Truly one of the best talents never discovered. THe original Neighborhoods, DAve, Jim, and careful Mike on drums. If you ever saw them live........Dave was a natural talent...total stage presents, and JIm complimented him so well. Jim was the best fit for Bass, his brother helped manage, and roadied early on. We opened up for them many times. At Rusty nail and other venues. THe world just wasnt ready for them .they were before their time......seriously, one of the best 3 piece bands in the country in the early 80's..... I can still see Daves big singing smile, and that glare in his eyes .......he was radiant, and expelled gobs of energy on stage....."Mr Reeves "was one of my favorite songs....some tunes were like a freight train out of control.....and then the sticky sweet "Prettiest Girl" would just suck everyone in ......they had a great sound ...his guitar sounded like violent bells crashing out one bold melody after another, mixed in with playful lyrics, and a sarcastic flare......Raw entertainment for a rebel soul......Man!!
Actually Hoodwinked was on Atlantic Records. Da Hoods were neither quite punk or metal, a step in the metal direction would have done wonders for airplay. Program directors and a&r execs needed to know how to market you into MTV. Once you get on tour you can do what you like. I got my knee dislocated (slipped on a lime from someones gin and tonic) beating on a-holes from Rocket in the moshpit at their Living Room release party for Fire Is Coming. Hoods drew almost as well as the Ramones at the Living Room. Insanity and hilarity always ensued.
Awesome video. I had forgotten all about the big hair version of Dave Minehan! I saw the Hoods so many times. Loved them. Probably saw them as many times at the Living Room in Providence as I did in Boston. Even saw them open for the Replacements at the 930 Club in DC around this time or '86. Thanks for sharing. This is a true piece of Boston rock n roll gold. Miss the Hoods and I miss the Rat. And I miss being young!!
This is breathtaking. I saw the 'hoods about a dozen times back in the day, it never got tired. Listening to this there could have been no Mission of Burma without the Neighborhoods - not in song construction, but in instrument sound. Because they couldn't get out of their own way they didn't have the impact on the world they had in Boston. They should have been big. I say this as someone who listened to everything that came out from '77-85 and saw everyone playing in Boston for most of that - the Neighborhoods were the real thing during the rebellion that started in late 70s.
I went into my favorite record store here in central WI in the early/mid 80's and a cute girl was playing Doctors Mob and the Neighborhoods on the phono player as I was going through the stacks of records. I bought High Hard One & Headache Machine that night thinkin' I had the inside track to a hot date. I took the albums home to give them a proper listen and never called the girl back. If I saw her today I would give her a kiss for introducing me to great rock n' roll. Still got the albums and still dust them off for a play now and then. Nice post
Oh man! I most certainly was there..went to sooo many Hoods shows at the Rat then.. and Fire is my favourite Hoods song! Thank you sooo much for posting this!
The first time I saw this group was at the Channel in Boston. My first thoughts, they're fucking incredible and are going to be HUGE! Well, I had the first part right!
I think it was produced by John McDermott out of Watertown Continental Cablevision. I worked there and pretty sure we shot this for John's local music program Sound and Vision. We took the production van to the Rat for many a sweaty shoot in the early > mid 80s
The Living Room moved into a former restaurant about a 1/2 mile from the legendary “The Big Bubble” on Promenade St. I think it is still open. Randy Hein’s (founder, owner) unfortunate death site is about a 1/2 mile from my current residence in Lincoln.
The Hoods changed their sound more than a few times. They started off as a poppy punk band a la Generation X, Buzzcocks, 999 (my favorite era of theirs), morphed into an angular Gang of Four/Wire influenced sound, and then settled into a Cheap Trick meets Aerosmith arena rock vibe.
Thx for this:) I so appreciate... know ALL about this BIZ! Lived in R&R ghetto of Allston, back in day. What do ya need to know? MY BF at time played the Rat; and we were REGS - Thank you for the A-List:) Remember the hard core door guy with the voice box - always got in - no waiting -he loved us.? Anywho - I'm NOT a bragger, just an old school chick. What I appreciate is your mention of the Prime Movers....so many others if ya wanna chat. x. PS. To prove I'm from Boston from that time: Kiss of Death to get signed - I could name drop to break your toes. Hit me back, YES? The Neighborhoods were pals; as were the Rods and Cones, as were blaa, blaa blaa. Boston was tight. x.
Lesa Kramer Mitch the doorman with the voice box.Gimme the Flies but so many others.Dot Rat here.Chet's Last Call,Bunratty's,Cantones,Scruffy the Cat,Blackjacks.80s Boston rock scene, the BEST.
LB, You Sir have made my week! Thank you so much for posting this awesome footage of the Hoods and Outlets in their prime. The video quality is damn good considering the age. Mousse sales went up 2000% once we all saw Sir David's hair. Now, where did I leave my parachute pants and skinny tie?
These guys are great! Not too familiar with them, they got under my radar. so many good bands from there...La Peste... Real Kids. The energy of this show is outstanding. They really captured it on camera. Talented players too!
I always liked Minehan best with a Strat, later on when he moved to a Les Paul the band was still good but different, the songs changed. The Strat with the Marshall cut like a knife and the energy was just over the top.
Mitch! Thx in every way:)...and Bunratty's? Please! When all bands got a sound check???! x. Been There, Done That (from my ol' BF's song from back in day) Not a Secret: Secret Word. A boutique local, WE but sure had fun in the 80's in Boston: A Line? Umm ,certainly NEVER something I'd have to stand in - ton's of pals:) AND the line Biz...that was SAD. SIGH.
As the Hoods star rose they got to tour the Midwest. They were in Ohio and after the set a bunch of locals came up and asked them how they had heard of their local band's hit Prettiest Girl.......
LOL It was called the Rat (Rathskeller) BUT if a reg like me ya sure as shit saw RATS running along the pipes above; Ya sure as shit saw the Bouncers beating the shit and tossing fratboys out of back door, YIKES...I didn't see THAT Mr. Policeman.. Keep you biz straight. NOT a place for college kids. Damn! I loved going to the Rat, and walking past the line. Local rockers. I'm from a small surf town in NorCal and the Rat was same/same. Locals only; back in the day. Sorry. Not apologizing for behavior. It as rough and tumble back in the day. It was a cool school. From Ska to Punk, to newbie Boston - and we ALL remember how grand, if lucky to live in Boston in '80's. If tracking: '86 how Gang Green won on a COVER in the Rumble? WHAA? Boston, back in the Day - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_'n'_Roll_Rumble
I am in the process of recreating a mid-80s mixtape. I knew USA and Uniforms and Insignias (and had the "high hard one" album years ago) but the third Neighborhoods track on the tape is not known to me and is unlisted on the cover. It is, however, the lead song from this live show (and thanks very much for posting it!). Does anyone know what the song is? Thanks. And by the way the mention of Bunratty's below sent my mind reeling...
Hi, I am a Boston-based video producer working in collaboration with Dana-Farber Institute, the Red Sox organization, and local officials on a non-profit initiative called 617 Rocks, the aim of which is to start a music festival in the Fenway-Kenmore area of Boston to raise money for cancer and mental health support/research. We are creating a video to promote the non-profit festival that sets the scene of Boston's storied rock history of the 70s-90s, and I would like to use a very small portion of this clip in that video. Please contact me somehow! Don't want to post my email or number here, but if you respond I can share my social media details so we can connect there and move to phone/email.

Not much can compare to the Hoods live. Their recordings couldn’t possibly capture this energy. Thanks for posting this! Like going back in time.
Was one of the best shows! Hoods and The Outlets were hand in hand back in the day! Thanks for the memories guys !
This is breathtaking. I saw the 'hoods about a dozen times back in the day, it never got tired. Some of THE BEST gigs in Boston! Long live The HOODS!

This is awesome! I worked upstairs at the Rat about that time.. I LOVE The Neighborhoods!
This is Rock and Roll History!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
David was one of the most down to earth people ever. I adored him.
I worked at The Rat 76-79,knew Dave well, great guy onstage and off,Eddie.
Makes me think of WBCN. I miss that station
One of best bands I ever saw in the clubs, they came here to Albany NY many times. A rocking party everytime, should have been bigger.
0:25 Fire is Coming
3:25 Think It Over
5:45 Uniforms & Insignia
9:35 It All Makes Sense
12:41 Faith
17:10 Heatwave (cuts off)
I think it was produced by John McDermott out of Watertown Continental Cablevision. I worked there and pretty sure we shot this for John's local music program Sound and Vision. We took the production van to the Rat for many a sweaty shoot in the early > mid 80s
I used to check them out at Providence’s legendary LIVING ROOM
I used to live in Warren RI. Living room is a cool place. Still there as far as I know???
The Living Room moved into a former restaurant about a 1/2 mile from the legendary “The Big Bubble” on

club baby head ! 😉
We had them play on the quad at Northeastern university round the same time. Killer show. Don't know if we ever filmed them.
The quad was awesome. I was a freshman in 85 and The Dogmatics played at the quad. Halloren drove in on a motorcycle
I was there! Great show. It was the first time I saw them.
