the blue cast.

    I had shot one roll of Kodak Ektachrome E100vs expired in 2004, it had same color shift that you show in the video, but the film got a great colors when shot in strong sunlight, especially in yellow and red.

  • @JacyEberlein
    @JacyEberlein 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Last year I purchased several rolls of expired slide film, and in that batch was a roll of Elite Chrome 100 of the same vintage of 2004, which I shot this spring. Oddly enough, now that that roll has come back from the lab, the colour shift is much lower than the roll you shot. Perhaps mine was stored in better conditions.
    In fact, your roll looks closer in colour to the rolls of Ektachrome I shot while on vacation in Spain in December, and those expired in 1988!

    I have shot Fuji Velvia that is 12 years old that was freezer stored the entire time. I shot it at box speed and the images were perfect. Perfect exposures and no colour shifts. I have about 20 rolls of Velvia that I bought 3 years ago (so now expired) but I have a dedicated mini freezer for storing all my film. I now know that it will last for ages with minimal degradation if stored frozen. I am guessing this roll of Kodak Elite Chrome was not stored on ice!!

  • @weisserth

    I got ten rolls of Kodak Elite Chrome, still shrink wrapped packaged as a block of ten. I am currently shooting Agfa Ct Precisa slide film bought around the same time. The results are great, I am not seeing the weird color shifts you're seeing in your images. Both my Agfa and Kodak have been stored the same way, so I expect the Kodak to be as stable. We'll see.

    I have never tried expired films. But I did shoot a few rolls of Elitechrome in my Lomo LC-A back in around 2003-2005 and cross-processed them (the popular lomography thing to do back then). This film, which also came in 400iso version, was the best for cross-processing in my opinion because the colors stayed the same but only got much more vivid and contrasty (blues, reds and greens would really pop) - compared to fuji slide films that usually shifted into a single dominant color cast - green or purple. I would absolutely not cross-process fresh slide films now, but maybe consider it if I had long expired slide film to play with.

    Any advice?
    Very cool photos. I also recently received a 20 year old kodak ektachrome from a stranger at the market here in Tallinn, Estonia. We were both shooting a pop-up vinyl market and started talking. At the end of our conversation he gifted me the aforementioned film. He gave me some instructions but I don't remember all of it. Just remember that he said overcast day would be great. I have never shot a slidefilm before. Every advice is appreciated. One of my friends said I should try both Iso 75 and boxspeed.
    Thanks

    Nach so vielen Jahren fehlt dem Film die Grundschwärze.(Eine gute Grundschwärze war bei z.B.Agfa Farbdiafilmen bei der Produktentwicklung Bedingung für eine neutrale Farbwiedergabe)Einen ähnlichen Effekt haben wir auch bei sehr gealterten TV-Farbbildröhren: Statt schwarz nur noch ein sehr transparentes flaues grau.

    Online consensus is to give it one extra stop of exposure for every decade it has expired. Did you shoot at box speed or make any adjustment?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is correct for color negative film and black and white film. Yet, for slide film it is generally recommended to shoot at box speed which we did here. Nevertheless, it seems like the film could have taken a bit more light in this case. :)

    Very, very interesting expired effect. Looks almost as drug - induced 🤣
    I remember that film, I've used it a lot in the early 90's when it launched.
    And yes, I have a lot of expired slide film stored (yep, most of them expired around 2004.), but my films are cold stored, in the deep freeze most of the time, so when I pull out one of them and shoot it, the results are almost as if the film was fresh.

    Scanning imposes its own need for colour decisions, doesn't it? Whether a lab applies manual adjustments or relies on automatic procedures there is no absolute right or wrong with colour. Clearly the expired film has its own signature, but exactly what that signature is allowed to be, and the extent of many shifts, is a consequence of decisions applied in the lab and post scan. When scanning in date colour film I, myself, find I'm having to make radical decisions on the colour balance. Perhaps your images here could have been presented in many different ways with different "looks."

  • @aussiecryptomaniac
    @aussiecryptomaniac 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OK that was nice, as usual well shot video. However, please, please, please if you plan shooting expired film ALWAYS shoot cold-stored or frozen film so people can see the true colour palette of these gorgeous expired films. It take more digging, but you will find it if you try. Kodak Elite Chrome 100 EBX was the prosumer 35mm version of Kodak's E100 VS (Vivid Saturation, and reports state that it was made from the 120 and sheet film rolls that didn't come up to Kodak's full specs. Released in 1991 to compete with the success of Fujifilm's Velvia line it stayed in production until March 2012; so there is 2014 expiry film available. I've shot E100VS frozen with 2014 expiry and it was good as new. By the way, after Kodak ceased production of their famous Kodachrome National Geographic photographers like Steve McCurry shifted over to E100 VS.
    Thomas Danhausser, who was Product Development Engineer - Ektachrome photographic films at Kodak in Rochester from July 1986 - June 2000 wrote to me that …
    "EBX (EliteChrome Extra Color 100) was the consumer version of Ektachrome E100VS. I was part of the R&D team that created these films; the films were first commercialized in 1999. I was a member of product development teams responsible for the successful design of four new Ektachrome color slide films that were first commercialized in 1999".
