- This year I am painting one space marine intercessor a month in a randomly determined style and colour scheme. This month I attempt to match the style of my favourite painter, @demonrich, and in the process unpick what makes his style work. Oh, and it's a White Scar.

Naturally the White Scars marine went faster than the other chapters
I love this style. Never been a huge fan of the extreme edge highlights, it always makes marines look neon to me idk
This is the way
I think you did very well. Only big difference is that his mini has a way smoother uniform base color. I think most defining element of his style is no edge highlights which is quite unique approach in warhammer painting 😀
Ha today i found your mini painting channel! This is a great series! I might give it a go myself using a box of MKVI marines and trying every legion for heresy.
For Jaghatai, For Chogoris, For the Khagan, For the Emperor!
wait i need to wait a nother month for the next episode!
keep it up like this difrent type of video and that you push in you hobby!
Fantastic work as always! I really love this series
Absolutely adorable your videos, especially these, they're always very interesting and very enjoyable
Looks Amazing Simon! I absolutely love this series and its always the highlight of my day. I can't wait to try some Silver Templars or Celestial Lions in the style of your NMM Ultramarine, and now I gotta add this scheme to the list too!
Love your “painterly” style. Your videos are really fun to watch. You should definitely do more ✨
Great to see another Exe alumni in the hobby as well. Hope the lemmy and the imperial are still there. Great video on both teaching the technical aspects of painting and on the painting itself! Subscribed, keep up the great work!
Love those eyes. The glow looks very convincing.
Surprisingly it looks really good. Really interesting series.
First video of yours I see. Very nice flow! Subscribed :)
Think you nailed the style. Great job
The airbrush sounds like you could do with a bigger needle. 0.15 seems very small to me. I've always used 0.4 and been able to do everything with it including small detail and priming.
Richards style well the miniatures you showed off immediately reminded me of Marco Frisoni. He's another high level painter you should look into even though he's not on your list. 👌
I second Marco Frisoni as well. Amazing color theory, and absolutely wonderful screen presence.
Great paintjob. I believe Richard's brush is a bit more moist, while stippling the main colors on, therefore yours looks a bit more dry and textured, compared to his smoother armor blends. Other than that, it's pretty close. The glow of the eyes is very well executed. I think I'd have gone with a different color though, to contrast more with the white armor. The light blue hue is very close to the white, but maybe it's just in the picture and it stands out more in reality.
Good point!
Verrryyy cool
You can brush a thick layer of matt varnish over the mini at the end. It will even out the finish and you wont get that chalky look.
Awesome. Waiting for the black and white imperial fist i mean black templar
Very cool
You allright? Been a while
Bro, loved the video but you could have spent some time showing us how you did some of the smaller details...for me, how did you do the eyes?? They look awesome...i want to see that!!
Told ya to use a blue!!! Jokes aside, amazing work!
With the next video still on the way I am going to spitball retro-hammer for the style.
RG is my inspiration as well. Follow his imp fists for my heresy army and getting great results. He is so very very good at what he does and his long form on patreon is incredible.
I have that same Harder & Steenbeck airbrush and TBH I barely use it anymore. The issue isn't the airbrush, it's the needle size. Just like hand brushes, using too of small brush will make painting _more_ difficult. It's why so many professional mini painters use a size 2 or 3 (depending on the brand) but many people when they first get into mini painting think they need a 000 size brush. Same with the airbrush. It's why Angel Giraldez constantly says "you only need a size 0.4 needle". The problem is that paint just can't get through when you use a 0.15 needle but a 0.4 needle will push _anything_ through it. I still can't wrap my head around only using a 0.4 needle so I almost universally use a 0.2 needle now. All that stuff (pressure and trigger control) will fall into place if you just up your needle size.
This is great advice and tbh confirms what I suspected - thank you!
@@SimonClarkErrata anytime 😄
Frankly, I'm embarrassed at how long it took me to figure this out lol 😖
For your 0.15 needle, dit you ever tried to swap it for a 0.2? That makes paint so much better (and the finest line between the two isn’t visible by eye) 0.15 needles work best with inks (or something whitout pigments particle’s)
I don’t say it can be done paint with a .15 needle, but it is hard, as you experienced
bro i can't even hardly use my micro tip on the airbrush it's making me insane. normal tip that came with the badger is fantastic, but too large for anything other than base layers, varnish, and maybe inks...
I'm not a high degree painter but I feel like I'm probably above average for tabletop standard.
I've tried painting in Richards style, following his tutorials roughly.
His style looks easy when you watch it, but it's so damn hard.
It's definitely not a beginner friendly style. If you don't do it just right the model looks pretty rough at the end.
Him you said around 1:50 about your edge highlting guide, mind linking that ?
Thank you baby of Duncan Rhodes and Ray Romano
Simon, you're beautiful.
8:45 my god the mini is being lit by the light of 1000 suns . You might wanna adjust your camera settings, because there is no point in showing the mini if we can't see anything.
The airbrush speckling doesn't matter in this style, also he doesn't fix pigment powders and niether should anyone, since it dulls them down a LOT.
Ah I should have been clearer there - I used two different powders on the base in different places, not mixed together
Not sure what exactly you are doing wrong with your airbrush, but Harder and Steenbeck just released their new Ultra 2024 model, which was specifically engineered to help beginners learn how to use a paint brush. And even if you are not a beginner it has some really nice features that just make it very comfortable to use. Plus, it's half the price of an Infinity.
Hi, I'm not Richard Grey but I play him on TV and Disney +. Anyway, you did an excellent job and look forward to next months mini. Excelsior.
Can I click "Don't Recommend Channel" in response to yet another stupid pixellated clickbait thumbnail? Hell yeah.
I mean sure? If you consider this clickbait then godspeed being on the internet
@@SimonClarkErrata don't know what this is about. The thumbnail shows exactly what is says, a picture of Richard grays mini and a pixilated picture of yours. I for one enjoyed the video. Well done!
