Great list! I really want to read The Spear Cuts Through Water and Babel. I didn't fall in love with This is how you lose the time war, I just found that the two charecters had basically the same voice, but I am not well versed in romance books, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.
I think that's a fair point about the character voice in Time War, which is really interesting when you consider that each of the authors wrote a different character! I hope you read the Spear Cuts Through Water and Babel - they aren't perfect, but I loved them!
Great to see your list and hear the reasons behind each pick. I haven't seen the NYT list but I imagine it has a lot of 'worthy and important' books rather than those which people just enjoy or get something out of. I'm really interested to read Evicted, The Only Plane in the Sky and North Woods. Rebecca Kuang has been hit or miss, for me, so I'm wary of Babel. I really like the sound of The Spear Cuts Through Water, though it feels like a mood dependent read. Station Eleven is on my radar because I loved Sea of Tranquility, even though The Glass Hotel wasn't as engaging. I didn't love This is How You Lose the Time War. I thought the science-y bits of how the messages were left were very clever, but I never bought into the romance. I'll have a think about my list and come back tomorrow.
Love this video idea! After looking at the New York Times list I was definitely wishing there was more fantasy and just any other genre besides litfic and nonfiction, haha. I actually haven’t read any from your list so I guess I need to change that!! All of these sound good but I especially want to read Station Eleven, Babel, This Is How You Lose the Time War, The Spear Cuts Through Water, and The Thirteenth Tale!
I think those are great picks - I definitely think you would love Station Eleven especially! Agreed about the list - why was there so little genre fiction?
@@JessicasLibraryCarddefinitely need to get to station eleven soon! And yeah I would have loved to see more variety and less pretentious literature, if I’m being 100% honest 😂
I feel bad that I've only read one of these books (Babel). I agree that it's not a perfect book. I didn't particularly enjoy it. But I do appreciate its merits and importance. Dooooo I waaant to read American Gods? I'm not sure. It keeps coming up in my recs but I'm not fully convinced.
What books would make your top ten?

What an awesome list Jessica! Emily St. John Mandel has been on my radar. I’ve heard good things. American Gods is an excellent choice as well.
I hope you get to Station Eleven - she's fantastic! Out of her three books, Station Eleven and Sea of Tranquility are my favorites.
@@JessicasLibraryCard oh ok cool! Sea of Tranquility is the one I’ve had on my radar the longest.

I think that the Glass Hotel is the weakest novel of the three by a lot. I'm glad you found some recommendations from my list!
Wow I have actually not read any of these! Added Evicted to my list. It sounds like a very good and important read.
I'm glad I could introduce it to you! I think it's a really important read.

@@LibrariesandLattes exactly! I saw that yesterday they posted the results of their reader poll, and that one looked much better to me

American Gods is pretty light-hearted in comparison to something like Babel. I loved all the mythology, but it is a little long.
