I legit thought those actors were teenagers when I watched the show. I saw Maya Erskine in a movie and was so confused when she was like, an adult. Their body language on the show is so good. Even when they are confident, they embody teenage awkwardness. Also the costume department did fantastic. There are some horrible late 90s looks on the show.

I think it makes sense they're older than they seem to be because they show smoking and drinking so it would look bad if done underaged.

@@Honeytruffless That's not really an issue because the characters are doing it, so it's already showing kids doing it. Besides the actual child actors have to do it. You do realize it's TV. Nobody, not even adults, is actually drinking and smoking (they make fake cigarettes). They also use body doubles for kids. The drawback is it's hard to do kissing scenes because the adult actors obviously can't make out with children. I have to admit I never fully bought their old faces as kids, but it helped to make it even more awkward which is better because I can relate more to adults in awkward situations than actual kids.
They seriously deserve emmys for their performances in this show

The body language is accurate. The teenagers that ride the bus in the afternoon act like they will explode if they are more than 5 inches from their friends.
There is one kid that just stands in the aisle next to her friends, even if there are empty seats and it drives me nuts. You couldn't pay me to be that age again. Everything was so mortifying.

I can't believe how "On the nose" this show was. I was in fifth grade during the 2000-2001 school year, so I connected with this so hard. Even the "popular girls" looked like actual girls from that era.
Lol "on the nose" in Australia is a euphemism - or slang, i guess - for a pungent odour. Or in this setting relating to art it would mean displeasing, a bit 'off'. So i was initially confused reading your comment thinking it denoted strong negative connotations, but the following sentences seemed so positive. Haha. Urban Dictionary tells me in other parts of the world it means 'on point'/exact?

The popular girls in this show are hilarious in how they dress and such, I didn’t go to school in the 2000s and it’s funny to think of how the popular girls looked and dressed that way 😳 how different it was compared to my 2010s experience
I have never simultaneously cringed and related so hard to a show. The "you're a wriggly boy" scene had me crying from both laughter and vicarious embarrassment 😳😅and I was borderline upset at the level of accuracy and the window into my own middle school psyche that had been opened lol. These ladies are amazing at putting themselves into a mindset that so many of us have stuffed into our shame closets decades ago. BRAVO!! 👏
I kept scrolling by this show and finally on one boring rainy day I gave in, BEST DECISION EVER! I’m so addicted to this show. I stopped at Episode 10 not wanting it to end. This show is well put together. I love it and HIGHLY recommend it.

I watched season one with no clue what it was. I cannot get enough! The aol phone interruptions, the baggy tasseled capris and tasseled hair, the N sync, midriff baring and yet covering with complete awkwardness... it is too much and I love it soooo much! The laughs met with cries when relating on every level takes it over the top.
1: freaking outstanding acting
2: if they HAD been 13 when they shot this, they'd fit right into society as 18 year in this interview

This show did an OUTSTANDING job at portraying the awkwardness that is tweenhood
I spent a good deal of time yelling at these girls to stop what they were doing on the show. Don't put on those panties. Don't do the drum solo. Don't go ask him to dance. Don't suck that canned air. It's like a horror movie. Don't go into the shed with all the sharp objects. Like Data drinking the horrible drink in The Next Generation and wanting more, I want more, please.

I didn't realize that they were adults until I looked them up. Now I can't unsee them as adults most of the time but their kid appearance always comes back.

Conan is such a great host. Watched the Jimmy Kimmel interview & it’s like he doesn’t even want to have them on or something. Asking questions he wasn’t even interested in, much less caring about what they had to say in response. Conan made them comfortable & drew them out to say more & show more.

Such a cool thing when two females can bring their unique talent and story together with such creativity and pizazz **glitter*glitter** to create such a fondness of a time that was horrid and full of awkward torture on a daily basis, yet, with good friends. 😊
Loved the way they play with the dolls, how Shuji sticks up for his sister when she needs it, the thong episode was HILARIOUS and the last episode on the play. It was so heart-wrenching I could’ve 😭

I am viewing this in Sept 2021 and have been watching PEN15 on Hulu just recently. I am also confused now. I REALLY thought they were both real teens. I DON'T know whether to be disappointed or happy. A little of both, but mostly I'm confused. These 2 are EXCELLENT actresses. She is 34 wow AMAZING. She did a scene rehearsing for the play. WOW.. that was AMAZING. season 2 episode 6 , I never saw anything so good. But I THOUGHT she was really like 13 or 14 and pretending to be a grown woman. Now I know she is a grown woman. but either way you need to see that........ it was truly amazing

A lot of people misunderstand what Rotten Tomatoes exactly is. Rotten Tomatoes does NOT review movies. They are simply an aggregate for movie reviews of professional critics, meaning they take all the reviews from different magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc. and combine them all to make one "super" review. Also, the rating you see on RT does not say how good critics thought the movie was. The number represents how many critics enjoyed the movie or gave it a positive rating. For example, a movie with a 97% does not mean critics thought it was a 9.7/10. It means 97% of critics gave it a positive review. This also means if 400 critics review a movie and all gave it a 6/10, the movie would have a 100% on RT even though it is really not that good. This can also get tricky because many critics use different rating systems (like the 5 stars system) so it is up to Rotten Tomatoes to translate that into a 10 point scale, which may affect the accuracy of the overall scores.

Was Rotten Tomatoes even referenced in this clip? I didn't catch it if it was. Anyway, while I thought it was obvious how RT works-- I've always understood it and assumed others did as well-- this is a very good explanation.
I would add that the rating system is even more subjective, though. Not every critic uses a system of numbers or stars to rate a movie, so it's often up to the discretion of RT to determine whether a review is overall positive or negative. I'm sure this gets tricky when a review is generally tepid instead of overwhelmingly enthusiastic or excoriatingly negative.

The show is really funny.
It's a great show, but they don't look like middle schoolers at all. Their like 1 or 2 heads taller than most of the children with huge bags under their eyes. Hilarious show though.

They look grown on the show to me too but they do act like 13 years olds during that time period. The show is pretty funny and awkward. Ugis is such a mean term. I felt bad for Maya.
