I'll never forget all I wanted to do when I was a kid was to be a pilot after watching Top Gun. So instead I join the Marine Corps and became a Ground Pounder. Now after watching Top Gun again all I want to do is be a pilot again at 46 lol

I’m always a fan of these old school training discussions on the podcast. It’s helpful to get away from what’s trendy at the moment and move back to the basics of what works.

The whole fitness community needed to hear this ! Whether you are an athlete, coach, or “average joe” in the gym, it’s imperative you understand the difference between “adaption”and “healing”.
I’m a retired D1 collegiate athlete, who is actively pursuing a career as a fitness trainer and performance coach - so reaching peak “intensity” and/or “chasing the pump” has always been my priority in the gym, but at what costs, ya know?
This video just affirms how crucial it is to understand the difference between “effective” programming and “intensive” programming.
This conversation solidifies that “progress” doesn’t have to be “painful”, just pursue “purpose” in each rep!

Symmetry is about balance. It's important to have that in the way you move and look but also in how you live. Fitness has helped me find that balance, helping to balance work, family, hobbies and taking care of myself. By balancing all those out, my mental health feels symmetrical.
Keep up the great content fellas.

Changing my mindset about my workouts has been one of the biggest improvements since listening to mind pump! From making sure I'm sore to know I "actually did something" to feeling better and energized leaving the gym is huge. Thank you for all you do for both fitness professionals and the average person trying to better their life!

Hi!🌺 I just recently found your channel, blog, Instagram and homepage and I'm so impressed. This is what I have been looking for! Evidence based training and advice that really gives the results that you want. I can't even start to tell you how much I've been led astray from all kinds of conflicting advice that leads you nowhere.🤪 I have been living on disability for about 22 years bcs I have so much pain from fibromyalgia but interestingly enough gym training is the best kind of training for me. Doctors I have met sadly tell fibromyalgia patients that gym training should be avoided. That makes me sad and angry when I know how important it is for your general health! I'm very interested in your gym programs and I look forward to exploring all of your content more! I have already subscribed and turned the notifications on and ofc liked and I have checked you out everywhere bcs your content is awesome!🌞 Best regards from Sweden!🌺🇸🇪🌞

1:16:35 i’ve recently been splitting up my workouts into two, sometimes three times a day. I’m currently training for a powerlifting competition, and I’m also a personal trainer. Because of my schedule training clients, I very often don’t have 2 to 3 hour span‘s to get the full workout in. What I’ve been doing is doing my competition lifts in the morning, or first, and then later in the afternoon or evening doing my accessory lifts. Sometimes, because I often have two competition lifts in a row, I will split this up into three times, with each competition lift having its own session, and then my accessory lifts. As long as I fuel myself properly that day, and sleep is decent, I feel really good doing this and since I only train three sessions a week, I get more frequent exposure to the lifts, because sometimes, I will do one competition lift at night, and come back and do the other one in the morning. Just in general, you feel like you never really stop practicing when you’re doing it more than one time a day, even if it’s not the same lift. The idea of exercising your strength more than once a day is an interesting concept and I’ve definitely seen benefits myself

Finally understanding objective metrics like mobility and strength and implementing those in my training have given me and my clients incredible results. Thanks for the all the great information you guys put out, keep it up!

I think we need to distinguish between muscle soreness and joint / tendon soreness.
My best gains have always happened when I get muscle soreness after the workout a couple days later.
It’s also an indicator to me that I’m getting in quality hard work.
As long as I give myself enough days of rest / recovery before the next workout, I’m good to go 💪

On the topic of soreness: it wasn’t till proper programming from you guys that i was putting pounds on the bar on my squats versus when i was doing legs day to the point that i couldn’t even sit on the toilet seat the next day and wondering why I wasn’t getting stronger (we’ve all been there, don’t lie). This is exactly what happened to me. In the beginning I tried to do everything right. I don’t believe I trained too much, I was doing full body 3 days a week. But I progressed so much with minimal soreness. Then my motivation and energy took a dive and even though I was still going to the gym my effectiveness was down. I lost my performance while retaining my physique. But now I struggle with the mental game of “I used to incline press 85lb dumbbells now I can only do 70’s). It’s tough, same thing with squats. I was doing sets of 315 but now doing sets of 225 has me sore as he** the next few days.

I used to be soo jazzed when I got sore after a workout and think it was the best. I would chase after it. Now if I get sore - I get super bummed. I know that means I’ll likely not want do so my workout the next day(s) after. So instead of maybe getting three workouts in during the week I might now only get one in.
Also top gun- I don’t think my husband has ever been excited for anything as much as he was for seeing this new movie lol we listened to the soundtrack on the way to see the movie 🤓 I’d bet the influence of the first movie was over 500% increase in recruitment - I was only 3 when it came out and the influence on my generation was still super high when I was in ROTC and my husband joined the marines in the early 2000s.

Hello , love you guys on this show! Different type of motivation and love the dedication you guys give to y’all’s audience?
So I’ve never had a trainer, more so tagged along with some bodybody builders when I was on deployment, they taught me some basics.. 8-12 rep range, move up on weight once you get past 12 type ? But this was back in 2016, I saw some what of a change in my body, I was about 25% body fat & got to like a 19% so long story short, had a kid, depression, & went through hell for about 4 years, gained weight & then last year I lost of bunch of weight but I was skinny fat I was taking those weight loss pills, but since I started listening to you guys I paid attention how it only makes your metabolism weaker so I’ve been trying to reverse diet & I feel like I’m gaining a bunch of weight, but my question is I can’t see my muscle definition at all I Know I’m strong but I have so much fat, & I am in a slight calorie deficit? So are my workouts the ones that I need to change? Still doing the 8-12 rep range, I go to the gym about 4-6 days a week, & I recently stopped doing cardio because I wasn’t seeing any results & I would feel exhausted more than 12 hours after cardio?
& I feel like super heavy, I am eating more protein, trying to stay away from processed foods the most I can
I just wanna see a change in my body, I’m getting a litte frustrated

So I'd considered myself as a beginner lifter... 2 years of ok consistency...
I usually do 4 day splits
    Chest arms day
    8 sets of bench @ 180 lbs x 10 reps
8 sets of alt dB curls @25 lbs x 12 reps
    8 sets of decline bench @ 180lbs x 10 reps
    8 sets of sitting incline dB curl @ 12lbs x 10 reps
Doing this 1xs a week as a part of my 4 day split does make me sore....is this over training?

Man I have been training for over a year now and seeing very poor growth. I currently weigh around 64-65 kg and all I wish is to be bigger, stronger and more healthy. I bench 40kg and last year I was doing 30kg, I squat about 30kg now also practically no change from last year. I also have issues with digestion which affects my eczema and eating right is difficult for me (nothing I eat digests). I’m also a vegetarian/ vegan as I have recently cut out dairy. I need help.
Also I had no idea soreness was an indication of overtraining I always thought the more the merrier.

I think a point to hit home which obviously you guys dont need advice but for the first quah people need to realize your muscles do not know how much you're actually lifting and that full range of motion can make it seem like your lifting more weight

i very rarely get sore anymore unless i start doing a new variation of something. Mostly all i feel after workouts is that nice full and heavy feeling in my muscles from the blood in there

I've read that Acetyl L-Carnitine is better for cognitive function but not so much for muscle. Is that incorrect?
