  • Former U.S. Marine and Baltimore police officer Michael A. Wood, Jr. made headlines when he Tweeted about the abuses he witnessed fellow Baltimore police officers perpetrating. In this interview with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur Wood reveals the truth behind the “us vs. them” siege mentality pervading urban police forces that leads to a culture of corruption, racism and abuse, and what can be done to bring change for the better to policing in the United States.

      el scientifico The problem is the fact that those traits make him 'not' a cop... Once you put fur on a fish it's a mammal. The system needs to destroyed and rebuild from the ground up. Like he said it wasn't that they were racist. It was literally their job TO be racist. So it's not that we need more people like him as police. We need to change police as whole, so people like him aren't needed but instead the norm.

    • @peteryang8991
      @peteryang8991 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This ex cop, should become a politician to work on police reform, he got some very good idea.
      What he is speaking here, isn't surprising at all. Because similar thing happened to China during the 18th century, which lead to why Europe surpass Asia in 19th century (In fact then British ambassador to China predicted it.)
      Prior to mid 17th century, China used a highly decentralized government structure, including Imperial government (headed by Emperor) State (headed by a magistrate) City and County (headed by a magistrate) the city is divided into region and the county is divided into town. Each city and county was again divided into Suburb or village, with an elected magistrate (democratically elected) State, City, County, Region and Town magistrate might be appointed by the Emperor, but that is the limitation of his authority, over regional affairs, the Emperor would have a representative there, to supervise the magistrate and to advice the Emperor on local affairs. Apart from that each level of government was very independent, much like modern US each level of government enjoy great independence. Within the Imperial government it got 4 branches, legislative, administrative, military and oversight. The Emperor is assisted by the Secretary of State and the State department to operate the administrative branch (in fact it is almost identical to modern US state department, leading many experts to suspect whether the US founding father copy the Chinese) military got a body similar to US Joint Chief of staff and oversight a 3rd branch operate with the assistant of the Deputy Secretary of State and Under Secretary of State.
      By 18th century the succeed Qing dynasty adopt an us vs them mentality with the people, and all in a sudden, the government become very centralized, in its operation structure. local government power was radical diminish while in the Imperial government it was the office of the Emperor running everything, it become big corporate environment and as time went by corruption issue get worse at worse. It is similar to what we see happening in many big city police force of the US. The corruption eventually lead to the collapse of China by 19th century.
      The 18th century British ambassador to China predicted this, during the early 18th century, China conducted economic sanction upon British, to support the Americans and in the same time provided economic aid to the US. American originally backed by the French during the revolution war, due to France is now in civil war, need a new backer, against British navel blockade against them, in post revolution war era. And the Chinese decided to help, it led to the first major navel conflict between the British and the Chinese, which the Chinese won with ease. But the then British ambassador, told the British to relax saying the Qing dynasty is like a big ship with only one sailor, for now it is sailing, well, but if the sailor got dizzy for just one second, the ship would start sinking, and nothing the sailor can later do, can resolve this problem, which was exactly what happened later, the American did back the Chinese a lot during the 19th century, due to the Chinese back them during the 18th century, but it simply wasn't enough, especially by late 19th century where Cixi actually declare war on the US, changing the America's foreign policy with China.
      Right now, I think what happened in then China, is similar to what is happening in big city US police forces.

    100% of all cops should pass an empathy class before they can become cops in the first place. No cop should think of themself as "us" and everyone else is "them". They all should think of everyone as "we all bleed red".

    • @tjfiso6407
      @tjfiso6407 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Okay. But I think a large part of the issue is that they enter an environment that fosters an "us and them" attitude. I imagine that most Officers don't enter the force with that kind of mentality. The proposed empathy test may help to ensure a recruit is suitable but that doesn't mean much if they enter the force and then that attitude develops.

    • @Amiral_SWGInfinity
      @Amiral_SWGInfinity 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That mentaility is beaten into everyone. Us and them caused every war ever fought, the holocaust, KKK, racism, religiousism, terrorism, and the current sad state of our police departments everywhere and it's passed down from our leaders and parents because that's what they were taught. Officers don't get credit for helping their community and protecting people, they get credit for arresting "them".
      The only way forward is to move from fear based decisions to decisions based on fact and strength. Fear is weakness and 99% of the time it's unwarranted. It almost always leads to hatred. If you are afraid, other people around you are. It's up to every one of us to unlearn us and them. Break the cycle. Make friends outside your comfort zone so you can expand it. Be honest, forthright and genuine with everyone. You can't change other people, but you can change yourself. By doing so, and moving more and more people from the them column to the us column for yourself, you can make a difference. You will make people question their own internal barriers and fears. It won't always work, but it won't make things worse either.
      I used to have all kinds of thems. The more fear I got rid of, the richer my life became. Now, I give every single person I meet an honest and genuine chance, from homeless people and addicts to wealthy people I used to envy. Most of the time I get some value out of every person I meet. I don't trust anyone I don't know, but I also don't block myself from getting to know people to build trust.
      Letting other people know that you think they matter can have a transformative effect on them. Making a new friend gives both of you an increased sense of worth. It's also a fresh start for both of you. Here's a new person you haven't been negative to. Don't screw it up. Be positive. Call me crazy but that's how I roll. I had to unlearn a lot of stuff to get here, but it was worth it. I don't live in fear anymore.

A standing police force was never something that was meant to be in this country when our forefathers wrote the Constitution. Before our country was stolen from us in 1871 two men could go to the middle of the street let the sheriff know that they're going to have a shootout because they have a disagreement or whatever the case may be. There was freedom not enforced servitude. I would rather live in dangerous freedom than peaceful slavery Thomas Jefferson 1787. You've been so indoctrinated your entire life that you don't even know you're a Slave. You probably think the Federal Reserve is a branch of the federal government when in all actuality the fact is the Federal Reserve is a private Corporation owned by Bankers that don't even live in this country.

    I went to the Police Academy and was a police officer for a short time. Brainwashing is dominant in the Police culture. Its an "us against them" culture. Everything is either black or white. Independent thinkers and those who question authority (no matter how corrupted) is not allowed in the Police Culture. I was also amazed that in the police culture how every little thing is deemed a potentially dangerous threat that can easily justify a shooting. The job desensitizes the police officer who dont really see others (outside of his fellow officers) as human.

    38:11 I got locked up the same way when I was 18. My first encounter with the police.I smoked a little weed before I was suppose to leave for college and ended up getting illegally pulled over with no probable cause, the officer said I went two lanes over? Even though I had on my signal, and made a proper turn. He ordered me out of the car and questioned me about gangs, and drugs. My car was searched and less than a gram of marijuana was found. I was charged with possession, and taken to jail, put on probation and ended up losing my job, and my financial aid. Because I lost my job I wasn't able to pay fines on probation. And there was a warrant for my arrest. My probation ended up getting revoked and I did 9 months in the county jail at the age of 18. Which severely damaged my interpretation of life throughout my early 20s.
    While spending time in jail it was amazing the amount of young black men(18-22) in jail with similar offenses. Roughly 6 out of 10 prisoners were young black men that were in jail for marijuana. This situation ruined my relationship with my parents, and stalled my college plans.
    Funny thing is I came across one of my white friends from high school in jail and he received 2 days in jail for a DUI. The system of targeting young black men is real, and widespread!

      @louis5555gmail 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soulgypsy5151 , I am 100% in touch with reality. I don't live in fantasy land. The job of a police officer is extremely difficult and extremely dangerous. I understand that cops have to stick together in order to survive. I also understand that they are allowed to use force against uncooperating suspects and they cannot measure with mathematical accuracy the amount of force necessary. Sometimes it appears as if they have used excessive force, however I don't have the expertise to assess whether they did or did not. It leave that determination to trained experienced former officers who are supervising those officers and know exactly how the cop felt in that particular situation because he/she has been there and done that.
      I also understand that they are human beings and they make mistakes. We don't punish people for making mistakes. However the law allows a citizen who is injured as a result of a worker's mistake to seek compensation from their employer. Hundreds of people sue police departments all over the country every year and receive compensation.
      Now, it gets better. Do you know the all time champions of making deadly mistakes are hospital workers? About 300,000 people die in our hospitals as a result of an employee's mistake, negligence, incompetence or even malice. Everyone of us will end up in a hospital at some point in our life.
      That means you are far more likely to be killed by a hospital worker than by a police officer especially if you are a law-abiding citizen and civilized.

That was one year ago. But, if you are suggesting that Michael is all talk, you don't know this Marine. He has nothing to prove to anyone. He has served and will continue to serve his country until his last breath. If only you had 1/100 of Michael's courage and love of country, you wouldn't be wasting time posting sour attitude comments on the internet. why do we spend so much time talking about the Institutional Racism of Cops?
    Let's talk about the National Issue of Racism.
    Black people for generations: "These cops are killing us needlessly!"
    Other Americans: "Yeah, ok. Sure, guy. Whatever happened to you and your family, you probably brought it on yourselves."
    After the invention of the camera phone, Black people: "Look! Look! You see? This offense didn't warrant an execution! And this here wasn't even an offense!"
    Other Americans: "Hey, I don't know what led to this. Even if you did just mouth off/steal something/sold loose cigarettes, I don't think a cop will waste time on you if he didn't think it was worth it. You did something, so you got what's coming to you. Even if it's as light as mouth off/steal something/sold loose cigarettes."
    One white cop: "Umm... guys? No, the black people were telling the truth for decades."
    Other Americans: "I HAD NO IDEA SUCH HORRORS WERE GOING ON!!!"
    Cops were allowed to do this because I believe the 'Other Americans' openly (in secret) supported their actions. They were and are still afraid of the black community.
    The ancestors of Other Americans and still some of them to this day robbed Black Americans of simple chance. Relegating them to the poorest of neighborhoods, giving them substandard food, governmental services including schooling, and a police force to remind them that they aren't supposed to go beyond their limits.
    Who WOULDN'T be afraid of their own creation that was supposed to die or become humbled due to their circumstances, but ended up just becoming enraged and ready to throw down without anything to lose?

      RevolutionCPT I agree that there is a lot of fear of the Black community and I think a lot of it is out of ignorance. The White community has been so disconnected from the reality of the Black community for so long that it's just easier to say that Black people are simply not trying hard enough to get out of their situation.
      Black people don't live in a vacuum separate from society so their problems are part of societies problems. The issue for White people is that if they start to truly look at the oppressive nature of the system against Black people then that means they have to start looking at who is actually doing the oppression.
      Many Whites hate to discuss slavery in America because it is a stark reminder of when/how the exploitation and oppression started. It is also a reminder of how the country built the majority of it's great wealth. I think discussing slavery is important because this is where it all began and everything from Jim Crow laws to segregation and institutionalized racism starts from slavery.
      I believe that if White people and Black people were able to push past their discomfort and have open, honest dialogue about what happened with race relations then we could progress. I think that those who say slavery is in the past and just 'get over it' are not truly aware of the reality of the situation. We live in a current world that is constructed from the past so everything that happened in the past still bleeds into the present. The entire society of races is based on what others have done in the past so before we can hope to change the present towards the future we need to study and understand the past and how it affects us today.

    Did everyone totally ignore the "I've got to get my numbers" portion? We are all so concerned with racism and profiling people that you missed the terrible reality of how the police work. They HAVE to make arrests. They are forced to find things to make numbers to get promotions and seem like they are doing something. That is the worst part in my opinion. They shouldn't just make arrests or look to make arrests just for the sake of making them or advancing their career. I don't see how that helps the general public or reduction in actual crime when they are just making things up to make numbers. It shouldn't be like that. Arrests and investigations should only be made if an actual serious crime is involved and not for any other reason, personal or otherwise.

      I agree.It's like the department considers them lazy if they aren't arresting or giving tickets. At the end of the day, the police system in America is run like a business. If those people aren't generating revenue for the city, they aren't seen as valuable employees to the department and will quickly be replaced by the next power hungry dude in the academy.
      Essentially what you pointed out was, in the police departments mind, if there is no crime, that's a bad thing..............if that isn't the most ass backwards thing ever

    This country needs a serious police reform. Police in high crime neighborhoods need to stop filling the jails and prisons and start filling the schools and rec centers. You might say "but its not their job to change people's lives", well its their job to PROTECT and SERVE. What better way to protect than to fix the issue? Going around busting dealers on small time charges is like sweeping the dirt under the rug instead of actually cleaning the floor, sure it appears better but you didn't really fix the problem. You put a drug dealer in prison, he's still a drug dealer, putting him in prison didn't make him not a drug dealer, but if you take that dealer and you change his life by actively being involved in the community (given that he's willing to change his life), then that dealer is no longer a dealer and you've fixed the problem instead of just patching it up. The story he told with the dealer and his baby, instead of just locking that guy up the cop could have made contact with him, talked to him and seen if they could get him to turn his life around so his baby would have a better life, but instead he was ordered to throw him in jail and leave a baby fatherless and without financial support.

    This man is a hero. I don't care what you say, Internet. The logic of being a cop does not end at just doing your job. So many people have lost themselves by "just following orders." It's an excuse to not think just because following some false sense of justice is seemingly always right. It's not. Following orders just makes you a follower, and Michael A. Wood Jr. is a leader. He was a leader for recognizing the connections these "thugs" have with the rest of the world and how the system operates against them while the culture of policing treats them less than animals. He is right that we need money out of politics because this is pure exploitation. And regardless if the reality of living black has no immediate effect on you, it is indisputable that reformatting this corrupt system allows the majority to move forward in more ways than simply reducing crime on the streets, but the crime in wall street as well.

    • @LostChildOfTime
      @LostChildOfTime 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Kerr Youth's final luxury has come crashing in.
      As far as I'm concerned, your 5-year old nephew is perfect in your eyes. Yet you're going to have the audacity to compare the life experience of a short-lived human being within the prime of it's innocence to the human being well into his adulthood, who like most adults lose that innocence simply by being taught how to be an adult. Really?
      Your rationality is disgusting. Life isn't a static affair of being good or bad. This officer could've been just as innocent at 5. Your nephew might not always be as pure as he is at 5 compared to what he'll be at 35. People grow. People learn. People change. People make mistakes. You're litterally saying it's not okay to be an imperfect human and that the most human thing is to be born with good sense that is subject to be lost later in life. Perhaps you ought to look at yourself in the mirror instead of your nephew because no one is perfect and I'm sure you yourself aren't without mistakes.
      Keep in mind that this officer was NOT trained to feel empathy for others. He already knew that it didn't make sense and instead of being like the crooked cops who go against nature and do inhumane things, he went with nature and maintained his humanity.
      In the end, everyone's experiences is going to prepare them for being empathetic towards others. You can be a 5-year old child who's taught to hate people for being different. Or you can be some middle aged individual who thinks a middle aged individual who's gone down the wrong path can't turn back and return to innocence.
      And you sir, seem to lack that empathy you expect of others.

    Michael Wood... please do interviews anywhere and everywhere you can. The information you're confirming about what so many people know, but so many others are ignorant to, or actually like... doesn't seem to be coming from any other source anywhere. Knowing you have seen this from the inside gives credibility to the indefensible, and this country needs that more than anything else. Hell, you should run for office!

    This interview has had a major impact on me . I'm a white male that has been totally ignorant to this epidemic. I fell into the bull shit propaganda . How can I help ?

      ***** read the new jim crow, it'll help you realize the war on the drugs was really about the black community. It sounds preposterous, but the book makes a fair argument. Its only a 250 page book.

      I agree 100% on that statement. Well my head is out of the sand . Just saw on the news about this black lady who was found hung in her jail cell in Texas . She was an activist against police brutality . What a coincidence. Enough is enough

    23:34 I think cops should only be prior military. I did riot control raining in the national guard at a sheriff's training facade town. They had us use the gun draw reaction film simulator to see how you would handle a situation. one of the last scenarios was answering a call to a market being robbed. as you approached the door you hear a gunshot from inside the store. an unarmed man runs out and pass you in a flash. The next guy comes out with a hand gun in has hand. about 1-2 seconds he raises both of his hands in the air with gun and says "dont shoot, Im the store clerk and I was just robbed" So i didnt shoot the guy. the exercise operator asked me if another soldier warned me about this scenario. I said no and he asked why didnt i shoot the guy with the gun. I told him he didnt aim it at me. He told our commander that most of the Guardsmen didnt shoot him, but nearly all of the police/sheriffs shot him. Like this guy here said we did not have fear. This cops have way too much fear.

      Yeah, I don't know about the parents. It sounds more like when they were done raising him he was an asshole, then he raised himself out of that.
