    I traveled on the Pines many times from Manchester London Road to Bournemouth in the 1950's and early sixties. Always remember the passengers shuffling around when we were in platform one at Green Park. Those that had to face the engine, I always had a black face and cinders in my eyes when arriving at Bournemouth, as I spent most of my journey leaning out of the carriage windows taking in that great scenery. Happy days never forgotten, this film brings it all back, thanks.

    Being in my 70's now I can remember travelling often on the S+D from Wincanton to Bath Green Park, your series of videos brings back vivid memory's of those times , and it's railway modelling at it's best, with first class editing and camera angles + sound to add to the realism, It must take you some time when recording these videos to get all the trains in the right place each time to take the shot ? are there any old timer's reading this that remember or know of a time in the late 1940 when a train overshot on platform 1 and demolished the buffers and some of the adjoining platform ?, I am sure I was about 3 years old when taken to see this ,,,, keep the videos coming they are great Ray

    One runs out of superlatives looking at this layout; which reminds me of Norman Eagles' (Sherwood Section) comment that 0 gauge is the smallest scale in which you can reproduce the massiveness of the prototype; in the same class as W S Norris's legendary layout and that was never finished. Thank you for sharing your wonderful work with us; the only thing that is missing is the 'Boat Road' which ran to a wharf beneath the running lines (Bristol TM had one as well).

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks praise indeed. The Sherwood Section and in particular the Norris railway which was so far ahead of its time for scale appearence were very influential models in my youth. The 'Boat Road' was considered but just not enough room to incorporate apart from the stub where it crosses the S&D shed 5 road. One of those compromises of which there are plenty but the flavour of the railway is as close a model to the prototype that I could achieve in the space available

    An enjoyable 20 mins - I have walked the line (now a cycle track) between Bath Green Park and Midford including Devonshire tunnel (which is lit). As you walk through, classical music plays - said to put off the young locals from hanging around inside. The gradient is certainly stiff - you really notice it even when walking.

    Fantastic stuff!!! Dare I be blasphemous and ask where / if the (former GWR) fits into this, being Bath? I'm looking for some mystical place (I'm not sure it ever existed!) where the GWR, the SR, and the LMS all met so I've got some realistic way of explaining how a GWR Castle, a Black 5, and a Merchant Navy or West Country Pacific can all be in the same place at the same time!

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi
      Thanks. Green Park did see WR locos but only 1 instance of a Castle visiting. Green Park saw LMS, SR, WR and even the odd NER loco so a very wide range of possibilities. Bath was probably only matched by Oxford for diversity of the regions locos

    Wonderful as always, thank you. I have a question regarding the shot of the passenger train with the milk tanks attached, is that a mixed train or not? Anyway I could see the milk tanks being on the rear of the train when it arrrived at Bath, but then it reverse out to Bristol with the milk tanks on the head of the train next to the loco. I know you've done alot of research on these trains recently, but I'm curious as to the tanks being infront of the passenger carriages, was that a normal formation to see in those days? Anyway, another enjoyable half hour spent watching trains. Regards Dave.

    • @stretchedits
      @stretchedits 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Altum Quinque Hi, thanks for that answer to my question, that's really interesting and something I never knew.

    • @bathgreenpark2485
      @bathgreenpark2485  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What started this all off was spotting a picture of a BR 4MT 76XXX steaming up through Lyncombe Vale on a 3 coach set with two 6 wheel milk tankers on the front. My take on this is that with them at the front of the train then on arrival at Bailey Gate all the loco had to do was detach from the carriages, steam forward clear of the turnout into the creamery and reverse the milk tankers into the creamery. reverse back onto its train and head off to Bournemouth.
      For the Northbound working I think that the train came to a stand at Bailey Gate. The loco detached and moved forward clear of the north crossover, reversing back down clear of the creamery sidings and moving forward into the creamery to collect the tankers and the run out back onto the down main. Moving forward over the south crossover and attach the wagons to the rear of the train. Then reverse out move forward again on the down line regain the up line before reversing onto the carriages and then off northward.
      As far as I can ascertain, tankers - when run to or from Carmarthen were brought into Bath on the 8.50 pm from Templecombe, and sent on next morning to Bristol on the 6.20am to Temple Meads.

    • @stretchedits
      @stretchedits 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bathgreenpark2485 Thanks for that explanation, Yes I see why they would want the milk tanks next to the loco to ease shunting at the creamery. I find that whole unusual formation thing of the old railways fascinating, and something we'd never see today. Thanks Dave.
