I've always looked at the huge cost difference between bare boards and populated ones and said "I'll just make it myself". And then I don't know enough about the circuit to read an abbreviated BOM list and fill in the presumptions. And I go to solder and I overheat and lift traces. Fried a Blue Pill and a WeMOS D1 Mini last night by reconnecting a wire wrong. Still can't figure out how to program them. ... And those pre-built boards are starting to look more and more attractive. If the price drops because of the new board supplier, all the better. 'Course, in for a penny in for a pound, sunk costs and all, I"m so far behind I can't quit now. The good news is that once I've discovered all the mistakes that are possible to make, the only way left to do it will be the right way and it'll have to work!

Excellent dissertation on jlpcb’s population system. Thanks for taking your time to teach this. Mysteries, resolved.

Great stuff Damien. I've used JLCPCB for several board designs and have been very pleased with their service. I haven't used used their board population service because my BOMs are more for design than manufacturing. This looks really promising. I'll be at the front of the queue for the Lexus GS450H board if you have those done this way.

I looked at using PCBway's SMT assembly service for one of my designs, they price it according to how many individual parts are used.
As the design has 8 different parts, but uses 100 in total, the price was quite a lot more than their advertised special.
I'll have to look at JLCPCB's offering, as the alternative is to order two stencils so I can populate half the board at a time (it's OK to reflow a board twice).
Hand placing 100 parts in under 2 hours really does my back in.

I've used JLCPCB's assembly service once and it did work. You explained the gist of it quite well. They made all the errors exactly as I told them in 10 boards!
I've fixed one board so far. It's almost not worth it to even fix these as I could order a new batch without the errors for 200€ and throw these on the parts shelf, saving hours of my life. But it just seems so wrong.

    Worst cat video ever.
But as someone who has a project cat..uh car, awaiting a powerplant plan, this is really great news for a EV conversion consideration. Thank You for all that you are doing.

Excellent News and progress! I just went through this process with your Tesla Charger board and PCBway.com. Hopefully the non-matching components that I chose as replacements work out correctly...since I don't know what I'm doing. Some of these companies also offer "kit" links that we could click on to simply order what you've placed and then it gives you a commission. That's where I'd love to see this go so that you are rewarded for your hard work!

Hi Damien, i found your TH-cam channel in search of information on ev conversion. You have a lot of knowledge about this andI find your videos rather entertaining. At the moment I'm working on an electric motorbike project.
For my work I'm make a lot of pcb designs, the proto boards I solder by hand but for manufacturing I have a very good and cheap partner in China. I have also tried the smt service from jlcpcb and the manufacturing is very good but the problem of one sided, limited parts and no through hole component make them not very attractive for most of my boards.
This manufacture partner I have sources the parts them self and they can do that very cheap or you can send your own parts if you like. They do all the work and make the complete board for a very low price. And you can make the design how you want it and not make a design how the manufacturer can make it.
If you like I can bring you in contact with them? Maybe it can be interesting.
    Happy pcb😉

Very informative. I wish there was something like that in the USA for reasonable cost. Meanwhile, is there any way to get the volume up on your mic/camera? I have the laptop and TH-cam both cranked up to 11 and can barely hear you.

A great insight into pcb design. I feel your frustration. I think it is pretty much the same for any online solution. Great until you run into a problem. Any idea on when they will be available, have a toyota inverter at the ready in the garage somewhere.!

Four years ago I've started my EV project, 25kW motor cost me ~600$ and Curtis 1236 cots me ~400$. Time goes and now at local scrapyard they sell Prius gen 2 50kW gearbox and inverter together for 300$ =[ Now I looking up for selling my parts and buy prius ones. Damien, how much will prius gen 2 board cost?
Oh, nevermind, just got to openinverer forum and figured it all up=) Will leave this comment for a youtube algoritms.

Thanks for all of your work, I've been following it for a couple of years now. A question about the Toyota/Lexus systems. I'm interested in an AWD setup using the Lexus RX Hybrid system, which has an MG1 and MG2 in the front drive unit, and a MGR1 rear drive unit. Is it possible to do a design for such a 3 motor setup? Thanks!

At those prices, you would have to be a total masochist to order and assemble it yourself. Been using Designspark for a few years to design off-grid inverter PCB's because it is free to do larger PCB's such as 300mm X 200mm that I use.

    Hello Damien Maguire,
I would like to recommand a car for your next ev conversion if you are ok with it.
The car is the Mazda RX 8, its a rotary engine car, its a pretty looking car with sucide doors, those rotary motor have a high chance of running bad so you can get a RX 8 with bad motor for really cheap price ( under 1000 euros sometimes).
I hope you read this, i love your work and your videos.
    Have a nice day.
